Choosing lamps and lighting: how to avoid making the wrong purchase

Buying a new lamp seems straightforward, until you discover that the light colour is unsuitable, the lamp cannot be dimmed or an outdoor light does not offer enough protection against moisture. With lamps and lighting, it is therefore not just about appearance or a low price. The connection, light output, IP rating and controls determine whether a product is practical to use.

Three common pitfalls deserve particular attention:

  • Confusing lumens with wattage: watts indicate energy consumption, while lumens describe the amount of light. A low-wattage lamp can therefore still produce plenty of light.
  • Choosing an “outdoor” product without the right IP rating: a product for a balcony or patio must withstand the conditions in which you intend to use it. IP20 is only suitable for dry indoor spaces; IP44 offers protection against splashing water, while IP54 protects against dust and splashing water according to the product classification.
  • Assuming a lamp is dimmable without checking: not every LED bulb, integrated LED module or smart lamp works with an existing dimmer. Check this before buying, particularly with ceiling lights and E27 LED bulbs.

The key parameters when choosing lamps and lighting

1. Light colour and light output

Colour temperature is expressed in kelvin (K):

  • 2700K: warm white lighting for the living room, bedroom or dining table.
  • 3000K: warm to neutral light, for example for a hallway, balcony or patio.
  • 4000K and above: cooler light that is often suitable for workspaces.
  • 3000K–6500K: adjustable light, as found in some smart ceiling lights.

Also pay attention to lumens (lm). A table lamp with 140 lumens is mainly intended to create atmosphere, while 340 lumens from a floor lamp can illuminate a larger area. A higher light output is generally preferable for a ceiling light. For example, the Aigostar ceiling light in this selection lists 3960 lumens.

2. Connection and replaceability

Check whether you need a separate light source. A fitting with an E27 socket gives you the freedom to install a different LED bulb later. The Atmosphera tripod lamp has an E27 socket and is suitable for up to 25W; the light source is selected separately.

An outdoor fitting with a GU10 socket also works with a separate bulb. The Brilliant Jelani is supplied without a light source and supports a GU10 bulb of up to 10W. This is useful if you want to choose the light colour or brightness yourself.

With integrated LED lighting, the light source is already built into the product. This makes the lamp compact, but according to the product information, it cannot be replaced with a different light source. Check the colour temperature, light output and dimming functions beforehand.

3. IP rating, controls and installation

IP20 is often sufficient for dry rooms. Do not use an IP20 table lamp or ceiling light in a damp bathroom or an exposed outdoor environment.

For balconies, patios and gardens, outdoor lights with a suitable IP rating are the more sensible choice. IP44 is suitable for splashing water, while IP54 offers additional protection against dust. Neither rating means that a lamp may be submerged or exposed to heavy rain for long periods.

Also consider the controls:

  • A touch dimmer is practical for rechargeable lamps.
  • A wall switch is suitable for simple E27 LED bulbs.
  • Bluetooth Mesh can enable control via an app.
  • RGB mood lighting is intended for colour accents; warm white lighting is generally more suitable for everyday use.

The power must be switched off before installing fixed ceiling and outdoor lights. Have a hardwired fitting, such as an outdoor wall light, installed by a qualified electrician.

Frequently asked questions about lamps and lighting

Are LED bulbs cheaper to run?

LED bulbs generally use fewer watts than traditional bulbs for a similar light output. That is why you should look at both wattage and the number of lumens. The Philips E27 LED bulbs in this selection list 4.9W and 470 lumens per light point. Actual consumption depends on the number of hours the bulb is switched on and the local electricity price. The stated saving comes from Philips’ product information; always check the energy label and packaging for the latest details.

Which lamp is suitable for a bathroom or outdoors?

Check the IP rating and the installation zone. IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. IP44 provides protection against splashing water and may be suitable for sheltered outdoor locations, such as a balcony or covered patio. IP54 also offers a higher level of dust protection. Always follow the installation instructions and do not place a lamp where it may come into direct contact with jets of water or become submerged.

How long do integrated LED bulbs last?

Lifespan varies depending on the model, operating conditions and heat dissipation. Some product descriptions state an expected lifespan, but this is not a guarantee for every use case. With an integrated LED bulb, replacing the light source is often not possible according to the product information. If you want more choice of light colour or dimming functionality in the future, consider a fitting with an E27 or GU10 socket.
