Choosing dog and cat food: a practical guide to ingredients, life stage and use

Picking a bag of dog or cat food might seem straightforward – until you start comparing ingredients, nutritional claims and portion sizes side by side. Terms like grain-free, high protein and natural sound appealing, but on their own they don’t tell you whether the food is right for your pet.

As Joybuy’s Product Recommendation Officer, I’ve filtered the most important product information in a practical way. That way, you can see exactly what to check before you buy, and which popular choices suit different situations.

Common pitfalls with dog and cat food

1. Grain-free is mistaken for automatically suitable

Grain-free dog food contains no grains, but it can still include peas, potato, sweet potato or other carbohydrate sources. So always check the full ingredients list. Grain-free is especially relevant when you deliberately want to avoid grains, or when a vet recommends a specific dietary plan. It’s not a general guarantee of better acceptance.

2. A standout ingredient doesn’t tell the whole story

A pack with chicken, lamb, fish or game on the front may contain only a small proportion of that ingredient. Look at the percentages in the composition. For example, Farmina N&D Pumpkin Lamb Adult Small Dog Food states 22% fresh lamb and 20% dehydrated lamb. Purina One Sensitive wet cat food lists chicken at 4%.

Also watch out for terms like “meat and animal derivatives” or “fish and fish derivatives”. These descriptions are permitted, but they give less detail than a list of specific animal species.

3. Treats are added to the main food

Dog treats and cat treats are often complementary foods. They don’t replace a complete pet food. A treat like MeatyWay Chicken Tenders, according to the product information, contains chicken and has 70% crude protein, but it’s intended for in-between meals. Keep the amount limited and deduct it from the daily energy intake when necessary.

What to look for when comparing

Check the life stage and size

Choose puppy food for growing dogs and senior dog food when the age indication matches. A puppy has different nutritional needs from an adult dog. For instance, Farmina N&D Pumpkin Lamb Puppy is designed for medium and large puppies, while Eukanuba Grain Free Puppy Ocean Fish is aimed at small and medium puppies aged 1 to 12 months.

For small dogs, it’s not just the composition that matters – the kibble size is important too. Buddy’s Delicious Duck Meat Chunks, according to the description, has kibbles of around 0.5 to 0.7 cm. That can be more practical for small jaws.

Read the nutritional status on the label

Complete pet food is intended to be given as a full diet according to the instructions for use. Complementary food, such as certain soups or treats, is not suitable as a sole meal.

Felix Soup Fish, for example, is a complementary food for adult cats. The packaging recommends one pouch per 4 kg of body weight per day as a supplement to a complete meal. Felix Every Day Party Mix Selection, on the other hand, is described as complete wet food for adult cats.

Compare analytical constituents and portions

Look at crude protein, fat, fibre, ash and moisture. With wet food, the protein percentage often appears lower because of the high moisture content. Purina One Sensitive wet food states 12.5% crude protein, 4% fat and 78% moisture. You shouldn’t compare this directly with dry food without accounting for the moisture content.

Also check:

  • the daily amount per body weight;
  • the age and breed indication;
  • the recommended transition period;
  • the shelf life and storage instructions;
  • the amount per bag, tin or pouch;
  • any ingredients your pet has previously struggled to tolerate.

When switching foods, several product labels recommend gradually mixing the new food with the old over about seven days. Always keep fresh drinking water available.

Frequently asked questions about dog and cat food

How do I switch to a different dog food?

Gradually mix the new food with the old. Start with a small proportion of the new food and increase it over about seven days. Keep an eye on your dog’s stools, appetite and behaviour. If problems persist, it’s wise to consult a vet.

How long does opened cat food keep?

Always follow the label. Many wet food products recommend storing opened pouches or portions covered in the fridge and using them within 24 to 48 hours. Ideally, let wet food come to room temperature before serving.

Is hypoallergenic dog food necessary for food sensitivities?

Not every sensitivity requires the same diet. A product with lamb, fish or game may contain an alternative protein, but that doesn’t automatically make it hypoallergenic. Check the full ingredients list and ask a vet for advice if symptoms keep recurring.
