A ceiling light might seem simple to choose, until you have to consider the fitting, dimensions, colour temperature and ceiling height. A light that looks compact in the online shop can be too large for a small room. And a decorative pendant light can look lovely above a dining table, but be impractical in a walkway.
Marketing copy can also be confusing. So it’s best to focus on verifiable details such as material, diameter, height, fitting, light output and IP rating. That way, you’ll avoid a bad purchase and choose lighting that suits your home.
A modern ceiling light or vintage ceiling light should of course fit your interior. But the dimensions are at least as important. Check beforehand:
A light that is 37 cm wide might be suitable for a bedroom or hallway, but could still feel overpowering in a small alcove. With a pendant light, the hanging height also determines everyday comfort.
Not every ceiling light comes with a bulb. With some models, you need to buy an E27 or G9 bulb yourself. So check not only the style, but also:
An E27 ceiling light often offers flexibility because you can replace the bulb. A G9 ceiling light works with a different, smaller type of bulb and therefore requires a compatible light source.
With integrated LED lighting, wattage, lumens and colour temperature are more important than general sales claims. A lower wattage alone doesn’t tell you how much light a fitting gives. So look at the combination.
The Brilliant Livio, according to its product specification, has an integrated LED module of 12 watts, a light output of 1300 lumens and a colour temperature of 3000 kelvin. The stated energy efficiency class is F. That’s more transparent than just the description “efficient”.
For a living room or dining room, a light can be visually prominent. In a hallway, small bedroom or home with a low ceiling, a flush-fitting model is usually more practical. A ceiling light for low ceilings should ideally have a limited height and not protrude far.
Also measure the distance between the connection point and furniture. With a pendant light above the dining table, the light must hang high enough not to block the view. A cord of 1.1 metres, as with the Aigostar pendant light, gives room for adjustment, but the final mounting height depends on the ceiling and the suspension.
Colour temperature is expressed in kelvin:
Lumens indicate how much light the source produces. For mood lighting, a lower light output is often sufficient. For general lighting in a larger living room, more light may be needed. Bear in mind that a fitting such as E27 or G9 does not automatically determine the light output; that depends on the bulb you choose.
Check whether the material suits the use. Steel or metal is generally easy to wipe clean, while fabric and cotton require more care with dust and heat. With a light that has a fabric shade, you must follow the safety warnings and keep sufficient distance from heat sources and flammable materials.
A CE mark indicates that the manufacturer declares the product meets the relevant EU requirements. This is not a quality ranking. Also check the IP rating. IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. IP44, according to the product information, offers protection that goes beyond IP20, but always check whether the specific location and electrical installation are suitable.
Why this fits the profile: The black steel construction and hemp rope decoration give it a vintage look. With an E27 fitting, you can choose your own compatible bulb for the living room, hallway or dining room.
The fitting and dimensions are clearly stated: E27, 25 cm diameter, 110 cm height and a cord of 1.1 metres. The E27 bulb is not included, so you can factor that into your budget from the start.
Steel housing, E27 fitting, 220–240 V and a design that suits several interior styles.
Why this fits the profile: The silver-coloured fitting with transparent beads is designed for those looking for decorative lighting in a bedroom, living room or dining room.
The technical details are concrete: three G9 fittings, maximum 5 W per light point, 25 cm diameter and IP44. The G9 bulbs are not included.
Three light points, replaceable bulbs, CE mark according to the product information and a compact height of 32 cm.
Why this fits the profile: This flush-fitting model is aimed at general lighting in a hallway, kitchen, study or guest room with limited ceiling height.
The height is only 6.5 cm, so the light barely protrudes. In addition, 1300 lumens, 12 watts and 3000 K are clearly stated in the product specifications.
Integrated LED lighting, warm white light, 28.5 cm diameter and a round metal-plastic housing.
We’ve put together a full, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and comply with current European safety regulations.
Switch off the power before installation and use fixing materials that are suitable for your ceiling type. With a Class I light, as stated for the Brilliant Livio, correct earthing is required. If in doubt, have the electrical connection carried out by a qualified installer.
Clean metal, plastic and acrylic parts with a soft, dry cloth. With the vidaXL crystal ceiling light, it is recommended to switch off the power and not to use water or aggressive cleaning agents. A fabric or cotton shade requires extra distance from heat and a suitable bulb.
Choose a flush-fitting model with a low height. The Brilliant Livio is, according to the specifications, 6.5 cm high and is therefore aimed at spaces where a hanging light is less practical. Also check the diameter, so the light doesn’t become too large for the room.
That depends on the bulb you choose, the wattage and the number of hours of use. E27 and G9 are fitting types and don’t in themselves say anything about energy consumption. So compare the wattage and, with LED bulbs, the light output in lumens.
The lifespan depends on the bulb, hours of use, heat dissipation and installation. With replaceable E27 and G9 fittings, you can replace the bulb when it fails. With integrated LED lighting, the module is part of the fitting. So check the stated lifespan, warranty terms and the possibility of replacement before you order.
