Choosing lamps and lighting: practical tips for every room

Finding the right lamp seems simple until you have to choose between a floor lamp, ceiling lamp, LED lamp or outdoor lamp. Product photos often focus mainly on the design, while important details such as the fitting, light output, colour temperature and IP rating are less visible. As a result, a lamp may turn out to be too bright, too dim, difficult to operate or unsuitable for the room after purchase.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I mainly filter products based on verifiable specifications. This helps prevent a beautiful gold floor lamp from ending up as nothing more than decoration, or a dimmable lamp from being incompatible with your existing controls.

Three common lighting pitfalls

1. Focusing only on appearance and size

A lamp may look compact in a product photo, but take up considerably more space in reality. So don’t just measure the height; also check the diameter, depth and where the cable will run. For example, an arc lamp that is almost 180 cm high and more than a metre deep requires a different layout from a slim black floor lamp.

Also consider the height when choosing a ceiling lamp. A crystal ceiling lamp with hanging elements can get in the way more easily in a low-ceilinged room than a flat LED model.

2. Confusing ‘dimmable’ with full adjustability

Dimmability can mean different things. Some lamps only work with an external dimmer, while others have touch controls, a remote control or built-in light adjustment. Also check whether the colour temperature can be adjusted as well as the brightness.

For example, a ceiling lamp with a remote control may offer various lighting modes, while a lamp with a standard on/off switch will not. With a separate E27 or G9 bulb, you should also check whether the light source itself is dimmable.

3. Mixing up indoor and outdoor use

An IP rating indicates how well a product is protected against dust and moisture. IP20 is intended for dry indoor areas. IP44 provides protection against splashing water, but does not automatically make a lamp suitable for prolonged exposure to rain. IP54 offers greater protection against dust and splashing water, but placement and maintenance are still important.

A lamp without an IP rating, such as the Atmosphera Keli, should be used indoors according to the product details. For garden lighting or an outdoor lamp, the IP rating, secure positioning and the manufacturer’s instructions are important points to check.

Important specifications for lamps and lighting

Fitting and light source

First, check which fitting you need:

  • E27: a widely used large screw fitting, commonly found in floor lamps and table lamps.
  • G9: a compact fitting often used in decorative ceiling lamps and fittings with multiple light points.
  • Integrated LED: the LED module is built in. You do not need to buy a separate bulb, but the light source often cannot be replaced separately.

Also check the maximum wattage. The Atmosphera Keli has one E27 fitting and supports a maximum of 60 W according to the product information. The light source is not included. With a fitting that uses G9 fittings, such as the vidaXL ceiling lamp with crystal beads, the G9 bulbs are also not included.

Light output and colour temperature

Lumens indicate how much light a lamp produces. A higher number of lumens generally means more light, but the distribution and shape of the shade also play a part. For ambient living room lighting, a softer light source may be pleasant, while bedroom lighting often benefits from a warmer and less intense setting.

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin:

  • Around 2700–3000 K: warm white, suitable for relaxation and ambient lighting.
  • Around 4000 K: more neutral white for general lighting.
  • Up to approximately 6500 K: cooler light, often intended for practical tasks.

According to the product specifications, the Brilliant LED arc lamp has an adjustable range of 3000 to 6500 K. Philips’ SuperSlim ceiling lamp states a range of 2200 to 6500 K and five lighting settings via the remote control.

Controls, cable and installation

Check whether the lamp uses an in-line switch, touch controls, a remote control or a fixed wall switch. Also check the cable length and whether ceiling installation is required. When installing a ceiling lamp, switch off the electricity and use suitable mounting materials. Place a floor lamp on a flat, stable surface, and make sure the cable does not create a trip hazard.

Product choices for different uses

Why it suits this profile: This black floor lamp combines an arc design with adjustable brightness and colour temperature. It is ideal for a living room where the same lamp needs to provide both ambient and practical lighting.

How this product avoids the pitfall

The product details state both the dimensions and IP20. This makes it clear that the arc lamp is intended for dry indoor areas, not bathrooms or gardens.

Key benefit & advantages

1300 lumens, integrated LED, touch dimmer and CCT adjustment from 3000 to 6500 K. According to the specifications, the cable is 228 cm long.

Suitable for: Specific uses & intensive users

Extra considerations for bathrooms, bedrooms and gardens

For a bathroom, design is not the only important consideration. Check the IP rating and the recommended installation zone in the product information. A fitting without a clearly stated IP rating is not a sensible choice for a damp environment.

In the bedroom, warm colour temperatures and simple controls are often practical. A G9 ceiling lamp with three light points can create a decorative look, but check beforehand whether the light sources are included. For an atmospheric style, the vidaXL Ceiling Light with Crystal Beads is worth considering; the specifications state that it has three G9 fittings, 5 W per light point and IP44.

Wireless use can be convenient for garden lighting. According to the product details, the Brilliant LED Rechargeable Floor Lamp has an integrated LED, 340 lumens, 3000 K, an 18650 battery and IP54. Place this outdoor lamp on a flat surface and do not expose it to heavy rain or submersion.

Frequently asked questions about lamps and lighting

How many lumens do I need for a living room?

This depends on the size of the room, its purpose and the number of light points. Don’t just look at the lumens per lamp; consider the light distribution too. A ceiling lamp usually provides general lighting, while a floor lamp can provide additional light in a seating area.

Are LED lamps cheaper to run?

An LED lamp often uses fewer watts than older lighting technologies for a similar light output. So compare the wattage, lumen value and stated energy consumption per 1,000 hours. For example, the Brilliant LED arc lamp states a consumption of 12 kWh per 1,000 hours in the product details. Actual consumption depends on how long it is used and which lighting setting you choose.

Can I dim every lamp?

No. Check that the fitting, light source and controls are all suitable for dimming. With integrated LED lighting, the dimming function must be built into the fitting. With an E27 or G9 bulb, check whether the separate bulb is dimmable and whether an external dimmer is supported.
