A new lamp often seems like a straightforward purchase. However, it is only after installation or use that you find out whether the lighting is practical. A lamp may look attractive but provide too little light for a desk. An outdoor lamp may be cordless but unsuitable for direct rain. And a dimming function does not always work with every LED bulb or fitting.
As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I filter the most important product specifications and translate them into practical choices. This helps you avoid choosing based solely on design, wattage or marketing terms.
Wattage indicates how much electrical power a lamp uses. It does not directly tell you how much light you will get. For that, look at the number of lumens:
An LED bulb can produce plenty of light while using relatively little wattage. When comparing LED bulbs, always consider lumens, wattage and colour temperature together.
A lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. This applies, for example, to many ceiling lights, desk lamps and living-room floor lamps. For a balcony, patio or garden, you need an IP rating that indicates protection against moisture.
The rating consists of two digits. The second digit relates to water:
You should still place an IP44 or IP54 lamp on a stable surface, not in a puddle or beneath an eaves where large amounts of water run off.
“Dimmable” does not automatically mean that every control method will work. Check whether the lamp uses a built-in dimmer, touch control, remote control or external dimmer. With lamps that have a separate light source, the LED bulb itself must also be dimmable.
Also consider the colour temperature:
With a lamp that has a fitting, such as E14 or E27, you usually purchase the light source separately. This gives you flexibility: you can later choose a different colour temperature or install a dimmable LED bulb. Always check the maximum wattage.
With an integrated LED bulb, the light source is built into the fitting. This often makes the design more compact, but it may not always be possible for the user to replace it. Before ordering, check the brightness, colour temperature and intended use.
Measure not only the available space, but also the walking route and height. A 180 cm floor lamp may fit beside a sofa but be less suitable in a narrow hallway. For ceiling lights, check the diameter and height, especially in rooms with low ceilings.
For outdoor lamps, stability and the surface they stand on are important. A lightweight rechargeable table lamp can be handy on a balcony, but it should stand on a level table to prevent it from being knocked over.
Choose the power supply based on how you intend to use the lamp:
A long cable makes positioning easier, but place it so that it does not create a trip hazard.
Why it suits this profile: This compact ceiling light is designed for indoor use and has three adjustable light points. This makes it suitable for a hallway, bedroom or smaller living room.
The specifications clearly state the E14 fitting, three light points and a maximum of 25 W. The light sources are not included, so remember to allow for an additional purchase.
25 cm diameter, steel base, FSC-certified paper shade and adjustable light sources.
Why it suits this profile: This floor lamp is suitable for a living room, office or reading corner where flexibility in light colour and control is important.
The product details list three colour temperatures: 3000 K, 4000 K and 6000 K. You are therefore not limited to one fixed light colour. However, the lamp is intended for indoor use.
180 cm high, 14 W, remote control with a range of up to 10 metres according to the product specification, and a stable iron base.
Why it suits this profile: This cordless lamp is practical for a patio, balcony or garden where no permanent socket is available.
The IP54 rating clearly defines its limits: splashing water is permitted, but the lamp must not be immersed or exposed to heavy rain.
340 lumens, warm white light at 3000 K, integrated battery, USB connection and a three-level dimmer.
Why it suits this profile: This adjustable desk lamp is well suited to work, study and reading areas where focused light matters more than general illumination.
The lamp has a swivelling head and height-adjustable arm. This allows you to direct the light onto your work surface rather than relying solely on decorative lighting.
Integrated 8.5 W LED bulb, 650 lumens, warm white light at 2700 K and a 150 cm cable.
We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.
An LED bulb generally uses little power in relation to the amount of light it produces. Compare the wattage for a similar number of lumens. To calculate running costs, multiply the wattage by the number of hours the lamp is on and your electricity tariff. A 10 W lamp that is switched on for five hours a day uses less energy than a 30 W lamp used for the same length of time, but always check the actual light output.
Only if the product specifications permit outdoor use. Check the IP rating, charging method and safety instructions. A lamp with IP20 should remain indoors. A model with IP44 or IP54 is not automatically waterproof; protect the lamp from immersion, direct water jets and prolonged heavy rain.
Lifespan varies according to the product and conditions of use. Check the stated operating hours, warranty terms and whether the light source can be replaced. With an integrated LED bulb, bear in mind that the light source may not be replaceable by the user. With lamps featuring an E14 or E27 fitting, you can usually install a new LED bulb later.
