Choosing lamps without costly mistakes: a practical guide for indoors and outdoors

Buying a new lamp seems straightforward, until you discover that the fitting is incompatible, the cable is too short or the lamp is not suitable for a damp location. When it comes to lamps, it is therefore not just about colour and design. Dimensions, light source, IP rating and controls all determine whether a product works well in practice.

Common pitfalls when buying lamps

1. Confusing a fitting with a complete lamp

Many light fittings are supplied without a light source. A wall lamp with a GU10 fitting or an outdoor lamp with an E27 fitting therefore requires a separate LED bulb. Check the following in advance:

  • The fitting: for example, E27 or GU10.
  • The maximum wattage of the fitting.
  • Whether the lamp is dimmable and whether it requires a suitable dimmer.
  • Whether the light source can be replaced.

An E27 bulb is a common choice for table lamps, floor lamps and some outdoor lamps. GU10 is often used for spotlights and compact wall lamps.

2. Mistaking IP44 for complete waterproofing

An outdoor lamp with IP44 is protected against solid objects larger than 1 millimetre and splashing water from different directions. This does not mean that the lamp can withstand a direct jet of water, immersion or prolonged exposure to heavy rain.

Placement is therefore important for garden lighting, balconies and patios. Ideally, install an IP44 wall lamp on a sheltered wall and prevent water from collecting around the fitting. A lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces and should not be used outdoors.

3. Looking only at the appearance

A retro lamp or modern light may suit your interior perfectly but still be impractical. Also consider:

  • The height and base diameter.
  • The length of the cable.
  • The stability of the base or clamp.
  • The direction in which the light shines.
  • How it is operated: button, pull cord, touch control, remote control or app.

For example, a decorative table lamp is not automatically suitable as a reading lamp. For focused lighting, an adjustable arm, swivelling head or separate reading function is often more important than the design alone.

Key specifications explained

Light source and energy consumption

An LED lamp generally uses less energy than a traditional incandescent or halogen lamp while producing a similar amount of light. Do not look only at wattage; pay particular attention to the number of lumens. Wattage indicates energy consumption, while lumens give a better indication of the amount of light produced.

An integrated LED is compact and ready to use, but the light source often cannot be replaced. With a fitting featuring an E27 or GU10 socket, you can choose a different colour temperature, brightness level or dimmable bulb later on.

Colour temperature and dimmability

Light colour is expressed in Kelvin:

  • Around 2700–3000 K: warm white, suitable for living rooms, bedrooms and ambient lighting.
  • Around 4000 K: neutral white, practical for a desk or kitchen.
  • Around 6000 K: cool white, particularly suitable when bright task lighting is required.

A dimmable lamp will only work properly when the lamp, fitting and dimmer are compatible. A product with three colour temperatures or several brightness settings can be useful when one lamp needs to suit different situations.

Dimensions and installation

Measure the available space before ordering. A 180 cm floor lamp needs sufficient headroom and must stand securely. A 46 cm table lamp may be suitable for a sideboard but too large for a small bedside table.

A clamp lamp saves desk space, but the clamp must suit the thickness and shape of the tabletop. Also check that the surface is stable enough. For fixed outdoor lighting connected to 230 volts, installation by a qualified electrician is recommended.

Choosing lamps for each room

  • Living room: choose a floor lamp, standard lamp or uplighter for general lighting. A separate reading lamp next to the sofa provides more focused light.
  • Workspace: a desk lamp with an adjustable head prevents the light from falling on just one part of the desk.
  • Bedroom: a table lamp with warm white light and a simple switch is practical beside the bed.
  • Hallway: a wall lamp can save space. Check in advance that the wiring and installation are suitable.
  • Garden, balcony or patio: only use an outdoor lamp with an appropriate IP rating, such as IP44 for sheltered applications.
  • Characterful interiors: a retro lamp or pendant lamp with an E27 fitting allows you to replace the light source later.

Frequently asked questions about lamps

How many lumens do I need for a desk lamp?

This depends on the distance from the work surface, the lampshade and the level of brightness you want. Check the lumen output of the chosen light source and consider whether it can be adjusted. A lamp that can be directed is often more practical than a fixed light source with a higher wattage.

Is a cordless table lamp suitable for outdoor use?

Not automatically. A cordless table lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces only. Always check the IP rating before placing a lamp on a balcony, patio or in the garden.

How much does an LED lamp cost to run per year?

Use this simple calculation: wattage ÷ 1000 × number of hours switched on × electricity price. A 2 W lamp that is switched on for 1,000 hours uses 2 kWh. The final cost depends on your energy tariff and how long you use the lamp. Also check whether it has a replaceable or integrated LED.
