A folding shopping trolley is useful for shopping, market visits, laundry and days out. However, a trolley can look sturdier and more spacious in a product photo than it is in everyday use. If you live in a flat, travel over pavements and cycle paths, or regularly carry heavy shopping, look beyond the price and stated capacity.
A large bag doesn’t automatically mean the frame is suitable for heavy shopping. Check each of the following separately:
For example, a 60-litre shopping trolley may be suitable for a large weekly shop, but you’ll need to distribute the load evenly. A spacious 170- or 200-litre camping wagon, on the other hand, is less practical in a narrow supermarket aisle.
A shopping trolley with stair-climbing wheels usually has three wheels on each side. They rotate over the edge of each step. This can help with kerbs and stairs, but the weight is still there. On a narrow or steep staircase, move the trolley slowly and keep a firm hold of it.
Check the wheel material, axle construction and maximum load. Brand product descriptions may promise comfortable operation, but don’t assume this will be the case on every surface or for every user.
Check the dimensions when folded, not just when the trolley is in use. If it needs to fit behind a door, under a bed or in a car boot, it should have a flat-folding mechanism. Also check whether the wheels can be removed and whether the bag can be taken off for cleaning.
For everyday shopping, a capacity of around 25 to 45 litres is often manageable. A 60-litre shopping trolley is better suited to larger shopping trips or days out. Wagon models with a capacity of 170 litres or more are suitable for camping, the beach and the garden, but they’re bigger and heavier.
Treat the stated maximum load as an upper limit. A trolley with a 20 kg handcart capacity isn’t the same as a model with a 60 kg load capacity. Put heavy items at the bottom and secure loose boxes or crates with a tensioning or fastening strap.
An aluminium frame can help keep the overall weight down. Steel often offers a different balance of strength and weight. Also look for:
Water-repellent doesn’t automatically mean waterproof. A cover flap is useful in wet weather, but it’s best to wrap delicate shopping separately.
Two large wheels are often sufficient for shops and smooth pavements. Larger PU or EVA wheels, or specialist tri-wheels, can be more practical on cobbles, over thresholds and on stairs. A shopping trolley with wheels should remain stable even when the bag is only half full. Check whether the model can stand on its own and whether the handle is at a comfortable height.

A capacity of 25 litres may be enough for a small daily shop. For a family shop, 38 to 60 litres is a more suitable size. Choose a larger wagon only if you’ll also be carrying camping gear, garden equipment or bulky crates.
Wipe the frame and wheels with a damp cloth. Let the bag and frame dry completely before folding the trolley. Regularly check the wheel attachments, folding mechanism and any fastening straps.
It depends on how you plan to use it. A 2-in-1 model usually converts from a shopping bag into a handcart. A 3-in-1 model often adds a shoulder bag or cool bag. These extra features are especially useful if you’ll also use the trolley for parcels, picnics or camping.
