Choosing a laptop bag: how to find the right bag for work, study and travel

A laptop bag needs to do more than simply carry your computer. Commuters have to contend with rain and full bicycle panniers, students often carry books and accessories, while business travellers want to attach their bag to a suitcase. Yet when shopping, people often focus mainly on colour and price.

That can lead to practical problems. A bag for a 15.6-inch laptop, for example, will not automatically fit every laptop of that size. Terms such as “waterproof”, “anti-theft” and “sustainable” do not mean the same thing everywhere, either. The checks below will help reduce the risk of making the wrong purchase.

Three pitfalls when buying a laptop bag

1. Confusing screen size with external dimensions

A 15.6-inch laptop is measured diagonally. The casing can vary from one brand and model to another. So do not just check the stated screen size; also check the dimensions of the laptop compartment. A compartment that is too tight puts strain on the zip and seams, while one that is too roomy provides less support during transport.

For a 15.6-inch laptop backpack or a 15.6-inch laptop bag, it is sensible to measure your laptop: width, depth and thickness. Larger models require a 17.3-inch laptop bag. A bag with a 15.6-inch compartment is not suitable for this.

2. Reading “waterproof” when only splash resistance is meant

Many models are water-resistant, water-repellent or water repellent. This can help in light rain, but it is not the same as being waterproof during prolonged or heavy rainfall. Check the product description, closure and seams. A roll-top or covered zip can provide extra protection, but it does not guarantee that no water will get inside.

If you cycle every day, you may want to consider a separate rain cover. If in doubt, choose a laptop bag in which the computer is also held in a padded, raised compartment.

3. Mistaking lots of compartments for good organisation

A laptop bag with compartments is not automatically well organised. Pay attention to the position of the laptop compartment, the space for the charger and how accessible smaller items are. A laptop shoulder bag is convenient for short distances, but a full bag can feel heavy on one side. A laptop backpack generally distributes the weight across both shoulders.

Also check whether a USB port is actually just a cable passthrough. Many bags require a separate power bank; the bag does not charge itself.

Important features to check

Size and protection

Look for a padded laptop compartment and, ideally, a design where the laptop does not touch the ground directly when the bag is put down. According to its own product description, DELL states that the EcoLoop Briefcase has 360° foam padding. This is a product specification, not a guarantee against every type of damage.

A work laptop bag often provides enough room for documents and accessories. For a travel laptop bag, a trolley strap, sturdy handles and a wide opening are also useful.

Material and care

Nylon, polyester, canvas and leather all have different properties. Nylon is often lightweight and hard-wearing; canvas has a more casual look; leather can be heavier and requires different care. Also check the zips, stitching and base.

When choosing a sustainable laptop bag, it is important to look for a specific material statement. According to the product information, the DELL EcoLoop is made from 100% recycled polyester. HP Professional models use recycled material, according to HP’s product information. However, a material claim does not automatically say anything about the product’s overall environmental impact or lifespan.

Comfort and everyday use

Look for an adjustable shoulder strap, padded carrying straps and a handle that does not dig in when the bag is full. According to the product description, reflective details can help improve visibility during the commute. A laptop briefcase suits a formal working environment, while a backpack may be more practical on a bicycle or public transport.

RFID protection is only relevant if you carry bank cards or other RFID-enabled cards. According to the product description, an RFID compartment can help limit scanning by readers, but it does not prevent every risk associated with loss or theft.

Frequently asked questions about laptop bags

Will every 15.6-inch laptop fit in a 15.6-inch laptop bag?

No. Screen size is only one measurement. Also check the width, depth and thickness of your laptop and compare these with the laptop compartment. With gaming laptops, pay particular attention to their larger casing and ventilation openings.

Is a waterproof laptop bag necessary in the Netherlands?

For everyday use, a water-resistant bag may be sufficient, but pay attention to the precise product description. “Water repellent” or “water resistant” usually refers to protection against splashes or light rain. For prolonged rainfall, a rain cover or additional protective cover is a sensible addition.

How long does a laptop bag last?

Its lifespan depends on use, load, care and the quality of the zips and seams. Do not overfill the bag, avoid placing sharp objects next to the laptop compartment and follow the cleaning instructions. In the EU, many products are covered by a legal guarantee of at least two years; this is separate from normal wear and tear or damage caused by incorrect use.
