Buying fruit sweets: how to choose fruit-flavoured sweets for your occasion

Fruit sweets come in many forms, from soft fruit gums and sour sweets to toffees, lollies and fruit-flavoured confectionery. Fruity soft drinks and fruit-flavoured fizzy drinks are also included in the same purchase by many shoppers. However, an image of strawberries, cherries or mangoes does not always indicate how much fruit the product actually contains.

When buying fruit sweets online, shoppers mainly face three pitfalls:

  • Fruit flavour is confused with fruit juice. A sweet or drink may contain a natural flavouring without containing much fruit.
  • “Free from certain ingredients” is interpreted too broadly. Gluten-free sweets are not automatically vegan sweets. Gelatine, beeswax, milk or nuts may still be present.
  • The packaging appears better value than it is. A multipack can be convenient for party sweets, but always check the total weight, number of items and serving size.

What should you look for in fruit sweets?

1. Check the ingredients and allergens

Start by reading the ingredients list for fruity sweets. Look out for terms such as gelatine, milk, gluten, nuts and beeswax. According to the product information, Red Band Dropfruit Duos contains gelatine and beeswax, but is described as gluten-free. This means it is not suitable for someone looking for vegan sweets.

According to the product description, Fruitella Berries and Cherry Toffees is offered as vegan and contains fruit juices from raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and cherries, among others. Always check the packaging on delivery: the current labelling takes precedence.

An allergen statement such as “contains none of the 14 major EU allergens” provides useful practical information, but it does not replace a personal assessment in the case of a severe allergy. If in doubt, it is better not to serve the product.

2. Look at the fruit content, flavourings and nutritional values

A fruit-flavoured product is not the same as a product with a high fruit content. So compare:

  • the stated percentage of fruit juice or fruit purée;
  • natural or artificial flavourings;
  • the sugar content per 100 grams or 100 millilitres;
  • the serving size;
  • any sweeteners, acids and colourings.

For example, Red Band Dropfruit Duos lists 54 grams of sugar per 100 grams. The combination of liquorice and fruit flavours may appeal to fans of sweet and savoury tastes, but the nutritional information makes it clear that this is confectionery, not a substitute for fruit.

The same applies to drinks. According to the product information, Fanta Strawberry Kiwi contains 42 kcal and 10.2 grams of sugar per 100 millilitres. Oasis Apple Pear lists 36 kcal and 8.4 grams of sugar per 100 millilitres. Figures like these make it easier to plan larger packs for a party.

3. Match the texture, size and packaging to how you will use them

Soft sweets are easy to share, while sour sweets have a more distinctive flavour profile. Individually wrapped toffees are practical for party treats or a sweet jar. A resealable bag is more convenient when you want to have several small portions.

For a children’s party, loose lollies or individually wrapped sweets are easy to organise. For a pick ’n’ mix display, a multipack with different textures may be more appealing. For young children, pay attention to the shape and hardness of the sweets. According to some brands’ product information, young children should eat sweets under supervision.

Store sweets and drinks in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Fizzy drinks should be refrigerated after opening and used within the period stated on the packaging. For international products, take extra care to check the best-before date and the Dutch-language product information.

Frequently asked questions about fruit sweets

What is the difference between fruit confectionery and fruit sweets?

Fruit confectionery is a broad search term for sweets with a fruity flavour, colour or filling. Fruit sweets may refer to individual sweets, fruit gums, toffees and lollies. So always check the ingredients and fruit content rather than relying solely on the product name.

Are fruit sweets automatically vegan or gluten-free?

No. Gluten-free sweets may contain gelatine and therefore not be vegan. Conversely, vegan sweets may contain ingredients that you still need to check on the label. Look at the allergen information and check the packaging when it arrives.

How should I store fruity sweets and fruity soft drinks?

Store sweets in a sealed pack in a cool, dry place away from heat and sunlight. Unopened soft drinks should also be kept cool and out of direct sunlight. After opening, the drink should be refrigerated; follow the usage and best-before information on the label.
