Choosing indoor lighting: how to find a lamp that suits your space and interior

Choosing a new lamp seems simple, until you discover how many details affect everyday use. A table lamp, for example, may look lovely but provide too little light for reading. A pendant lamp may fit above the dining table, while the cable turns out to be just too short. And a gold or glass lamp may look subtle in the shop but become a strong focal point in your interior at home.

Use these practical checks to avoid costly mistakes and choose indoor lighting based on dimensions, fitting, light source and intended use.

Three common pitfalls when choosing indoor lighting

1. Looking at appearance alone

An industrial lamp, chandelier or bamboo lamp is often chosen for its design. However, the dimensions and light distribution also determine whether it is suitable. Always check:

  • the overall height and width;
  • the diameter of the shade;
  • the length of the cord or adjustable cable;
  • the position of the switch;
  • whether the light is directed straight down, spread around the room or focused in one direction.

A large pendant lamp above a small table can make the room feel visually cluttered. A slim wall lamp, on the other hand, may be ideal for a hallway, reading nook or workspace.

2. Confusing a fitting with a light source

A lamp does not always come with a light source. For example, the LED bulb is not included with the Atmosphera Collectionneur Glass and Gold Metal Lamp. It has an SES (E14) fitting and a maximum power rating of 25 watts. You will therefore need to purchase a suitable E14 bulb separately.

Common fittings include:

  • E14 bulb: a slim screw fitting, often used in smaller table lamps, wall lamps and decorative light fittings;
  • E27 bulb: a larger standard fitting for pendant lamps, ceiling lamps and more;
  • G9 bulb: a compact push-fit fitting often found in ceiling lamps and chandeliers.

As well as checking the fitting, check the maximum wattage. The right size does not automatically mean that every light source can be used safely.

3. Failing to check dimmability fully

“Dimmable” may refer to the lamp, the light source or the combination of the two with an external dimmer. The product information for the Brilliant Jesper pendant lamp states that it can be dimmed externally with a suitable light source and dimmer. The lamp itself therefore does not have a built-in dimming function.

When choosing dimmable lighting, check:

  1. whether the light fitting is dimmable;
  2. whether the chosen LED bulb is dimmable;
  3. whether the dimmer is compatible with LED;
  4. whether installation is carried out according to the instructions.

An integrated LED floor lamp works differently. The Brilliant Bow LED Arc Lamp has a built-in light source, a touch dimmer and an adjustable colour temperature from 3000 to 6500 K. According to the product information, the LED module is not replaceable; if the light source fails, the entire lamp must be replaced.

Important specifications to consider before buying

Dimensions and light distribution

Measure the available space before ordering. In a living room, a floor lamp, arc lamp or ceiling lamp is often suitable as general lighting. A table lamp is better suited to providing additional light on a sideboard, desk or side table.

For a pendant lamp above the dining table, pay attention to the diameter and adjustable height. The Brilliant Jesper has a 47 cm glass shade and a cable that can be shortened. This makes it easier to position above a table or in a hallway, but the installation must be suitable for the available ceiling space.

Materials and maintenance

The material affects both the appearance and the maintenance required:

  • Glass lamp: often spreads light visibly around the room, but needs regular dusting;
  • Metal lamp: suits modern or industrial interiors and is usually easy to clean with a dry cloth;
  • Bamboo lamp: creates a warm lighting effect through its woven shade; do not place it in a damp environment;
  • Gold lamp: can create an accent alongside dark wood, neutral walls or warm colours.

The Atmosphera Lio Wall Lamp combines a steel base with natural, FSC-certified bamboo. The spotlight is adjustable and, according to the product information, the lamp can also be used as a ceiling lamp. Installation takes approximately ten minutes.

IP rating and installation

For most decorative indoor lighting, IP20 is sufficient for dry indoor spaces. IP20 does not mean that the lamp is resistant to splashing water. Do not therefore use such light fittings in damp rooms or anywhere they may come into contact with water.

When installing a ceiling lamp, chandelier or pendant lamp, switch off the power before beginning installation. The Brilliant Jesper product information recommends installation by a qualified electrician and use in accordance with local regulations. Also check that the included fixing materials are suitable for your type of ceiling.

Frequently asked questions about indoor lighting

Which fitting do I need for my lamp?

Check the product label or the product specifications. An E14 bulb has a slim screw fitting, an E27 bulb has a larger screw fitting and a G9 bulb has a compact push-fit fitting. Also check the maximum wattage and the dimensions of the light source.

How long does LED indoor lighting last?

Lifespan varies depending on the model, usage and heat dissipation. With integrated LED lighting, the light source may not be replaceable. Before buying, check whether the lamp uses a replaceable bulb or whether the LED module is permanently built into the fitting.

How much does a lamp cost to run?

Energy use mainly depends on the wattage and the number of hours the lamp is switched on. An LED bulb with a lower wattage generally uses less electricity than a light source with a higher wattage. Compare the wattage, light output in lumens and energy class. This allows you to assess running costs based on verifiable information rather than the product name alone.
