Choosing a garden swing bench: what to consider before you order

A garden swing bench may seem easy to choose: find a model you like the look of, check the price and place your order. In practice, the dimensions, suspension and included accessories are what determine how comfortable it is to use. An attractive image showing cushions or a canopy does not always mean these items are included.

These are the main pitfalls to watch out for when choosing one for a Dutch garden, patio or veranda:

  • Unclear what’s included: some models don’t come with a frame, suspension chains or a stand. Check whether you’re buying the seat only.
  • Not checking the weight capacity: a wide garden bench isn’t necessarily suitable for several people. Check the maximum weight per seat or for the whole structure.
  • No plan for rain or storage: cushions, fabric and wooden parts need protection when they’re not in use. A water-repellent cover or dry storage space can help extend their lifespan.
  • Misjudging the dimensions: consider not only the seat width but also the space needed for the swing to move and the height of any stand.

Which specifications matter?

1. Weight capacity and seating capacity

Check whether the weight capacity applies per seat or to the whole piece of furniture. For example, a vidaXL poly-rattan swing bench lists a capacity of 110 kg per seat. A freestanding Terrabeta swing chair with stand lists a maximum load of 120 kg. Larger models may have different specifications: a Terrabeta 3-seat swing lists 120 kg per seat.

Treat these figures as maximum limits and allow for movement while swinging. Always place a freestanding model on a flat, stable surface.

2. Material and maintenance

A range of materials are used for outdoor furniture:

  • PE rattan or poly-rattan: a woven synthetic material described in the product information as lightweight, low-maintenance and suitable for outdoor use. Clean it with a soft cloth and check the metal frame regularly.
  • Powder-coated steel: used for frames and stands. Check the coating for damage over time, particularly around the joints and legs.
  • Solid acacia wood: offers a natural look. The models described have an oil finish. Wood usually needs more care than synthetic materials, including cleaning and re-treatment in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Textilene, polyester and olefin: used for seats, cushions and canopies. Check whether the covers are removable and, where possible, store cushions somewhere dry during heavy rain.

When a brand describes a product as weather-resistant or UV-resistant, this is information from the product description. Its actual lifespan also depends on where it is placed, how it is used and cleaned, and how well it is protected.

3. Dimensions and suspension

Measure the available space before buying an outdoor hanging bench or garden swing bench. Check:

  1. The width and depth of the seat.
  2. The total height, including suspension rings, stand or canopy.
  3. The clearance needed in front of and behind the swing.
  4. Whether you need a suspension point, sturdy beam or separate stand.

The vidaXL Swing Bench, measuring 109 × 62 × 40 cm, has fixing rings, but the product information states that a frame and suspension chains are not included. This type is suitable if you already have a suitable supporting structure. If you don’t have a fixed suspension point, consider a hanging chair with stand or a complete freestanding swing chair instead.

Do you need a cushion, canopy or stand?

A swing bench with cushion is more comfortable straight away, but check whether the cushion is removable and washable. With outdoor furniture, it’s a good idea to bring textiles indoors during prolonged rain.

A swing bench with canopy can provide shade. Terrabeta’s product description states that the canopy offers UV protection; this is a manufacturer’s claim and doesn’t guarantee that you can sit in the sun for unlimited periods. A canopy also doesn’t remove the need to protect the furniture in windy or bad weather.

For a balcony or small garden, a garden swing chair is often easier to place than a wide bench. According to the product specifications, an egg-shaped Terrabeta hanging chair with stand has a basket measuring 89 × 60 × 110 cm, a base measuring 97 × 97 cm and a maximum load of 120 kg. Consider the load on your flooring and make sure the legs are stable.

A children’s swing set is a separate product category. Use one only in accordance with the age and safety instructions. The Lifetime Kids Swing Set specifies, among other things, a minimum age of 3 years, adult supervision and a freestanding structure that doesn’t require cement.

Frequently asked questions about garden swing benches

Can I hang a swing bench from a tree?

Only if the tree, branch and fixings are demonstrably suitable for the load and movement. Also check whether the product includes fixing rings, chains or a frame. Some benches are supplied with the seat and rings only.

How do I maintain a swing bench outdoors?

Use a soft cloth, remove dirt regularly and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. Store cushions during heavy rain and cover the furniture with a water-repellent cover when it won’t be used for a while. Wood may need additional treatment.

What does it cost to use a swing bench?

A swing bench doesn’t use electricity. The ongoing costs are mainly for maintenance, a protective cover if needed, and replacing or buying extra cushions. If you choose a model with a stand, you’ll also need to allow for enough space and a stable surface.
