Choosing a dog bed: how to find a comfortable, easy-to-care-for place to sleep

A dog bed should do more than look soft. It needs to suit your dog’s sleeping position, body size and daily habits. For cats too, a suitable dog bed or cat bed can become a permanent place to rest at home.

Marketing terms such as “orthopaedic”, “calming” and “extra sturdy” do not mean much on their own. Always check the dimensions, materials and care instructions. This will help you avoid buying a soft dog bed that quickly loses its shape, is difficult to wash or slides around on the floor.

Three common pitfalls when choosing a dog bed

1. Looking only at the outer dimensions

A 70 cm dog bed is not automatically suitable for a medium-sized dog. With a donut-shaped model, the raised edges take up part of the sleeping surface. Measure your dog while they are lying fully stretched out, then add extra space for turning and stretching.

When choosing a dog bed for large dogs, do not just look at the diameter. Also consider the height of the edge and the firmness of the base. A bed that appears large enough on paper may still feel cramped in practice.

2. Confusing “orthopaedic” with medical support

According to the product description from some brands, egg-crate foam can provide a supportive structure and may be suitable for older pets. This is a product specification, not a medical guarantee. An orthopaedic dog bed is not a substitute for veterinary advice when your dog has joint, back or neck problems.

Focus on the construction: does it have firm foam or just loose filling? Does the bed have a raised headrest? Does the base retain enough of its shape when your dog lies down?

3. Washable does not always mean fully washable

For many models, only the cover or central cushion is machine washable. The inner filling may not be suitable for the washing machine. Before buying, check:

  • which part can be removed;
  • what temperature the cover can be washed at;
  • whether the filling may only be spot-cleaned;
  • how long all the components need to dry;
  • whether the zip and seams need to be checked regularly.

A washable dog bed is especially practical when the cover can be removed easily. This helps with hair, mud and accidents, but always follow the care label.

The most important specifications to check

Size and sleeping style

Measure your dog from the nose to the base of the tail while they are lying comfortably. Then add approximately 15 to 25 cm. A dog that likes to sleep curled up may benefit from a dog bed with raised edges. A dog that likes to stretch out will be better suited to a flat dog bed with plenty of internal space.

As a general guide:

  • Small dogs and cats: a compact donut dog bed of around 60 cm may be suitable.
  • Small and medium-sized dogs: models of around 70 cm provide room to curl up and stretch out to a limited extent.
  • Medium-sized dogs: look for 90 cm or larger, depending on the dog’s body length.
  • Large dogs: choose a wide bed measuring 100 to 140 cm and check the actual sleeping area.

Product dimensions are not always directly comparable. Check the internal dimensions where these are available.

Filling and support

A soft dog bed made from plush, sherpa or long-pile fabric feels comfortable, but comfort also depends on the filling. PP cotton is light and resilient, making it suitable for a cosy donut shape. Egg-crate foam generally provides a more structured base according to the product description.

For older animals or dogs that appear to need extra support, a firm core, low entry point and well-filled edge are useful features to compare. Do not use “orthopaedic” as your only buying criterion.

Non-slip features and stability

A non-slip dog bed is practical on smooth floors such as laminate, PVC or tiles. Look at the underside: rubber feet, non-slip fabric or a separate mat can help prevent the bed from moving when your dog gets in. This only works effectively when the bed is placed on a flat, dry surface.

Also check the non-slip layer regularly. Stability may be reduced if it becomes worn. Do not place a soft bed in a high or unstable position, and keep plush materials away from heat sources and naked flames.

How to use a new dog bed

Many soft beds are vacuum-packed. Once you have unpacked the bed, shake it out and give the material time to regain its shape, following the product instructions. Then place the bed on a flat, dry surface in a quiet corner.

A familiar blanket or toy can help your pet get used to it. After a few days, check that the bed is not sliding around, that the seams are intact and that your dog has enough room. If your dog tends to chew, supervision is important, as loose fabric, zip components or filling could be swallowed.

Frequently asked questions about dog beds

How big should a dog bed be?

Measure your dog from the nose to the base of the tail while they are lying fully stretched out. Add approximately 15 to 25 cm. With a donut dog bed, you also need to account for the raised edge, as this reduces the usable sleeping area.

How do I clean a washable dog bed?

First remove the cover or central cushion if the product description says this is possible. Wash with mild detergent and follow the care label. Allow all parts to dry completely before putting them back together. With some models, the inner filling must not be washed.

How long does a dog bed last?

The lifespan depends on the material, your dog’s weight, washing and any chewing or digging behaviour. Regularly vacuuming, airing and checking for loose seams will help keep the bed usable for longer. Replace the bed when the filling is exposed, the base no longer provides support or the non-slip layer is badly worn.
