Choosing lamps for every room: practical tips and popular choices

A lamp should do more than simply look good. The light source, dimensions, bulb fitting and protection against moisture all determine whether a purchase works well in practice. When searching online for lamps, you will quickly come across terms such as ambient lighting, energy-efficient and multifunctional. However, these descriptions do not always tell you enough about day-to-day use.

Common pitfalls when buying lamps

1. The light source is not included

With many lamps, you still need to purchase the light source yourself. This applies, for example, to various models with an E27 bulb or G9 fitting. Always check:

  • Whether the lamp is supplied with a light source.
  • Which bulb fitting is required, such as E27, E14 or G9.
  • What the maximum wattage is.
  • Whether an integrated LED module can be replaced.

An integrated LED floor lamp is ready to use straight away, but with some models the light source cannot be replaced separately. A fitting with a replaceable bulb gives you more freedom to choose a different colour temperature or brightness level later on.

2. Dimmable does not always mean that the dimmer is included

A dimmable lamp can only be adjusted when the lamp itself, the light source and, where applicable, the dimmer are all compatible. A product with an integrated touch dimmer works differently from a table lamp with a separate E27 bulb. So do not just look for the word “dimmable”; also check how the controls work.

3. An indoor lamp is used outdoors

A lamp designed for a living room or bedroom is generally not suitable for a balcony, garden or bathroom. The IP rating indicates how much protection a product offers against dust and moisture. IP20 is intended for dry indoor areas. IP54 offers greater protection against dust and splashing water, but it does not mean that a lamp can be placed in heavy rain or submerged in water.

Important specifications to compare

Brightness and colour temperature

Brightness is measured in lumens. A higher lumen figure generally means more light, but the right amount depends on the room and how you intend to use it:

  • For general lighting in a living room, a wide spread of light is practical.
  • For reading or working, more focused light is preferable.
  • For a bedroom or child’s room, warm white light of around 3000 K can create a calm atmosphere.
  • A lamp with a CCT function can switch between different colour temperatures.

Also consider the shape of the fitting. An arc lamp often spreads light from the side, above a sofa or chair. A ceiling lamp illuminates the room more centrally. A bedside light is designed to provide limited, localised light rather than lighting the entire room.

Dimensions and positioning

Measure the available space before ordering a floor lamp or pendant light. A lamp measuring 179 cm in height may be suitable next to a sofa, but it needs enough room for the base and curved arm. With a clamp table lamp, also pay attention to the thickness of the tabletop.

Also check:

  • The length of the cable.
  • The stability of the base or clamp.
  • The height in relation to seating and work surfaces.
  • Whether doors, cupboards or walkways will be obstructed.

Materials, controls and maintenance

Metal, steel, aluminium, plastic and acrylic each have a different appearance and maintenance requirements. A gold lamp made of metal can create a striking accent, while a black lamp is easier to combine with a range of interior styles.

For everyday use, the controls are just as important. An in-line switch is simple, a push button on the lamp head is practical at a workstation, and a touch dimmer can be useful when you regularly adjust the brightness.

Choosing lamps for each room

For a living room lamp, you can combine general lighting with a floor lamp or arc lamp beside the seating area. A ceiling lamp distributes light from the centre of the room, while a gold lamp or black lamp mainly adds a stylish accent.

For a bedroom lamp, a soft colour temperature and simple controls are practical. A table lamp on the bedside table or a small night light is suitable for localised lighting. In a child’s room, stable positioning, low heat output and clear safety instructions are important considerations.

For a balcony or garden, a battery-powered outdoor lamp is useful when no fixed power point is available. Check the IP rating and follow the instructions regarding rain, charging and positioning. The Brilliant rechargeable LED floor lamp, for example, has IP54, 340 lumens, 3000 K and a battery, but the product information still warns against heavy rain and immersion.

Frequently asked questions about lamps

Which lamp is suitable for a living room?

That depends on the type of lighting you want. Choose a ceiling lamp for general lighting and add a floor lamp or table lamp to a reading corner. Check the dimensions, lumen rating and whether the light source is included.

How much does a lamp cost to run?

Energy consumption depends on the wattage and the number of hours the lamp is switched on. An LED bulb generally uses fewer watts than a traditional light source while providing a similar amount of light. For integrated LED products, the specifications often state the wattage and consumption per 1000 hours. Compare this information with the lumen value, rather than looking only at the purchase price.

How long does an LED bulb last?

Lifespan varies depending on the product and conditions of use. When a manufacturer states a lifespan, you should treat it as a product specification rather than a guarantee for every situation. With an integrated LED module, it is important to check in advance whether just the light source can be replaced or whether the entire fitting needs to be replaced.
