Wireless earbuds are great for music, films, phone calls, travel and sport. Yet a long list of features means little if the comfort is poor, the battery life only holds up under ideal conditions, or the earbuds don’t work well with your phone.
So pay particular attention to three common pitfalls:
Battery claims without clear conditions
A claim like “up to 40 or 55 hours” often refers to the total usage time with the charging case, and sometimes without active noise cancellation. The playback time of the earbuds themselves is usually lower.
Noise cancelling that doesn’t suit your use
ANC earbuds can reduce background noise, but the effect depends on the fit, the environment and the mode you select. In traffic or while cycling, a transparency mode may actually be preferable.
A poor fit
In-ear earbuds don’t seal equally well in every ear. A bad seal can mean less bass, weaker noise cancelling and discomfort during longer use. So check how many sizes of ear tips or stability wings are included.
Don’t just compare the total battery life with the case. Also check the playback time per charge and whether that applies with ANC switched on. The Apple AirPods Pro 3, for example, claim up to 8 hours with noise cancelling and up to 10 hours in transparency mode. For the JBL Wave Buds 2, the product description mentions up to 40 hours total when ANC is off, with a maximum of 8 hours of music playback according to the specs.
For daily use, a charging case is important. If you travel often or have long working days, you might also want to look for fast charging, USB-C and possibly wireless charging.
Most Bluetooth earbuds are in-ear models with silicone tips. Where possible, choose a product that comes with multiple sizes. The Apple AirPods Pro 3 are supplied with five sizes of silicone ear tips. The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds come with three sizes of ear tips and stability bands.
An open-ear model, like the soundcore AeroClip, works differently. These wireless earbuds rest near your ear and don’t seal the ear canal in the same way. That can be comfortable when you want to stay aware of your surroundings while walking or working. On the other hand, open-ear earbuds generally offer less isolation from outside noise.
Pay attention to the exact IP rating. IP54 means protection against dust and splashing water, while IPX5 indicates protection against water jets from certain directions. Neither automatically means you can swim with them.
The Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro has an IPX5 rating according to the product specs. The JBL Wave Buds 2 list IP54 for the earbuds and IPX2 for the case. The Samsung Galaxy Buds4 Pro list IP57; the product information warns that they are not intended for swimming or prolonged submersion. Keep a wet case dry and only charge it once the charging contacts and USB-C port are dry.
Why this fits the profile: These Bluetooth earbuds combine ANC, an app for sound settings and multipoint connection with a compact charging case. That’s practical for music, phone calls and daily commuting.
The product description distinguishes between use with and without ANC. A transparency mode and app settings are also available.
ANC, IP54 for the earbuds, USB-C and multipoint connection according to the product information.
Why this fits the profile: This model is aimed at users who place a high value on adjustable sound, noise reduction and comfort during travel, work or extended listening sessions.
The Fit Kit and stability bands help you adjust the fit. Aware Mode offers an alternative to full isolation.
Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint, CustomTune, ANC and up to 6 hours of listening per full charge.
Why this fits the profile: Users with Galaxy devices in particular can benefit from features like Auto Switch, the Galaxy Wearable app and customisable sound settings.
The IP57 rating is not presented as swim-proof. The product information states that submersion should be avoided.
2-way speakers, ANC, six microphones, Bluetooth 6.1 and up to 7 hours of playback time without ANC.
We’ve put together a full, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and comply with current European safety regulations.
Most wireless earbuds work with devices that support Bluetooth, including Android phones, iPhones, tablets and laptops. Some features are brand-specific though. Automatic switching, advanced equaliser settings or finding a lost earbud, for example, may work better within the same ecosystem. So check compatibility and the required app before you order.
The lifespan depends on the built-in battery, charging frequency, temperature and how you use them. Store the earbuds in the case, avoid prolonged exposure to heat and charge them with a suitable USB-C cable. An IP rating also doesn’t protect against every type of moisture. The statutory guarantee in the EU for this product category is at least two years, with additional rights that may apply under national law.
They can be, but choose a model with an appropriate IP rating and a secure fit. ANC earbuds can reduce background noise, which means you need to be extra careful in traffic or in places where you need to hear others. For walking or exercising in a busy environment, a transparency mode or open-ear design may be more practical. Also listen at a moderate volume and clean the earbuds after use with a soft, dry cloth.
