Choosing dry cat food: how to find the right cat biscuits for your cat

There is a wide choice of dry cat food. Packaging often promises a high meat content, a sensitive digestion formula or extra support for teeth and coat. However, a striking claim does not always say enough about whether a product is suitable for your cat. The right choice starts with age, life stage, activity level and the complete nutritional composition.

Common pitfalls when choosing dry cat food

1. An appealing ingredient name does not tell you everything

“Cat food with chicken”, “cat food with fish” or even cat food with quail eggs may sound clear, but also check where the ingredient appears in the composition. A statement such as “with chicken” can mean something different from a recipe in which chicken is one of the first ingredients.

Also pay attention to the difference between:

  • Fresh meat or fresh fish
  • Dehydrated animal ingredients
  • Animal by-products
  • Plant-based sources of protein
  • Cereals, pulses and other sources of carbohydrates

A recipe containing cereals is not automatically unsuitable. Grain-free cat food is not automatically right for every cat either. Always look at the complete nutritional analysis rather than just the front of the packaging.

2. “Premium” is not a nutritional category

The term premium cat food does not help you assess nutritional value objectively. Check whether the product is labelled as complete pet food. This means it is intended to be fed as a daily diet according to the feeding instructions.

A complementary snack or food without a complete nutritional declaration cannot automatically be used as a main meal. Pet food labelling in the EU is governed, among other things, by Regulation (EC) No 767/2009. Check the packaging for the animal species, life stage, net quantity, composition, analytical constituents and feeding guidelines.

3. A large bag is not always better value

A 5 or 10 kg bag can reduce the price per kilo, but dry food gradually loses its aroma and freshness once opened. For one cat, a smaller pack may be more practical, especially if you do not yet know whether your cat will accept the flavour.

Store cat biscuits:

  • In a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Tightly sealed after every use
  • Preferably in the original bag or a suitable airtight storage container
  • According to the best-before information on the packaging

Three parameters you should always check

1. Age and life stage

Kitten food has a nutritional profile tailored to growth. A kitten has different needs from an adult or senior cat. Look at the stated age range, such as “junior”, “kitten”, “adult” or “senior”.

For kittens from weaning to around 12 months, Purina states that Purina One Junior is suitable for kittens as well as pregnant or nursing cats. The manufacturer mentions DHA, protein and minerals in the product information. These claims come from the brand and product description and should not be interpreted as a medical guarantee.

2. Analytical constituents and energy

Pay attention to crude protein, fat, crude fibre, crude ash and moisture. These percentages can only be compared properly when you also take the moisture content into account. Dry food generally contains little moisture, so your cat must drink enough water.

For a sterilised cat, portion size is particularly important. Cat food for sterilised cats often has an adjusted protein-to-fat ratio or a lower energy density. This does not replace monitoring your cat’s body weight. Weigh out the daily portion rather than relying solely on guesswork.

If your cat has specific health problems, recurring digestive issues or a prescribed diet, it is wise to consult a vet. A product marketed as cat food for sensitive digestion is not the same as a veterinary diet.

3. Composition and tolerance

For a sensitive cat, choose a recipe with a clear composition and do not change food abruptly. A transition lasting 7 to 10 days is recommended for various products. Gradually mix increasing amounts of the new food with the old one.

Also check whether your cat has previously reacted to chicken, beef, fish, cereals or other ingredients. Cat food with fish, for example, may appeal to cats that enjoy strong aromas, while a cat with a known food reaction may need a different source of protein.

Frequently asked questions about dry cat food

How long can you keep an opened bag of dry cat food?

This varies by product and packaging. Follow the information on the label and seal the bag properly after use. Your cat’s food may become less appealing in terms of smell, texture and taste, but always use the official best-before information as your guide.

Is grain-free cat food necessary?

No, not for every cat. Grain-free cat food may suit a specific dietary preference, but cereals do not automatically make a complete product unsuitable. Look at the overall composition, analytical constituents and your cat’s reaction.

How much dry food does an adult cat need per day?

The amount depends on weight, age, activity level, body condition and the energy value of the product. Use the feeding chart on the packaging as a starting point and adjust the portion if your cat’s weight changes. If you are unsure about a healthy weight or your cat has persistent problems, consult a vet.
