Choosing earbuds and headphones: how to avoid making the wrong purchase

When looking for earbuds and headphones, you quickly come across terms such as deep bass, studio audio, spatial sound and noise cancellation. These descriptions do not always tell you how a product performs in everyday life. The requirements for making calls on the train are different from those for exercising, working from home or gaming.

That is why choosing the right product starts not with the brand, but with the connection, wearing style, microphone, battery and protection against moisture.

Three common pitfalls

1. Choosing a connection that is not compatible with your devices

More and more smartphones, tablets and laptops use USB-C. An older model with a 3.5mm connection will not work without an adapter. So check whether your device supports USB-C audio. With wired USB-C earbuds, Bluetooth is not required and you do not need to charge a battery.

Wireless models work via Bluetooth. Check the Bluetooth version, compatibility and range. Bluetooth headphones can be convenient when travelling, but they need to be charged regularly.

2. Confusing noise cancellation with complete silence

Noise cancellation can reduce background noise, but how well it works varies by model and situation. Passive isolation mainly comes from the fit of the earbuds or the cushions of a pair of headphones. Active noise cancellation uses electronics to reduce background noise.

According to Apple’s own information, the AirPods Max feature active noise cancellation and a Transparency mode. This does not mean that every sound disappears. When travelling, cycling or taking part in other activities where you need to stay alert, caution is required.

3. Focusing only on sound claims

A wide frequency range or terms such as “Hi-Fi” do not tell you everything about your listening experience. The fit, seal and source of the audio signal also play a part. Also consider the weight and controls. A heavy model may be less comfortable during long work sessions, while lightweight in-ear headphones may not stay securely in every ear.

Which specifications should you check?

Wired or wireless

Choose USB-C earbuds if you are looking for a simple plug-and-play solution for a compatible device. The Samsung EO-IC100 has a USB Type-C connection, a built-in DAC, in-line controls and a microphone. The Sony IER-EX15C also uses USB-C and has a 120cm cable with an integrated remote control.

With wireless earbuds, battery life and the charging case are important. The Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro states up to 10 hours of continuous playback and comes with a USB-C charging case. According to the product specifications, the Apple AirPods 4 offer more than 30 hours of total battery life with the case. Actual usage time depends on volume, features and connection.

Wearing style and fit

  • In-ear headphones: compact and suitable for commuting, calls and music.
  • Sports earbuds: choose a model that stays securely in place and check the IP rating.
  • Over-ear headphones: completely cover the ear and generally provide more physical sound isolation.
  • On-ear headphones: rest on the ear and are often lighter, but may cause pressure after longer periods.

An IPX5 rating means that, according to the stated specifications, the Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro is protected against water jets. This does not guarantee that the product is suitable for immersion. According to the product information, the Apple AirPods Max have no IP protection and are therefore not intended for rain or intense workouts.

Microphone and controls

For online meetings, calls and gaming, headphones with a microphone are more practical than a model without one. Check whether the microphone is located in the earcup, cable or control module. A mute button, volume control and answer button can save time in the office.

A Jabra headset such as the Jabra EVOLVE 30 II MS Stereo is wired, uses a 3.5mm connection and comes with a LINK MS controller for USB. This can be useful for workstations where a computer connection and call controls are important.

Frequently asked questions about earbuds and headphones

Are USB-C earbuds suitable for every smartphone?

Not automatically. The device must support audio via USB-C. Also check whether the connection is intended only for charging. If you are unsure, consult the manual or product specifications for your smartphone, tablet or laptop.

How long do wireless earbuds last?

Usage time per charge is usually stated in hours. The total lifespan of the built-in battery depends on charging cycles, temperature and usage. Store wireless earbuds in the charging case and avoid prolonged exposure to heat. A wired model has no built-in battery and therefore avoids this particular point of wear.

Are noise-cancelling headphones suitable for the office and travelling?

They can be, particularly if you want to reduce background noise while travelling by train or working with concentration. However, check the weight, battery life and whether you can still hear surrounding sounds. When travelling in traffic or cycling, always remain sufficiently aware of your surroundings.
