Buying ice lollies: how to choose water ice, ice cream and multipacks without a disappointing purchase

A freezer full of ice lollies sounds simple, but when shopping online, the differences between packs and brand names can quickly become difficult to spot. A large multipack is not automatically better value. A product with fruit on the packaging does not always contain much fruit. And “sugar-free” does not mean that an ice lolly contains no sweeteners or other points to consider.

With these checks, you can make a more informed choice between water ice lollies, ice cream, ice lollies, ice cream bars and cones. That way, you can buy a pack that suits your household, taste and occasion.

Three common pitfalls when buying ice lollies

1. Looking only at the number of pieces

A pack containing twelve ice lollies may look appealing, but also check the amount per piece. A 50 ml Festini ice lolly is smaller than a 90 ml Cornetto. So, compare not only the price per pack, but also the price per ice lolly and, where possible, the price per 100 ml.

2. Confusing pictures of fruit with the actual fruit content

For fruit ice lollies, the percentage of fruit is more important than a large picture of strawberries or pears. According to the product information, OLA Festini Strawberry contains 15% strawberry purée. Festini Pear contains 20% pear purée. This tells you something about the ingredients, but not automatically about the intensity of the flavour or the nutritional value.

You should also read claims such as “with vitamin C” in context. Festini lists 25 mg of vitamin C per ice lolly. This is product information, not general health advice.

3. Overlooking allergens and storage requirements

Ice cream, chocolate ice cream and cones often contain milk, lactose, gluten, soya or nuts. Cornetto Classico contains, among other ingredients, hazelnuts, wheat, egg and milk. According to the packaging, Cornetto Max Pistachio contains pistachios and may contain other nuts.

Also check that your freezer is set to approximately -18 °C. Most of the products mentioned should be stored at this temperature. As a general rule, thawed products should not be refrozen. Always check the current information on the label of the pack you receive.

Important specifications to compare

Water ice, fruit ice or ice cream?

Water ice lollies consist mainly of water, sugar, fruit juice or fruit purée and stabilisers. They are often smaller and generally contain little fat. Examples include OLA Festini Strawberry, Festini Pear and OLA Split. Split combines orange water ice with vanilla-flavoured ice cream and, according to the product information, contains 65 kcal per lolly.

Ice cream contains milk, cream or milk powder as important ingredients. This gives it a noticeably different texture from fruit ice. Mars Ice Cream Bars Chocolate Caramel combine ice cream with caramel and a cocoa coating. Magnum products also focus on a creamy texture, with chocolate coating, nuts, caramel or a fruity filling.

Amount per piece and total weight

Pay attention to the combination of millilitres, grams and the number of pieces:

  • OLA Festini Strawberry: 12 x 50 ml
  • OLA Ice Cream Split: 9 x 67 ml
  • OLA Cornetto Classico: 6 x 90 ml
  • Magnum Signature La Pistache: 3 x 90 ml
  • Melona Mango: 8 x 70 ml

Millilitres indicate volume, while grams indicate weight. Because ice cream can contain air, these figures may differ. Therefore, only use the nutritional values per 100 grams or per 100 ml to compare products labelled in the same way.

Sugar, sweeteners and nutritional values

If you are looking for less sugar, you can consider sugar-free ice lollies, but always read the full ingredients list. According to the product information, Candyman Freezing Lollies Sugar Free contains maltitol and sucralose. So, a product can still contain sweeteners. Also check the warnings on the packaging, as sweeteners such as maltitol can have a laxative effect for some people.

The nutritional values listed on the various product pages are not always presented in exactly the same way. If in doubt, the physical label takes precedence. So, do not use terms such as “light”, “sugar-free” or “with fruit” as your only selection criterion.

Frequently asked questions about ice lollies

How long do ice lollies keep in the freezer?

The best-before date is shown on the packaging and applies as long as the product has been kept continuously frozen. A constant temperature of -18 °C helps maintain quality. Do not store a box in a warm freezer for an extended period or next to products that are frequently thawed.

Are fruit ice lollies always a lighter choice than ice cream?

It depends on the product. Fruit ice often contains less fat, but it can still contain sugar or syrup. Therefore, compare the nutritional value per 100 grams and the portion size. A small water ice lolly may contain less energy than a large ice cream, but the ingredients remain the deciding factor.

What offers better value: individual ice lollies or ice cream in a multipack?

A multipack is often practical for families, but calculate the price per piece and per 100 ml. A box containing more ice lollies may contain smaller portions. Also consider the flavours: a lower price is no help if several varieties remain uneaten in the freezer.
