Choosing an electric table grill: how to avoid a poor purchase for indoor and outdoor use

An electric table grill is ideal for a balcony, patio, kitchen or small garden. You do not need charcoal, a gas bottle or a permanent outdoor kitchen. However, many models look similar, while the differences in grilling surface, temperature control and cleaning can be considerable.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • A high wattage does not automatically mean even grilling. The construction of the plate and the temperature control also determine how useful the grill is.
  • A “large” grill plate may offer little usable cooking space in practice. So check the dimensions of the actual grilling surface, not just those of the appliance.
  • A non-stick coating does not mean that everything is dishwasher-safe. With some models, only the drip tray or removable plates can go in the dishwasher.

Which specifications are important?

1. Grilling surface and number of people

For one or two people, a compact indoor grill is sufficient. For a family or a group, a wide table barbecue is more practical. Check the dimensions in centimetres or square centimetres.

A grilling surface of around 40 × 36 cm provides considerably more space than a small contact grill model. An extra-long teppanyaki plate may be useful when several people want to cook at the same time. Do bear in mind how much space is available on your table or balcony.

Also check:

  • Whether the stated surface area is fully usable.
  • Whether a rim, lid or fat channel takes up space.
  • Whether you can easily move and store the appliance.
  • Whether the cord is long enough to reach your socket.

2. Temperature control and wattage

An adjustable-temperature table grill gives you more control than a model with just an on/off switch. A low setting is useful for vegetables, fish or bread, while a higher setting is better for meat and dishes that need to be seared quickly.

Power is expressed in watts. The models in this selection range from 1,500 to 2,300 watts. Higher wattage can help heat a large surface, but also check that your socket and any extension lead are suitable. Preferably use an earthed socket and avoid using a lightweight extension lead with a powerful appliance.

A continuously adjustable thermostat offers finer control than five fixed settings. Fixed settings are, however, simple and easy to understand for everyday use.

3. Plate, coating and fat collection

A table grill with a non-stick coating generally requires less oil and is easier to clean. Do not use metal spatulas or abrasive scourers if the manufacturer advises against them. A damaged coating can make the grill less pleasant to use.

A grill with a fat collection tray drains melted fat and moisture away from the grilling surface. This helps to reduce mess, but it does not automatically make a grill smoke-free. Fat that lands on a hot element can still cause smoke. Empty the collection tray after use and allow the appliance to cool completely before removing any parts.

Also consider the material. Cast aluminium can distribute heat effectively, while a ceramic or other non-stick coating may make maintenance easier. Always check which parts are removable and dishwasher-safe.

Indoors, on a balcony or on a patio: which grill suits your situation?

An electric BBQ is generally suitable for outdoor use if the product states this. Place the appliance on a flat, stable and heat-resistant surface. Protect a balcony or patio grill from rain and moisture, and do not use it directly beneath flammable materials such as a parasol edge, curtain or wooden canopy.

For indoor use, ventilation and distance from walls are important. Check the instructions before using a model as an indoor grill. A grill with a lid can be practical, but the exterior and lid will become hot. Keep children at a safe distance and do not leave the appliance switched on unattended.

Frequently asked questions about electric table grills

Can I use an electric table grill indoors?

That depends on the product instructions. Only use a model indoors if the manufacturer permits it. Ensure there is adequate ventilation, keep it away from flammable materials and place the grill on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Even electric grilling can produce smoke from fat and food residues.

How much electricity does an electric BBQ use?

The maximum power is shown on the product label, for example 2,000 or 2,300 watts. Actual consumption depends on the heating time, temperature and duration of use. An appliance rated at 2,000 watts that operates continuously at full power for half an hour theoretically uses around 1 kWh. In practice, the thermostat switches on and off regularly, so consumption may vary.

How long does an electric table grill last?

Its lifespan depends on use, storage and maintenance. Clean the grill plate and fat collection tray once they have cooled, use suitable kitchen utensils and store an outdoor model in a dry place. Before buying, also check the warranty and the availability of replacement parts. A statutory minimum two-year guarantee applies within the EU, in addition to any further rights under national law.
