Buying coffee: how to choose the right coffee for your machine and taste

When you want to buy coffee online, you quickly come across dozens of varieties, formats and flavour descriptions. However, eye-catching packaging or a high intensity rating does not always mean that the coffee is suitable for your machine. The most important choice therefore starts not with the brand, but with the brewing method, grind and flavour you prefer.

Common pitfalls when buying coffee

1. Choosing coffee without considering your machine

Coffee pods, Senseo coffee pods, ground coffee and coffee capsules are not interchangeable. A pod machine uses soft, round pods, while a filter coffee machine requires ground coffee and a paper filter. Capsules will only fit when the system matches the capsule.

So check your machine type first:

  • Pod machine: choose coffee pod products that are explicitly suitable for pod machines or Senseo.
  • Filter coffee machine: use ground filter coffee with a suitable grind.
  • Espresso machine or moka pot: choose a finer grind intended for this brewing method.
  • Manual brewing: drip bag coffee is convenient if you do not have your own grinder or filter holder.
  • Without a machine: instant coffee works with hot or cold water and sometimes with milk.

2. Confusing intensity with caffeine content

Dark Roast coffee generally tastes stronger and more roasted than Regular Roast coffee. That does not automatically mean that it contains more caffeine. The final amount of caffeine depends on factors including the beans, dosage and brewing method.

So pay attention to the difference between:

  • Roast: lightly, medium or dark roasted.
  • Flavour intensity: how strong or full-bodied the coffee is described as tasting.
  • Decaffeinated: coffee from which most of the caffeine has been removed; always check the packaging for exact information.

3. Looking only at the price per pack

A 250-gram bag of ground coffee and a box of 36 coffee pods cannot be compared directly. It is best to work out the price per cup. Also check how much coffee each pod, capsule or sachet contains. Individually wrapped drip bags and sticks can be practical, but they often contain less total weight than a larger pack.

Three parameters you should always check

1. Compatibility

The product listing should clearly state what the coffee is suitable for. For the pod products mentioned, for example, it states that they can be used with Senseo or pod machines. Do not use a pod in a capsule machine, and do not place loose ground coffee directly into a capsule holder.

Extra care is needed with capsules. Check the exact system name, as a product description may mention multiple systems. If in doubt, follow your machine’s manual.

2. Grind and brewing method

The grind affects the flow rate and flavour. Filter coffee requires a different grind size from coffee for espresso or a moka pot. According to the product description, Douwe Egberts Red Mark Quick Filter is intended for filter coffee machines. Kanis & Gunnink Quick Filter is also finely ground for filter brewing.

Drip bag coffee does not require a separate filter holder. Hang the bag over your cup and slowly pour hot water of approximately 90–95 °C over the coffee, as stated for the Luckin and RiXing products.

3. Ingredients, contents and storage

Check whether the product contains 100% coffee and whether it consists of Arabica, Robusta or a blend. Arabica coffee is often chosen for its smoother, more aromatic flavour profile, while blends containing Robusta may have a fuller character according to the product description.

Also check:

  • total weight and number of portions;
  • roast level, such as Regular Roast or Dark Roast;
  • whether it is decaffeinated;
  • best-before information on the packaging;
  • storage in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Frequently asked questions about buying coffee

Which coffee is suitable for a Senseo machine?

Choose coffee pods that are explicitly suitable for pod machines or Senseo. Senseo coffee pods are not capsules and belong in the dedicated pod holder. When buying, also check whether the packaging refers to one or two cups, and follow your machine’s instructions.

How long does ground coffee stay fresh?

The best-before date is shown on the packaging. Once opened, quality generally declines more quickly due to air, moisture, heat and light. Keep ground coffee well sealed in a cool, dry place. Do not use damaged packaging, and always follow the brand’s storage instructions.

How much does coffee cost per cup?

This depends on the purchase price, number of portions and dosage. Divide the price of the pack by the number of pods, capsules, sachets or expected cups. A larger pack is not automatically better value if you leave part of it unused until it goes stale. For offices and households that consume coffee every day, however, a larger pack can be practical.

Is Arabica coffee always milder?

Not necessarily. Arabica refers to the type of coffee bean, while the roast and brewing method also influence the flavour. A 100% Arabica product can be either medium or dark roasted. So look at the complete combination of bean, roast, grind and product description before buying coffee.
