Choosing a dog bed: how to find a comfortable, easy-care place to rest

A dog bed should suit your pet’s size, sleeping position and everyday habits. Yet many buyers focus mainly on a soft exterior or an attractive colour. This can cause problems later: the bed may flatten quickly, slide across the floor or be difficult to wash.

The same points apply to a cat bed, dog mattress or cat mattress. A few checks beforehand can help you avoid a disappointing purchase and choose a place to rest that suits your sofa, crate or floor.

Three common pitfalls when choosing a dog bed

1. Soft filling that quickly loses its shape

A fluffy dog bed may feel comfortable when it arrives, but the outer fabric tells you little about the filling. Check which material is used and whether the bed needs fluffing up after delivery. For example, products with PP cotton filling may arrive vacuum-packed and need time to regain their original shape.

Also check how to care for the filling. On some models, only the cover is washable and the inner filling must be spot-cleaned. That’s practical, but it doesn’t make the whole dog bed machine washable.

2. A non-slip base that doesn’t suit the floor

A non-slip dog bed helps reduce sliding, but it only works well when the base is in full contact with a flat, dry surface. Rubber dots or silicone sections are no substitute for placing the bed securely.

A dog mat can still move on a smooth laminate floor if there’s dust underneath. Check the base regularly and avoid placing the bed partly on a rug or across a threshold.

3. Underestimating the size

A dog bed for medium-sized dogs needs to accommodate not only your dog’s body length but also their favourite sleeping position. Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail, and allow extra room if they like to stretch out. For a dog bed for large dogs, the height of the raised edge matters too: it shouldn’t make getting in and out unnecessarily difficult.

For a round bed, check the outer diameter, not just the sleeping area. A 20 cm edge can noticeably reduce the usable space.

What features should you check?

Size and where you’ll use it

First, decide where the dog bed will go:

  • In a crate: measure the inside of the crate. A thick edge can take up space or obstruct the door.
  • On the floor: choose a stable base and make sure the bed isn’t in a walkway.
  • On the sofa: a pet sofa protector can help reduce hair and dirt on the upholstery.
  • For an older dog: choose a model with a low entrance and even, supportive filling.

A dog crate mat is especially practical when it fits the crate neatly and can be removed easily for cleaning.

Material and filling

Many models in this selection have a plush or soft fabric upper and PP cotton filling. This creates a soft surface, but care requirements vary from product to product. Check:

  • whether the cover is removable;
  • whether it can go in the washing machine;
  • which wash cycle is recommended;
  • whether the inner filling needs to be cleaned separately;
  • whether it can be air-dried or tumble-dried.

A washable dog bed is especially useful in households with muddy paws, moulting pets or several animals. Always follow the care label. Some models are best washed in a laundry bag on a delicate cycle; a tumble dryer may damage the non-slip base.

Raised edges and support

A dog bed with raised edges can be comfortable for dogs who like to rest their head on something or feel enclosed. Check that the edges are sturdy enough and that your dog can get in and out easily.

The term orthopaedic dog bed is often used for models that offer extra support. Don’t judge the term in isolation: check the construction, thickness and composition of the filling. Product descriptions may state that some models support the neck, back or joints. This is not a medical benefit and does not replace advice from a vet.

Frequently asked questions about dog beds

How big should a dog bed be?

Measure your dog from nose to the base of the tail and allow extra room for their usual sleeping position. Compare this with the internal dimensions of the sleeping area. For a round bed, check both the diameter and how much space the edge takes up.

How often should you wash a dog bed?

It depends on how often it’s used, how much your dog moults and how dirty it gets. Wash a removable cover when it looks dirty or starts to smell. Use the cycle specified on the care label and let the bed dry completely before your pet uses it again.

How long does a dog bed last?

Its lifespan depends on your dog’s weight, scratching, biting, washing and everyday use. Check the seams, zips, filling and non-slip base regularly. Stop using the bed if the fabric tears or the filling becomes visible.
