A foldable shopping trolley may seem simple at first glance: a bag, a handle and a pair of wheels. However, models vary considerably in load capacity, stability and ease of use. A trolley that rolls smoothly around the supermarket can become awkward on pavements, stairs or uneven cycle paths.
For older people, students, city dwellers and families, the choice is therefore not just about capacity. Pay particular attention to the trolley’s own weight, how much weight its construction can carry and how compactly it can be stored.
A capacity of, for example, 60 litres tells you how much space there is in the bag, but not automatically how much weight it can carry. Heavy shopping such as bottles, jars and pet food puts much more strain on the frame and wheels than lightweight packaging.
Always check the following separately:
A product with a large bag is therefore not necessarily suitable for carrying heavy shopping.
Some trolleys only fold the bag, while the frame still takes up a relatively large amount of space. Measure the available space in advance, whether in a hallway cupboard, storage room or boot. Also look out for protruding wheels, a fixed handle and any parts that need to be removed.
A lightweight shopping trolley weighing around 1 to 2 kilograms is easier to lift, but often has a lower load capacity than a 3 to 4-kilogram aluminium trolley.
A stair-climbing trolley with several wheels may be designed to make it easier to cross steps and uneven ground. That does not mean every staircase will be safe or comfortable. On a narrow staircase, the wheels may hit the wall, and a heavy load still requires good control.
Use the trolley calmly on stairs, keep the load secured and do not exceed the stated load capacity. On flat routes, two larger wheels can sometimes be easier to manoeuvre.
For a normal supermarket trip, 25 to 30 litres may be sufficient. If you do several days’ worth of shopping at once, you may benefit more from a high-capacity trolley of 56 to 60 litres. For camping, sports equipment or large parcels, transport carts of 80 litres or more are more practical.
As well as the volume, consider the construction:
A shopping trolley with wheels should not only be able to travel in a straight line. Consider the turning circle, the distance between the wheels and the stability when the bag is half full. Castor wheels are useful on a wide transport cart, while larger fixed wheels are often better suited to a classic shopping trolley.
For everyday use in a block of flats or apartment, it is also sensible to consider the weight when carrying it up stairs. A heavy, high-capacity model may roll comfortably outdoors, but be difficult to load into the car or carry to an upper floor.
A shopping trolley with a cool bag has an insulated compartment for items such as chilled shopping or drinks. Check the dimensions of this compartment and bear in mind that its insulation only lasts for a limited time. A cool bag is not a substitute for active cooling.
A 2-in-1 shopping trolley can allow the shopping bag to be detached so that the frame can be used as a sack truck. A 3-in-1 trolley may add a shoulder bag or hand truck function, for example. These features are useful if you want to use the trolley for parcels, picnics or camping too, but additional parts can affect the weight and storage space required.

Wipe the frame, wheels and exterior with a slightly damp cloth. Allow the bag to dry completely before folding it away. Always check the care instructions for fabric parts; some bags are not machine washable.
Its lifespan depends on the load, the surface it is used on and how well it is maintained. Overloading can put extra strain on the wheels, seams and frame, causing them to wear out more quickly. Regularly check that the screws, wheel fittings and fasteners are still secure.
A standard trolley does not require electricity or consumables. Any additional costs mainly result from wear and tear to the wheels or fittings. If you use it extensively on cobbles and over kerbs, it is a good idea to check these parts periodically.
