When you want to buy lamps online, you quickly come across hundreds of models: from a floor lamp for the living room to a night light for the nursery. Yet a beautiful photo tells you little about everyday use. Will the lamp fit beside your sofa? Is the light bright enough for reading? Can you adjust the brightness? And is the lamp suitable for a balcony, or only for dry indoor spaces?
With these practical selection tips, you can avoid a disappointing purchase and compare products more effectively based on function, size and safety.
A gold lamp, retro pendant light or modern ceiling light may suit your interior, but its dimensions determine whether the model is genuinely practical. For example, a 179 cm floor lamp needs sufficient ceiling height, while a wide base can be awkward in a narrow passageway.
Always check:
Not every LED lamp is dimmable. With lamps using an E27 or E14 fitting, you will usually need to buy a suitable dimmable light source separately. With integrated LED lighting, dimming is built into the lamp itself, but the light source often cannot be replaced by the user.
So don’t just look for the word LED. Also check the lumen output, colour temperature and stated dimming function.
A rechargeable lamp or outdoor lamp with IP44 is protected against splashing water, but not against immersion or powerful jets of water. A lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. This type of model should not be used in the bathroom, on an uncovered patio or outside in the rain.
A higher IP rating does not automatically make a product suitable for every outdoor location. Also check its stability, charging method and the manufacturer’s warnings.
Wattage mainly indicates energy consumption. Lumens (lm) tell you how much light a lamp produces. A lower lumen output may be sufficient for ambient lighting in a corner of the living room. For a reading lamp or workspace, more focused and brighter lighting is generally more practical.
As a guide:
A 1300 lm lamp, such as the Brilliant Led Arc Lamp, is a different choice from a decorative night light with soft illumination.
Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). Around 2700–3000 K usually produces warm white light, which works well in a living room, bedroom or dining area. A range of up to 6500 K offers greater flexibility for different situations, although cooler light may be less suitable if you are mainly looking to create a calm atmosphere.
A dimmable lamp with adjustable colour temperature is useful when one light point needs to serve several purposes. Do check whether it is operated via a touch switch, in-line switch or remote control.
With an E27 or E14 lamp, the fitting is more important than the appearance of the shade or fixture. Check:
The Atmosphera Keli Floor Lamp does not include a bulb. The fixture has one E27 fitting and a maximum wattage of 60 W. The Atmosphera Keli Table Lamp also has an E27 fitting, with a maximum wattage of 40 W, and is listed as non-dimmable in the product information.
Why it suits this profile: A compact table lamp for a desk, bedside table or side table, with no complicated assembly required.
The dimensions of 13 x 13 x 46 cm and the weight of 0.74 kg are clearly stated. This means you can check in advance whether you have enough surface space.
Metal housing, E27 fitting, 150 cm cable and an in-line switch. The lamp is intended for indoor use.
Why it suits this profile: A floor lamp for anyone who wants one light point for creating ambience, reading and different times of day.
The product information states both the light output and the adjustable colour temperature. You do not have to rely on appearance alone.
179 cm high, 1300 lm, dimmable, 3000–6500 K and touch control. The cable is approximately 2.28 metres long. IP20 means it is for dry indoor spaces only.
Why it suits this profile: Practical as a night light in a nursery or bedroom, especially if you do not want to use a socket next to the bed.
The lamp runs on an integrated rechargeable battery and has three brightness levels. This makes its operation more specific than a general claim about “ambient lighting”.
1200mAh battery, USB charging, touch control and a housing made from silicone, ABS and PP. Use indoors only and keep the lamp away from heat and water.
Why it suits this profile: A cordless outdoor lamp for a table on the balcony, patio or in the garden, with USB as an alternative when there is little sunlight.
The IP44 classification makes it clear that the lamp is protected against splashing water, not waterproof. Place the model on a stable surface and never in standing water.
170 lm, warm white light at 3000 K, three dimming settings and charging via solar panel or USB. The height can be adjusted using two mounting heights.
We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.
Use this quick checklist when you are buying lamps:
In the EU, electrical products are also covered by statutory consumer rights. The product information for the models mentioned states that they come with a statutory warranty of at least two years. This is separate from the expected lifespan of an LED module or battery.
A reading lamp should ideally have an adjustable light head or reading arm, sufficient lumen output and a light colour that is comfortable for the room. A table lamp with 650 lm, such as the Brilliant Katrina, can be adjusted in the desired direction and is suitable for a desk or reading area. A floor lamp with a separate reading arm offers greater flexibility beside a sofa.
An LED lamp generally uses less power than traditional light sources for a comparable application, but actual consumption depends on wattage and how long it is used. Check the stated power rating and, for some models, the European energy efficiency class. An integrated LED lamp also cannot always be replaced, so check this before buying.
Not automatically. Check the IP classification and the safety requirements for the specific location. A model with IP20 is intended for dry spaces only. A lamp with IP44 is protected against splashing water, but must still be kept away from direct water and immersion. Always follow the installation instructions and switch off the electricity before installation or replacing a light source.
