Buying lamps: how to choose lighting that suits your space and needs

Buying lamps seems simple enough, until you have to choose between a ceiling light, pendant light, floor lamp or outdoor lighting. A model may look great in the product photo, yet provide too little light, fail to fit your ceiling junction box or be unsuitable for a damp location. Carrying out the right checks beforehand can help you avoid a disappointing purchase.

Three common lighting pitfalls

1. Focusing only on appearance

A lamp may complement a modern, Scandinavian or natural interior beautifully, but its dimensions determine whether it is practical. A large pendant light in a small hallway may hang too low and get in the way. Conversely, a compact ceiling light may not spread enough light across a spacious living room.

So pay attention to the diameter, height, light distribution and number of light points. Measure the available space before ordering, too.

2. Confusing dimmability with adjustable colour temperature

Not every LED lamp is dimmable. Some lamps simply have an on/off switch, while others work with a touch dimmer, remote control or app. Dimming is also different from changing the colour temperature.

  • Warm white light around 2700–3000 K generally creates a relaxed atmosphere in the living room or bedroom.
  • Neutral white light around 4000 K is practical for a kitchen, workspace or hallway.
  • Cool white light up to around 6500 K can be suitable when bright task lighting is required.

Check whether the light source is included. With a fitting such as E14 or G9, you will often need to buy an LED bulb separately.

3. Overlooking the IP rating and installation requirements

An indoor lamp with IP20 is not designed for direct contact with water. For a covered outdoor area, façade or garden, you need a model with a suitable protection rating, such as IP65 on certain solar outdoor lamps.

For ceiling lighting, you should also check that the connection, mounting points and weight are suitable for your ceiling. Switch off the power at the consumer unit before installing electrical lighting. If in doubt, it is wise to seek help from a qualified installer.

Important specifications to check before buying lamps

Light output: lumens rather than watts

Watts primarily indicate energy consumption. The amount of visible light is measured in lumens. For example, a 2300-lumen ceiling light produces a different amount of light from a decorative lamp with three separate fittings. Consider both the room and the intended use:

  • Hallway or small bedroom: a compact ceiling light is often sufficient.
  • Living room: combine general living-room lighting with a floor lamp or focused light points.
  • Dining table: a pendant light can provide focused illumination, but pay attention to the hanging height.
  • Garden or patio: check the battery life, charging time, beam angle and IP rating.

Light source and lifespan

An integrated LED lamp is neatly concealed and often easy to operate, but the light module cannot be replaced on some models. The Brilliant Led Arc Lamp, for example, has an integrated LED module. According to the product description, the entire lamp must be replaced when it reaches the end of its service life.

With a fitting that uses a replaceable bulb, such as E14 or G9, you can replace the light source separately. This gives you greater freedom to choose the colour temperature and light output. Always check the maximum wattage; according to the stated product specifications, some Atmosphera models are limited to 25 W per fitting.

Materials and maintenance

Metal is commonly used for the base of a ceiling light or floor lamp. Paper, bamboo and plastic can create a softer lighting effect, but require suitable care and sufficient distance from heat sources. For example, a paper lampshade should not be placed near an open flame or hot light source.

Frequently asked questions about buying lamps

Which lamp is suitable for a low-ceilinged living room?

For a low ceiling, choose a flush ceiling light or a compact model with a shallow profile. As well as the diameter, check the installation height and light distribution. A ceiling light measuring 8 cm in height, such as the Brilliant Teranon, may be suitable for rooms with limited vertical space, based on the stated dimensions.

Is an LED lamp cheaper to run?

LED lighting generally uses less electricity than older light sources while providing a comparable light output. To compare products, check the wattage, lumen value and stated consumption in kWh per 1000 hours. With integrated LED models, you should also check whether the light module can be replaced.

Can I dim every lamp?

No. Dimmability must be explicitly stated in the product specifications. Also check whether you need a separate dimmer, remote control, touch control or app. With a smart ceiling light, you should also check whether it is controlled via Bluetooth or another system. This helps ensure that the lamp is technically compatible with your existing installation.
