Buying a contact grill: how to choose a model that suits your kitchen

A contact grill can be useful for toasted sandwiches, panini, vegetables, fish and meat. However, models vary considerably in ease of use, capacity and cleaning. A compact sandwich maker is not automatically suitable for a family dinner, while a powerful multifunctional grill may be unnecessarily large if you mainly make the occasional toasted sandwich.

Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer highlights the key points to consider. This allows you to compare an electric contact grill based on verifiable features, rather than eye-catching marketing claims.

Common pitfalls when buying a contact grill

1. A high wattage does not tell you everything

A power rating of 2000 or 3000 watts can provide quick heating, but it does not give a complete picture of performance. Heat distribution, the size of the plates and temperature control are also important. For example, a small grill with a high power rating offers less room for several portions.

So look at the combination of:

  • Power rating and temperature setting
  • Size of the grilling surface
  • Whether the top plate can be adjusted
  • Use as a closed grill or open tabletop grill

2. “Non-stick coating” does not mean cleaning happens by itself

A grill with a non-stick coating can reduce the need for a lot of oil and usually helps prevent food from sticking quickly. However, the coating requires careful maintenance. Metal spatulas, scouring pads and overheating can damage it.

Before buying, check whether the grill has removable plates and whether the instructions state that they can go in the dishwasher. With some models, only the drip tray is dishwasher-safe. The electrical housing must never be submerged in water.

3. Multifunctional often means that more space is needed

A multifunctional grill with a 180° opening, grill plate and multiple settings can be versatile, but it also takes up more room on the worktop and in the cupboard. So check the dimensions when fully open. Vertical storage can be practical in a smaller Dutch kitchen, but the appliance must remain stable when stored.

Which specifications are important?

Grilling surface and capacity

For one or two people, a compact panini grill or toasted sandwich maker may be sufficient. Check how many sandwiches the product specifications say can fit at the same time. The Alpina Contact Grill, for example, is specified as holding up to two sandwiches.

Larger plates are more convenient for a family. Some models have two cooking surfaces or can be opened fully. This allows you to prepare ingredients side by side, but you will need a larger clear surface.

Temperature control and programmes

A simple sandwich maker often has an on/off switch and an indicator light. This is suitable for bread-based products, but less flexible for meat, fish or vegetables.

A contact grill for meat and vegetables should ideally have an adjustable thermostat. According to the product specifications, the Rommelsbacher KG 2020 has a continuously adjustable thermostat and five height settings. A model with separate temperature control for each plate, such as the Adler AD 3059, gives you extra control when preparing different ingredients at the same time.

Automatic programmes can make setting up the grill easier. According to Tefal’s product description, OptiGrill models measure the thickness of the food, among other things, and adjust the cooking time accordingly. This is a brand claim; the result still depends on the ingredients, quantity and use in accordance with the instructions.

Cleaning, drip tray and materials

A grill with removable plates is usually easier to clean than a model with fixed plates. A removable drip tray helps collect released fat and moisture. This does not automatically mean that a dish will be fat-free or healthier; it mainly makes collection and cleaning more straightforward.

Also look out for:

  • Non-stick coating and permitted kitchen utensils
  • Dishwasher-safe parts according to the instructions
  • Cool-touch handle
  • Non-slip feet
  • CE marking and clear safety instructions
  • Suitable mains voltage for use in the Netherlands, generally 220–240 volts

Use safely and keep your grill looking its best for longer

Always place a contact grill on a flat, heat-resistant surface with sufficient space around it. The plates and housing can become hot. Use the cool-touch handle and allow the appliance to cool down completely before removing the plates or drip tray.

When using a non-stick coating, only use wooden, silicone or nylon utensils. Wipe the housing clean with a slightly damp cloth and follow the instructions for removable parts. Do not leave a grill unattended during use and unplug it before cleaning.

Frequently asked questions about contact grills

Is a contact grill suitable for everyday use?

That depends on the model and the meals you prepare. A compact toasted sandwich maker is mainly suitable for bread-based products. For grilling meat and vegetables every day, an adjustable thermostat, a sufficiently large grilling surface and easy cleaning are important.

How much electricity does an electric contact grill use?

Consumption depends on the power rating and how long you use it. A 2000-watt model uses a maximum of 2 kilowatt hours per hour when operating continuously at full power. In practice, a grill does not heat at maximum power all the time. Check your energy contract and usage duration for a more accurate estimate.

How long does a contact grill last?

Its lifespan depends on the build quality, maintenance and how often you use the appliance. A model with replaceable or removable plates can be practical when parts become worn. Store the grill in a dry place, avoid scratching the coating and follow the manufacturer’s safety and cleaning instructions. The statutory guarantee in the European Union for this product category is at least two years, although additional rights under Dutch consumer law may apply.
