Choosing coffee products: how to compare flavour, convenience and storage options

Buying a new supply of coffee sounds simple, until you have to choose between instant coffee, coffee capsules, concentrated coffee, cold brew and flavoured coffee. Marketing copy often highlights flavour, Arabica coffee or convenient packaging. But these terms don’t always tell you how much effort preparation takes, how to store the product or what each cup will cost.

Look out for these three common pitfalls:

  • “Sugar-free” doesn’t automatically mean low-calorie or caffeine-free. Check the nutritional information and warnings on the packaging.
  • A distinctive flavour isn’t the same as sweet coffee. Flavoured coffee may contain fruit concentrate, mint powder or flavourings, while the coffee itself can still come through clearly.
  • Airtight packaging is only useful if the size suits your supply. An oversized coffee storage tin can be impractical if your coffee will sit in it for weeks.

Which coffee products suit your needs?

1. Concentrated coffee for quick preparation

Concentrated coffee usually comes in small sticks or sachets. Dilute the contents with water, milk or a plant-based drink. This makes it a good choice for the office, when you’re out and about, or if you don’t want to use a coffee machine.

Before buying, check:

  • the recommended amount of water or milk;
  • the number of servings per pack;
  • the caffeine content, if listed;
  • the ingredients, such as sweeteners, flavourings and acids.

According to the product information, Yongpu caramel macchiato contains water, 100% Arabica coffee beans, erythritol, stabilising ingredients and food flavouring. The stated nutritional value per 18-gram serving is 19 kJ and 4.5 kcal. The manufacturer also states that each serving contains zero grams of sugar. These are product specifications; the taste may vary from person to person.

According to the product information, the Yongpu black variant contains no sugar, fat or carbohydrates per 100 grams and has a stated caffeine content of at least 200 mg per kilogram. The packaging carries a warning about its high caffeine content. Always check the current label, especially if you drink several cups a day.

2. Instant coffee and cold brew for when you’re out and about

Instant coffee is practical because you only need water. Cold instant coffee is less straightforward: some powders don’t dissolve well in cold water. Look out for terms such as instant dissolve or instructions for preparing it cold.

Office Fish products are individually packed in 2-gram servings. The lemon and mint, strawberry and berries, and watermelon and mint variants are intended to be made with cold or hot water. According to the product information, the variants contain Arabica coffee and a range of fruit ingredients. Preparation instructions usually recommend 150 to 200 ml of water per stick.

Be aware of the difference between:

  • cold brew coffee: generally smooth and suitable for cold preparation;
  • instant coffee: designed to dissolve quickly in water;
  • flavoured coffee: contains additional ingredients that shape its flavour.

“ No added sugar” doesn’t mean a product contains no sugars. Fruit concentrates can contribute naturally occurring sugars. Check the nutritional information rather than relying on the front of the pack alone.

3. Coffee capsules and compatibility

When buying coffee capsules, check compatibility first. A capsule designed for a Nespresso Original machine won’t necessarily fit every other system. The Douwe Egberts Excellent Gold Lungo pack states that it is compatible with L’OR Barista and Nespresso Original machines. The box contains 20 capsules, with an intensity rating of 7 on a scale of 1 to 12.

Also check:

  • whether you want to make a lungo, espresso or milk-based drink;
  • the roast and flavour profile;
  • the number of capsules per pack;
  • whether the packaging reseals securely once opened;
  • whether the capsules are made from aluminium, plastic or another material.

The term Arabica coffee tells you which type of coffee is used, but doesn’t, by itself, indicate its strength, roast or how it will taste to you. Compare several features at once.

4. Storing coffee: tin, box or capsule holder?

Coffee needs protection from moisture, heat, light and air. A tight-fitting lid helps, but check the capacity and dimensions too. A small coffee storage tin is often more convenient for a limited amount of beans or ground coffee. For coffee capsules, a slim holder is more practical than a wide storage jar.

The 5Five Coffee Storage Box measures 11 × 11 × 19 cm and has an airtight lid, according to the product information. Its maximum load is listed as 500 grams. The 5Five Coffee Capsule Storage Box has a capacity of 1.2 litres, measures 8 × 8 × 18 cm and holds up to 20 pods, according to the product specifications.

Don’t store coffee above a hob or in direct sunlight. A dry kitchen cupboard is usually more suitable. Wash a metal tin according to the care instructions and let it dry completely before adding fresh coffee.

Frequently asked questions about coffee products

Which coffee is convenient for the office?

Instant coffee, individual sticks and concentrated coffee are practical when you don’t have a coffee machine available. Check whether you only need hot water or whether the product can also be prepared with cold water.

How long do coffee products keep?

The best-before date is shown on the packaging. Store unopened coffee in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Once opened, an airtight coffee storage tin helps keep out moisture and odours. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

How much does each cup of coffee cost?

To work out the cost per cup, divide the price of the pack by the number of servings. For coffee capsules, count the capsules; for sticks, check how many sachets are in the box. Also factor in any milk, syrup or other additions you need.
