Choosing instant coffee: how to find the right instant coffee for your moment

Making a cup of coffee without a coffee machine is handy at home, in the office and on the go. Yet products in the instant coffee category vary widely. A sachet of cappuccino often contains sugar and creamer, whereas black instant coffee sometimes contains nothing but coffee. The portion size, brewing method and origin can also influence your choice.

So look out for these common pitfalls before you buy instant coffee:

  • A striking flavour name doesn’t tell you everything. “Mocha”, “caramel” or “hazelnut” can mean the sachet is mostly sugar, creamer and flavourings. Always check the ingredients list.
  • A large pack isn’t automatically better value. With individual sachets, you’re often paying extra for convenience. Compare the total weight and the number of cups you can make.
  • Arabica, freeze-dried and crema aren’t a guarantee of the taste you want. These are product characteristics, not universal quality ratings. A mild Arabica coffee, for example, may be less suitable if you’re after a strong, bitter cup.

Which specifications should you check?

1. Ingredients and nutritional values

For a simple black coffee, look for a short ingredients list, ideally with just instant coffee. Nescafé Gold Instant Coffee 200 g, for instance, lists instant coffee as the ingredient. The product description mentions carefully selected, lightly roasted Arabica coffee beans and a mild flavour.

With instant cappuccino, instant latte and flavoured coffees, sugar and milk components are often a key part of the recipe. According to the product information, Trung Nguyen Legend Cappuccino Hazelnut contains sugar, creamer, milk components and 12% instant coffee. This gives a creamier, sweeter profile, but it’s quite different from black coffee with just water.

Also check for allergens. Douwe Egberts Dubai Chocolate Style Instant Coffee lists milk on the label. Other products state that they contain none of the 14 main EU allergens. Always re-check the packaging if anything changes.

2. Portion, water amount and brewing method

A sachet is practical, but the recommended amount of water varies from product to product:

  • SLAB TOWN Freeze-Dried Instant Coffee uses 2.8 g per serving with roughly 200 ml of water or milk.
  • Office Fish flavoured coffee uses 2 g with 150–200 ml of water, depending on the variant and desired preparation.
  • Trung Nguyen G7 Cappuccino Mocha contains 12 sachets of 18 g.
  • Xiang Yue Caramel Macchiato recommends one 22 g sachet with 150 ml of hot water.

If you want a consistent strength, choose portion packs with clear brewing instructions. For home use, a jar like Nescafé Gold 200 g can be more flexible: you decide how much powder to add. For keeping in your work bag or desk drawer, coffee sachets are simpler and less prone to spillage.

3. Coffee type, solubility and caffeine

Freeze-dried coffee is often chosen for its quick solubility and the dry, easy-to-store powder. SLAB TOWN mentions 100% coffee powder and individual sticks. The products are designed for preparation with hot or cold water, milk or another base.

Pay close attention to the source of any caffeine claims. Yongpu states in its product description that it uses 100% Arabica coffee and a caffeine content of at least 200 mg per kilogram. The manufacturer does not recommend the product for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women due to the high caffeine content. That’s brand information; if in doubt, compare the current packaging and consider your total caffeine intake.

For Arabica instant coffee, you could look at Nescafé Gold, Office Fish or Luckin variants that list Arabica as an ingredient. G’woon Instant Red Coffee, on the other hand, lists Robusta as an ingredient in the product information provided. The difference alone doesn’t tell you which coffee you’ll prefer, but it does help you compare products more fairly.

Frequently asked questions about instant coffee

How do you prepare instant coffee?

Put the recommended amount of powder or one sachet into a cup. Add the amount of water stated on the packaging and stir well. With flavoured mixes, don’t usually use boiling water if the label specifies a lower temperature. You can also prepare many variants with milk or cold water.

How long does instant coffee keep?

Store an opened jar or box in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Seal the packaging properly and check the best-before information on the label. Individual sachets stay good as long as the packaging is undamaged. A liquid concentrate may have additional storage advice after opening, such as keeping it refrigerated; follow the product packaging for that.

Is instant coffee cheaper than coffee from a machine?

That depends on the portion and the product. Pure instant coffee in a large jar can be good value per cup, whereas individual cappuccino or latte sachets cost extra for creamer, flavour and portion packaging. So compare the price per 100 g and, where possible, the price per prepared cup.
