Choosing a folding trolley: how to avoid buying the wrong one

A folding trolley can be useful for shopping, camping equipment, gardening supplies, moving boxes or heavy parcels. However, many models look similar while differing considerably in use. A spacious folding wagon is not automatically suitable for stairs, and a lightweight folding hand truck is not designed for every type of load.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • A high load capacity without practical stability: a maximum load rating means little if the base is small or the load can easily shift.
  • Wheels that are unsuitable for the surface: small wheels work well on a flat shop floor, but are less suitable for thresholds, grass or uneven paths.
  • Folding down compactly without checking the folded dimensions: some trolleys have a large frame and therefore do not fit in every shed, boot or hallway cupboard.

Which specifications are important?

1. Load capacity and weight distribution

Check the maximum load in kilograms and also look at the dimensions of the loading platform or bag. A heavy-duty trolley with a load capacity of 150 or 200 kg requires the load to be distributed evenly. Place heavy items as low as possible and prevent boxes from sticking out above the edge.

A stated load capacity is not an invitation to load the trolley to its maximum on a slope. Always follow the manufacturer's safety instructions. Whenever possible, use the trolley on a stable, level surface and only use the brakes for parking if this is specified.

2. Wheel type and manoeuvrability

A wheeled trolley can have two, four or six wheels. Swivel castors make turning easier, while fixed wheels often provide greater directional stability. Wide tyres are practical on grass, gravel or a campsite. A shopping trolley with stair-climbing wheels is primarily designed for pulling a loaded bag over stair treads; this does not mean that every staircase can be used without effort or risk.

Pay attention to:

  • wheel size and width;
  • material, such as rubber, PVC, PU or TPR;
  • braking function;
  • turning circle;
  • use on flat or uneven surfaces.

3. Capacity, frame and storage size

A folding wagon with a capacity of 127 litres is suitable for plenty of camping equipment, while a 30-litre folding shopping trolley makes more sense for everyday shopping. A large capacity is only useful if the trolley can still fit through doors, lifts and narrow garden paths.

Also check the frame and fabric. 600D Oxford fabric is often used for transport bags and wagon covers. Aluminium keeps the weight down, while steel generally results in a heavier frame. Also check whether assembly is required and how the product should be cleaned and stored.

Frequently asked questions about folding trolleys

How long does a folding trolley last?

Its lifespan depends on the load, surface, moisture and maintenance. Clean the frame and wheels after use, and only fold a fabric wagon away once the cover is dry. Regularly check the hinges, tyres, brakes and attachment points. Do not exceed the stated load capacity.

Can I keep a folding trolley in the car?

This depends on its folded dimensions. In addition to length and width, check the height and weight. A 3.5 kg hand truck with a folded width of 5.7 cm will generally take up less space than a large camping wagon, but the exact dimensions remain the deciding factor.

What is the difference between a trolley and a furniture dolly?

A trolley or folding wagon usually has a bag or open loading area and is suitable for several separate items. A furniture dolly often consists of a low platform with swivel castors. It is useful underneath furniture or appliances, such as when moving a cupboard or washing machine, but is less suitable for transporting shopping or loose camping equipment.
