Choosing a combination microwave: a practical guide for every kitchen

A combination microwave can heat, defrost and grill food, and sometimes even bake using hot air. That makes a single appliance an appealing choice for students, tenants, couples and small families. However, the range can be difficult to compare. A model with a grill is not automatically a combination microwave with oven function, and a large number of programmes says little about how easy it is to use day to day.

Pay particular attention to these common pitfalls:

  • A grill is mistaken for an oven function: a microwave with a grill can brown food, but it does not have a hot-air function for baking.
  • The stated capacity does not tell the whole story: a 28-litre microwave may be less suitable for a large oven dish because of the shape of its interior than a smaller model with a clever layout.
  • Power ratings are not always stated consistently: check whether the quoted wattage refers to microwave power, grill power, hot-air power or maximum power consumption.
  • A turntable limits the available space: a microwave with a turntable heats food by rotating it, but a square dish may not fit. A flatbed model has no turntable, but does require careful consideration of placement and cleaning the base.

Which functions do you really need?

First decide what you want to use the appliance for. For heating and defrosting, a basic microwave is often sufficient. If you also want to prepare oven dishes, pizza or gratinated meals, a model with a grill or hot-air function will be more useful.

Microwave with grill

A microwave with grill uses a heating element at the top. This allows you to brown cheese, for example, or grill bread and sausages. According to the product details, the Sharp YC-MG01E-W has a microwave power rating of 800 watts, a grill power rating of 1000 watts and a capacity of 20 litres. The specifications do not mention an oven or hot-air function.

Combination microwave with oven function

A combination microwave with oven function combines microwave radiation with a grill and usually convection heat. This means you can not only heat food, but also bake. Always check that “oven function” is actually listed as hot air or convection in the specifications. For example, the Panasonic NN-CT56 lists grilling, hot air, defrosting and automatic programmes.

Microwave with defrost function

A microwave with defrost function can operate based on time or weight. A weight-based programme is handy for meat, bread and frozen meals, but check the food during the process and turn it if necessary. The function is not a substitute for safe food preparation: follow the storage and cooking instructions on the packaging.

Three specifications to check in advance

1. Capacity and interior space

For one person, a 20-litre microwave may be sufficient. A 25-litre or 28-litre microwave offers more room for plates and oven dishes. For larger portions and square dishes, a 35-litre microwave may be more practical.

In addition to the capacity in litres, look at:

  • the diameter of the turntable;
  • the height of the oven cavity;
  • the external dimensions and required ventilation space;
  • the dimensions of the supplied baking tray or grill rack.

According to the product specifications, the Samsung MC28H5015CS/EN has a capacity of 28 litres, a 32 cm turntable and external dimensions of approximately 51.7 × 47.48 × 31 cm. The Samsung MC35R8058CG/EN offers 35 litres and a 38 cm turntable which, according to the description, can be switched off to accommodate larger square dishes.

2. Power and temperature

A higher microwave power rating can speed up cooking, but the result also depends on portion size, programme and dish. So compare the microwave power separately from the grill and hot-air power.

The temperature range is also important for baking. The Sharp YC-PC254AE-S lists a hot-air power rating of 2050 watts and temperature settings from 110 to 210 °C. The Panasonic NN-CT56 lists a maximum temperature of 220 °C. For every model, check the manual for preheating instructions, combination settings and suitable accessories.

3. Placement, connection and safety

A freestanding combination microwave should be placed on a flat, stable and heat-resistant surface. Leave the clearance around the appliance specified by the manufacturer. It should only be installed in a kitchen cupboard if the model and installation instructions permit this.

Also check for:

  • an earthed socket and suitable connection;
  • a door that closes properly and an undamaged door seal;
  • a child lock if you have young children at home;
  • sufficient ventilation openings;
  • crockery suitable for microwave use.

Do not use metal during microwave operation unless the manual expressly permits the accessory to be used in grill or combination mode. Never switch on an empty microwave.

Frequently asked questions about combination microwaves

Is a combination microwave more energy-efficient than a conventional oven?

That depends on the dish, portion size, selected function and cooking time. A microwave may take less time than a large oven for small portions. However, a combination setting or hot-air function also uses heating elements. So do not compare wattage alone; consider the cooking time and use the right setting.

Can I install a combination microwave in a kitchen cupboard?

Only if the model is suitable for this and the manual permits it. A freestanding combination microwave often needs ventilation space around it. Measure the recess, check the minimum clearances and make sure the plug remains accessible. A built-in model, such as an oven specifically designed for this purpose, has different installation requirements from a freestanding appliance.

How long does a combination microwave last?

Its service life depends on use, maintenance, ventilation and the condition of the door and seal. Regularly clean up spilled food with a soft, damp cloth, do not use abrasive products and allow the appliance to cool down after grilling. Stop using it if you notice sparks, smoke, a damaged door or a faulty seal, and consult the manual or customer service.
