Buying a dog bed: how to choose a comfortable and practical place to rest

A dog bed may seem simple to buy, but small differences in size, filling and maintenance determine whether your dog will actually use it. A bed that is too small will quickly feel cramped, a smooth base may slide across the floor, and a cover that cannot be washed properly creates extra work.

Marketing terms can also be confusing. An “orthopaedic dog bed”, for example, is not a fixed quality category. Always check the materials, dimensions, construction and washing instructions rather than relying on the name alone.

Common pitfalls when buying a dog bed

1. Looking only at the outer dimensions

A dog bed with raised sides takes up more space than the sleeping area suggests. Measure your dog while they are lying stretched out and add a few extra centimetres all around. For a crate or a small living room, the available floor space is at least as important as the length of the sleeping area.

For round models, pay attention to the height too. A donut dog bed measuring 90 cm in diameter and 20 cm high may be suitable for a medium-sized dog, but takes up considerably more space than a flat dog mat.

2. Misinterpreting “washable”

Washable does not always mean that the entire dog bed can go in the washing machine. With some models, only the cover can be removed. The inner filling must then be aired or cleaned locally.

Therefore, check:

  • whether the cover can be removed with a zip;
  • which temperature and programme you may use for washing;
  • whether the filling itself is machine washable;
  • whether the cover needs to air-dry;
  • whether a tumble dryer could damage the non-slip layer.

This is especially important with a pet sofa cover. Models with a silicone or rubber underside may only be suitable for a delicate programme and must not be tumble-dried.

3. Treating non-slip as complete protection

An anti-slip dog bed with rubber dots or silicone on the underside can help reduce movement. However, it cannot replace a flat, dry and stable surface. Even a non-slip layer may be less effective on smooth tiles or a wet floor.

Also check the bed regularly for loose seams, tears and exposed filling. With dogs that like to chew, supervision during the first few uses is advisable.

Which features should you check?

Size and location

First decide where the dog bed will be placed:

  • Floor: choose a stable underside and a size that does not get wedged against furniture.
  • Crate: measure the inside of the crate; a bed that is too high can restrict the available space.
  • Sofa: a dog bed for the sofa or a pet sofa protector should be wide enough for your pet’s favourite seating area.
  • Households with several pets: consider a large model or several separate places to rest.

A cat bed or cat mat may work for a small dog, but always check the load-bearing capacity and sleeping area. Conversely, a large dog bed is not automatically practical for a cat that prefers a compact, enclosed space.

Material and filling

Plush, faux fur and cotton feel soft, but require regular maintenance. PP cotton is a synthetic filling commonly used in this product category. Pay particular attention to the construction: does the filling stay in place, is the middle section removable, and can the seams withstand daily use?

A soft dog bed with a bolstered edge can provide a comfortable place to rest for pets that like to lay their head on something. However, the product description should not be interpreted as a medical promise. Even with a so-called orthopaedic dog bed, the actual dimensions, thickness and density of the filling are more important than the name.

Maintenance and delivery

Some beds are vacuum-packed. Once received, they need to be shaken and plumped up to regain their shape. Do this before first use and check that the product is completely dry and undamaged.

A dog feeding mat is not a substitute for a sleeping mat, but it can be useful next to the bed. According to the product description, a silicone model with raised edges helps keep food residue and water within the mat. This makes the floor around the feeding area easier to clean.

Maintaining and replacing a dog bed

Wash a removable cover according to the label and allow all parts to dry completely before putting them back. A dog bed will remain usable for longer if you remove hair and crumbs regularly and treat small stains immediately.

Replace the bed when the filling remains permanently flat, the cover no longer closes properly or tears appear that allow the filling to escape. Its lifespan depends on the size, material, washing frequency and your dog’s behaviour. There is therefore no fixed lifespan for every dog bed.

Frequently asked questions about dog beds

How big should a dog bed be?

Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail while they are relaxed and lying stretched out. Add room all around so they can turn and stretch out. Compare this measurement with the actual sleeping area, not just the overall outer dimensions.

Can a dog bed go in a crate?

Yes, provided the bed fits within the length and width of the crate. Take raised edges into account, as they require additional height and space. With a vacuum-packed model, allow it to expand fully first and check that its dimensions match the crate.

How often should you wash a dog bed?

This depends on use, shedding and soiling. Remove hair between washes and wash a removable cover as soon as it becomes visibly dirty or starts to smell unpleasant. Always follow the care label; an inner cushion is not automatically suitable for machine washing.
