A lamp can look great in a product photo and still disappoint at home. A floor lamp may provide too little light, a table lamp may take up too much space, or a dimmable lamp may only work with a suitable light source. Terms such as “energy efficient” and “modern design” also mean little when important specifications are missing.
So pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:
Light output is measured in lumens (lm). A reading lamp or desk lamp needs focused light, while a decorative table lamp may be better suited to creating atmosphere. A higher light output can be useful in a living room, especially when one lamp is lighting a large part of the space.
The colour temperature, measured in kelvin (K), affects the look and feel of the light:
An LED floor lamp with several colour temperatures gives you greater flexibility. However, check whether the lamp is continuously dimmable or only offers a few preset levels.
With a lamp featuring an E27 fitting, you can usually choose a suitable light source yourself. Always check the maximum wattage. For example, the Brilliant Desk Lamp has an E27 fitting and is suitable for a standard bulb rated up to 40 W. The light source is not included, so you can fit an LED bulb separately.
A tripod lamp may also have an E27 fitting. The maximum load for the Atmosphera Tripod Lamp is 25 W. The fitting has an on/off switch on the cable and is supplied without a light source.
An integrated LED lamp works differently. The LED module in the Brilliant Led Arc Lamp is built in. The lamp has a power rating of 14 W, a light output of 1300 lumens and an adjustable colour temperature of 3000 to 6500 K. The description states that the LED module cannot be replaced. This is an important difference compared with a fitting that uses a separate E27 or E14 bulb.
Measure the space where you plan to place the lamp before ordering. Consider not only the height, but also the base, depth and reach. An arc lamp can take up a lot of space because of its curved arm, while a clamp or desk lamp uses very little workspace.
For outdoor use, the IP rating is important:
The Brilliant Led Rechargeable Floor Lamp is 125 cm high, has a light output of 340 lumens, warm white light at 3000 K and an IP54 rating. According to the product description, this rechargeable lamp is intended for outdoor use, for example on a balcony, patio or in the garden. Place the lamp on a flat, stable surface and protect it from heavy rain.
Why it suits this profile: This compact tripod lamp fits on a side table, cabinet or bedside table and features a black metal design. It is ideal if you want to add atmospheric lighting with a single fitting without installing a large floor lamp.
The dimensions, E27 fitting and maximum load of 25 W are specified. This means you can choose a suitable light source in advance.
45 cm high, 18 cm wide and fitted with a cable switch. The light source can be replaced.
Why it suits this profile: This tall arc lamp combines a modern silhouette with adjustable colour temperature and dimming. It works well beside a sofa, in a reading corner or in a spacious living room.
The specifications state 1300 lumens, 14 W, IP20 and an integrated, non-replaceable LED module. This makes the light output and maintenance requirements clear before purchase.
179 cm high, dimmable, touch control and adjustable colour temperature from 3000 to 6500 K.
Why it suits this profile: The clamp base saves space on a desk or shelf. This adjustable lamp is therefore suitable for reading, hobbies and focused lighting in a compact workspace.
The head and joints are adjustable. The lamp has an IP20 rating, making it clear that it is intended only for dry indoor spaces.
70 cm high, 1.6-metre cable, black metal housing and an E27 fitting for an LED light source of your choice.
Why it suits this profile: This rechargeable lamp works without a fixed power connection, so it can be placed flexibly on a patio, balcony or in the garden.
The IP54 rating and safety warning make it clear that splashing water is acceptable, but heavy rain and immersion should be avoided.
125 cm high, 340 lumens, 3000 K, three dimming levels and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.
A reading lamp should provide focused, adjustable light. A desk lamp with an adjustable head or a floor lamp with a reading arm is often more practical than a purely decorative table lamp. Also check the light output in lumens and choose a colour temperature that is comfortable for the room.
Lifespan varies depending on the model, usage time and heat dissipation. With a lamp that has a separate fitting, you can replace the LED light source. With integrated LED lighting, as found in some modern lamps, the entire fitting must be replaced when the module reaches the end of its service life. So check the replacement information before you buy.
Consumption depends on the power rating in watts and the number of hours the lamp is used. A 10 W LED lamp uses less electricity in one hour than a 40 W light source. However, a low wattage does not automatically mean sufficient light. So compare wattage AND lumens, and for outdoor lighting also check the battery capacity and charging method.
