Choosing a laptop bag: how to find the right bag for work, study and travel

A laptop bag needs to do more than look smart. In the Netherlands, a bag has to cope with rain, full bicycle panniers, crowded trains and being packed and unpacked every day. Yet many buyers mainly focus on colour and price. As a result, a bag may turn out to be too small, awkwardly designed or less protective than expected.

Common pitfalls when choosing a laptop bag

1. Screen size is not the same as external dimensions

A 15.6-inch laptop will not automatically fit every 15.6-inch laptop bag. Screen size only tells you the display’s diagonal measurement. The laptop itself may be larger because of wide bezels, a difference in thickness or an unusual shape.

Always check:

  • the maximum screen size;
  • the dimensions of the laptop compartment;
  • the thickness of the padded compartment;
  • whether there is room for a sleeve or protective case.

The same applies to a 14-inch laptop bag and a 17-inch laptop bag. A 17-inch model often needs more space than its name alone suggests.

2. “Waterproof” is often confused with water-resistant

A waterproof laptop bag sounds appealing, but check what is actually stated. “Water-resistant” usually means the fabric can repel light rain. That is not the same as providing prolonged protection against a heavy shower or immersion.

Look for a combination of:

  • a water-resistant outer fabric;
  • covered or sturdy zips;
  • a raised or coated base;
  • an inner compartment that does not sit directly against the outer wall.

If a product is described as water-resistant only, treat it accordingly. In bad weather, do not put a laptop loose in an open compartment.

3. Lots of compartments are not always practical

A laptop bag with compartments can help keep everything organised, but small compartments also take up space. A bag with lots of zips is not automatically suitable for a charger, mouse, documents and lunch box. Focus on the layout that suits the items you carry every day.

An overfilled bag also puts strain on zips, seams and shoulder straps. In practice, a simple design with one padded laptop compartment and several wide accessory pockets can be more useful than a complicated organiser.

The key specifications to check

Laptop size and protection

A padded laptop compartment helps reduce scratches and knocks, but the level of protection varies from one design to another. Thick walls, a sturdy base and a good fit are important things to check. Avoid leaving a lot of empty space around the laptop, as this allows the device to move around.

For laptops up to 15.6 inches, the Kensington SP25 and several HP models are designed for this size. If you have a larger device, the Kensington Sleeve SP17 is suitable for notebooks up to 17 inches according to the product description. Nevertheless, always check the actual laptop dimensions for each model.

Carrying style and weight

A laptop backpack distributes the weight across both shoulders and is often comfortable for cyclists and train commuters. A shoulder bag or laptop briefcase is better suited to those who carry their bag for shorter periods or regularly take documents out of it. A detachable shoulder strap offers greater flexibility, while a trolley strap is useful when travelling.

The unladen weight varies. According to the product information, the Beneunder LC168 weighs approximately 220 grams, while the Kensington SP25 weighs 710 grams. A lightweight bag may be appealing, but check that it still provides enough padding and support.

Materials, care and durability

Nylon and polyester are widely used materials for laptop bags. According to the specifications, the Kensington SP25 uses 1680-denier nylon. The HP models in this selection state that they contain recycled materials. This information says something about the composition, but not automatically about the bag’s overall lifespan or environmental impact.

For a durable laptop bag, several factors are relevant:

  • the abrasion resistance of the fabric and base;
  • the quality of the zips and seams;
  • whether the bag can be cleaned with a damp cloth;
  • the availability of a warranty and statutory consumer rights;
  • material and recycling information that is actually included in the product description.

For many of the products mentioned, the statutory guarantee in the EU is at least two years. This is legal protection in the event of a lack of conformity, not a promise that a bag will last indefinitely.

Frequently asked questions about laptop bags

Will every laptop fit in a bag with the same inch size?

No. The inch size refers to the screen diagonal. Also check your laptop’s width, depth and thickness, and compare these with the laptop compartment. Even a small difference can prevent the zip from closing properly.

Is a laptop sleeve enough for everyday transport?

A laptop sleeve mainly protects against scratches and minor knocks. For cycling, travelling on a crowded train or carrying accessories alongside your laptop, a bag with a padded compartment often provides more structure. A sleeve inside a backpack can offer extra protection, as long as the bag is not overfilled.

How can I keep a laptop bag usable for longer?

Distribute heavy items evenly, avoid overloading the bag and use the laptop compartment for its intended purpose. Clean the bag according to the care label or with a damp cloth when recommended. Allow a wet bag to air-dry completely and do not store your laptop bag while it is damp.
