Choosing cat food: a practical guide to wet food, dry food and treats

Buying cat food online seems simple, but packaging often uses terms that promise more than they actually explain. An appealing picture of meat, the words “premium” or “grain-free” and a large multipack are no guarantee that the product is right for your cat.

As a Joybuy Product Recommendation Officer, I focus on information you can verify: whether the product is labelled complete food or complementary food, its ingredients, analytical constituents, portion size and storage advice. This helps you avoid paying too much for cat food that isn’t suitable as a daily meal.

Three common pitfalls when choosing cat food

1. “With meat” doesn’t automatically mean a high meat content

The packaging may say “with chicken”, “with beef” or “cat food with meat”, while the recipe also contains cereals, vegetable protein extracts or animal by-products. So check the full ingredients list. Ingredients are generally listed in descending order by weight. A named flavour ingredient may therefore make up only part of the product’s overall composition.

2. Grain-free isn’t a general guarantee of quality

Grain-free cat food contains no grains, but it may still contain peas, chickpeas, potato substitutes or other plant-based ingredients. Grain-free may be a practical preference, but on its own it doesn’t tell you whether a product is complete, suitable for adult cats or right for your cat’s energy needs.

3. A multipack isn’t always better value

A cat food multipack often lowers the price per portion, but first check the shelf life, portion size and your cat’s preferences. A large stock-up isn’t much use if your cat turns its nose up at a flavour. With wet cat food, you’ll also need to follow the refrigeration advice and use-by period on the packaging once it’s opened.

What information should you check?

Complete or complementary food

For daily meals, look for complete and balanced food. This means the product is labelled as suitable for feeding as a main food. Cat treats and complementary food are intended as extras and shouldn’t simply replace main meals.

For example, the INABA Churu Multipack Chicken & Beef is labelled as a complementary treat. INABA Fun Bites Cat Chicken Wraps are also labelled as complementary food. Use these products as a reward or addition, and take the total amount of food into account.

Moisture, protein and fat

Wet food contains a lot of moisture. The stated values, such as 78% moisture in Ziwi PEAK CAT CANS Venison, aren’t directly comparable with those for dry cat food. Dry food usually contains less moisture per 100 grams, so it’s more concentrated.

As well as the protein percentage, check:

  • moisture content, especially when comparing wet and dry food;
  • crude fat, which is relevant to total energy intake;
  • crude fibre and ash, which provide extra context about the composition;
  • the recommended amount based on weight and activity;
  • whether taurine and added vitamins and minerals are listed on the label.

A high protein percentage doesn’t automatically mean you should feed more. Follow the feeding guide on the packaging and adjust the amount to suit your cat’s weight, age and activity level.

Age and specific needs

Cat food for adult cats is often labelled “adult” or with a similar term. There are also varieties with specific feeding advice for neutered cats, such as Farmina N&D Pumpkin Neutered Cat Lamb and Farmina N&D Prime Neutered Cat Chicken. The product information labels these as complete food for neutered cats.

That doesn’t mean every neutered cat needs the same amount. Check your cat’s current weight and use the portion table as a starting point. If your cat has a medical condition or persistent symptoms, it’s better to seek advice from a vet than to change its food on your own.

Wet cat food or dry cat food?

Wet cat food typically contains a lot of moisture and is often sold in 85-gram portions or tins. Once opened, follow the storage advice and refrigerate any leftovers as directed on the packaging. Products such as Gourmet Gold Mousse and Sheba Classic Pâté are examples of portion-sized packs for adult cats.

Dry cat food is easy to measure and keeps for longer after opening if stored in a tightly sealed container. Farmina, Iams and Ziwi Peak offer varieties with different protein sources and recipes. Always provide fresh drinking water and introduce new food gradually, for example over several days.

Frequently asked questions about cat food

What’s the difference between complete and complementary cat food?

Complete cat food is intended as a daily main food according to the product information. Complementary food, such as certain cat treats, is an extra and doesn’t necessarily provide all the nutrients needed for a full day.

How long does opened wet cat food keep?

Always follow the label. Some products state that leftovers can be kept refrigerated for up to two days. Use a clean, sealed container and don’t leave wet food at room temperature for longer than necessary.

Is premium cat food automatically suitable for every cat?

No. “Premium” is mainly a marketing term and doesn’t replace checking the ingredients, nutritional values, age category and portion guide. Compare the product details with your cat’s needs.
