Buying an electric table grill: how to choose the right model for your home

An electric table grill is ideal for quick meals, indoor barbecues and sociable meals at the table. However, many models look similar even though they can differ considerably in use. A compact contact grill works differently from a spacious plancha grill, while a grill with automatic programmes requires a different approach from a basic grill plate.

Most disappointing purchases result from three common pitfalls:

  • Confusing high power with a large grilling surface. A high wattage does not automatically mean you can cook for several people.
  • Treating “healthy” or “low-smoke” as guaranteed results. According to a brand’s own research, features such as fat drainage or smoke reduction may produce certain results, but the outcome also depends on the ingredients, temperature and cleaning.
  • Not checking how easy the grill is to clean. A grill with a non-stick coating is not automatically easy to clean if the plate cannot be removed or fat collects around the heating element.

Which specifications should you check?

1. Grilling surface and shape

Do not just look at the external dimensions. Pay particular attention to the usable grilling surface. For one or two people, a plate measuring around 22.5 × 14 cm may be sufficient. For a family or a barbecue at the table, a surface area of 1,250 to 1,500 cm² is more practical. An extra-long teppanyaki grill is suitable when several people want to grill at the table at the same time.

A ridged plate creates grill marks and is useful for meat and vegetables. A smooth plate works better for fish, eggs, pancakes and small ingredients. A model with both surfaces offers more versatility than a contact grill with one fixed plate type.

2. Power and temperature control

The models in this overview range from 800 to 2,400 watts. Higher power can help the grill reach temperature quickly, but you should also check whether the temperature can be adjusted.

  • Fixed temperature: simple to use, but less flexible.
  • Several settings: suitable for different types of food.
  • Variable control: gives you more control when cooking fish, vegetables and thicker cuts of meat, for example.
  • Automatic programmes: convenient if you do not want to adjust many settings, but check which programmes are actually available.

An electric barbecue with hinged plates can be used both as a contact grill and as a table barbecue. Bear in mind that an open grill takes up more space and may cause fat splashes.

3. Plates, coating and maintenance

Check whether the plates are removable and whether the instructions say they are dishwasher-safe. Do not use metal utensils on a grill with a non-stick coating. Wooden, nylon or silicone utensils help prevent scratches.

A drip tray makes emptying the grill easier. However, it needs to be emptied regularly to prevent it from overflowing and to avoid built-up grease. Ventilation is important when using a grill indoors, even when a brand claims that it produces little smoke. According to George Foreman’s own research, the 28000-56 model offers a specific reduction in smoke and odour. This is a brand claim, not a guarantee of a completely smoke-free kitchen.

Practical tips for use and energy costs

Place an indoor grill on a level, heat-resistant surface with plenty of space around it. Before buying, check that the cord is long enough for your table and that the plates lock securely into place. A model with a large plate may use more electricity per session, but it could be more efficient when preparing several portions at once.

You can calculate energy consumption easily using:

power in kilowatts × operating time in hours = consumption in kilowatt-hours

A 2,000-watt grill that heats at full power for 15 minutes theoretically uses 0.5 kWh. In practice, the thermostat regularly reduces the power. Actual consumption therefore depends on preheating, temperature and cooking time.

Never use charcoal in an electric barbecue that has not been designed for it. A charcoal table barbecue, such as the Alpina, is a different type of product and should only be used outdoors and in accordance with the safety instructions.

Frequently asked questions about electric table grills

Can I use an electric table grill indoors?

Yes, models designed for indoor use can be used inside on a stable, heat-resistant surface. Make sure the room is well ventilated and keep curtains, paper and other flammable materials away from the grill. “Low-smoke” does not mean that no smoke will be produced in all circumstances.

How long does an electric table grill last?

Its lifespan depends on how it is used, cleaned and how the coating is treated. Allow the appliance to cool completely before removing the plates, and do not use metal utensils on a non-stick coating. Also check the warranty and information about replacement parts. Some brands, such as Tefal, mention repair or spare-parts programmes; check the terms for the specific model.

Are removable plates worth the extra cost?

They can be, particularly if you grill regularly. Removable plates make cleaning easier and help you remove grease more thoroughly. However, check whether they are genuinely dishwasher-safe and whether replacement plates are available. For occasional use, a basic grill plate with a separate drip tray may be sufficient.
