Choosing frozen chicken products: how to find the right crispy chicken for every meal

A bag of frozen chicken products may seem simple to choose, until you have to compare chicken nuggets, chicken pieces, karaage, Korean fried chicken, chicken tempura and chicken schnitzel. Packaging often focuses on a crispy coating, quick preparation or a large family pack. However, these terms do not tell you everything about the ingredients, portion size and cooking method.

With this practical guide, you can focus on what the label actually says. That way, you can avoid a disappointing purchase and choose more purposefully for a quick chicken meal, snack, party food or air-fryer preparation.

Three common pitfalls when buying frozen chicken

1. A large pack is not automatically better value

A family pack can be convenient for a household, but always check the net weight, number of portions and amount of chicken per 100 grams. A product with a thick layer of batter or sauce may contain less chicken than you would expect from its name.

So do not compare only the price per pack. Work out the price per kilogram and check the percentage of chicken in the ingredients list.

2. “Crispy” says nothing about your cooking method

A product may be suitable for the oven, deep-fat fryer and air fryer, but the result varies depending on the appliance. Hot air circulates less effectively in an overcrowded air fryer. As a result, the coating may not crisp evenly.

Pay attention to:

  • the recommended temperature;
  • the cooking time;
  • whether the product must be cooked from frozen;
  • whether you need to turn the chicken halfway through;
  • how much can fit in your appliance at one time.

Always follow the instructions on the current packaging. Product specifications on a web page may change.

3. Flavour claims can hide extra sugar, salt or allergens

Sauces such as sweet spicy or sweet garlic deliver a distinctive flavour, but they also add carbohydrates and sugars. For example, Rengi Korean Fried Chicken Sweet Spicy lists 12 grams of sugar per 100 grams. The sweet garlic variety contains 9 grams per 100 grams.

Also check the allergens. Many breaded chicken products contain wheat or gluten. Karaage and Korean fried chicken may also contain soya and sometimes barley. If you are looking for halal chicken products, check both the halal statement and the full packaging before cooking the product.

Which specifications should you check?

Percentage and type of chicken

Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight. If chicken is the first ingredient, it makes up the largest proportion. The percentage of chicken makes comparisons more specific:

  • Qualiko Tempura Chicken Bites lists 69% chicken breast inner fillet;
  • Roosterz&Co Chicken Goujon South Baked lists 66% chicken fillet;
  • Emperor’s Choice Chicken Karaage lists 60% chicken leg meat;
  • Roosterz&Co Breaded Schnitzel lists 54% chicken fillet.

A higher percentage of chicken does not automatically mean you will prefer the flavour, but it does help you compare products more objectively.

Breading, batter and sauce

Chicken tempura usually has a lighter, airy coating. Chicken schnitzel often has a thicker breadcrumb coating. Chicken karaage generally consists of smaller pieces with a seasoned coating. Korean fried chicken may already come with sauce, so you do not need a separate dip.

Focus particularly on the ratio of chicken to breadcrumbs or batter and sauce. Also check whether the sauce is supplied separately or already coating the chicken. This affects not only the flavour, but also how crispy the finished result stays.

Nutritional values and allergens

Use the values per 100 grams for comparison. As a guide, Qualiko Tempura Chicken Bites lists 198 kcal, 9 grams of fat, 18.6 grams of protein and 1.2 grams of salt per 100 grams. Emperor’s Choice Chicken Karaage lists 223 kcal, 12 grams of fat, 13 grams of protein and 1 gram of salt per 100 grams.

These values are not a judgement on a product. They can, however, help you make a choice that suits your meal and portion size. If you have allergies, always check the label. “May contain” means that cross-contamination is possible.

Cooking frozen chicken in the air fryer

For air-fryer chicken, preheat the appliance according to the packaging instructions, arrange the pieces separately and check that the centre is fully cooked and piping hot. A product such as Ajinomoto Crispy Fried Chicken Nuggets gives 180 °C for 8 to 10 minutes as a guideline, with turning halfway through recommended.

When trying a new product, always start by following its own cooking instructions. Smaller chicken pieces cook more quickly than a thick chicken schnitzel. Do not leave the air fryer running for longer than necessary, and cook several batches one after another if the basket is small.

Store frozen chicken at the stated temperature, usually at -18 °C or below. Once thawed, the product must be kept chilled and used within the stated period. Do not refreeze it.

Frequently asked questions about frozen chicken products

Are frozen chicken products suitable for the air fryer?

Many chicken nuggets, chicken tempura, chicken tenders and chicken karaage products are suitable for the air fryer. Check the packaging for the temperature and cooking time. Do not stack the products, so that hot air can circulate around them.

How can I stop crispy chicken from going soggy?

Cook the chicken in a preheated appliance, keep the pieces separate and serve them immediately. With Korean fried chicken, the sauce may soften the coating over time. You can serve an extra dip separately if you wish.

How long can you keep frozen chicken?

Keep the product unopened and continuously frozen at the temperature stated on the packaging. Always check the best-before date shown. After thawing, keep the chicken chilled, use it promptly and do not refreeze it.
