Choosing car lights: how to find the right bulbs for your car

Buying new car lights seems simple: choose a fitting, select LED or halogen, then replace the old bulb. In practice, problems often arise because the fitting is wrong, there isn’t enough room behind the headlight or a warning appears on the dashboard. A bulb with a high stated light output won’t necessarily produce a good beam pattern either.

This buying guide will help you compare your options. You’ll find things to consider when choosing LED car headlights, halogen bulbs, rear lights and car interior lighting, along with a few products for different needs.

Common pitfalls when choosing car lights

1. The fitting is wrong

H7, H4, H11, HIR2 9012 and D3S/D3R are not interchangeable codes. An H7 bulb won’t simply fit an H4 socket. So, check the following first:

  • your car’s handbook;
  • the type number on the original bulb;
  • the fitting on the housing;
  • your vehicle details in the product information.

If you’re unsure, it’s best to remove the old bulb and check its number before ordering.

2. “Plug-and-play” doesn’t always mean trouble-free

Plug-and-play car lighting usually means you won’t need to alter any wiring. However, the bulb may be too long for the headlight housing, a fan may catch on the dust cover or the vehicle may display an error message.

CANbus LED car bulbs can reduce the chance of a warning or flickering, but they’re not guaranteed to work with every car model. Some vehicles need an additional decoder. After installation, check the dipped beam, main beam, indicators and any dashboard warnings too.

3. A high lumen rating doesn’t tell you much about the beam pattern

Brands sometimes quote very high lumen values or a percentage increase compared with halogen. According to the brands’ own product information, these figures are stated under specific conditions. In practice, the position of the LED chip, the reflector and the headlight alignment are just as important.

A poor beam pattern can create dark areas or dazzle oncoming drivers. So, have your headlights checked and aligned after a retrofit. Also check whether the bulb you’ve chosen is permitted for use on public roads under Dutch regulations. Look for relevant approvals and markings, and check the requirements for your vehicle and lighting function.

Important specifications to check

Fitting and application

Don’t use the fitting information for headlights alone. An H7 LED bulb is often used for dipped or main beam, while H4 LED bulbs typically combine both functions in one bulb. H11 LED bulbs are often used for dipped beam or fog lights. HIR2 9012 LED bulbs have their own connection and aren’t suitable as replacements for H11 bulbs.

For xenon or HID systems, D3S D3R LED bulbs are designed to replace a specific type of HID bulb. According to KATUR’s product information, these bulbs are only suitable for headlight units originally designed for HID, not for halogen or standard LED units.

Cooling, voltage and space

LED bulbs generate heat at the rear. So, check:

  • the type of cooling: fan, heatsink or heat pipe;
  • the available space behind the bulb;
  • the vehicle’s nominal voltage, usually 12 volts for passenger cars;
  • the IP rating, such as IP65 or IP68, if stated;
  • whether there’s an external driver or decoder.

A fan can dissipate heat effectively, but it also makes the bulb mechanically more complex. A passive heatsink operates silently, but needs enough airflow and space.

Light colour and intended use

A colour temperature of around 6000 to 6500 K looks cool white. That doesn’t automatically mean the road will be better lit. H7 halogen headlight bulbs typically produce a warmer white or yellow light. They’re often a practical choice if you want a straightforward replacement without modifications.

Interior lighting has different requirements. RGB ambient car lighting and LED ambient lighting for cars are mainly about colour options, controls and installation. For light strips, check their length, cut points, Bluetooth app and how the cables can be routed around doors, pedals and seats.

Frequently asked questions about car lights

Can I simply replace halogen bulbs with LED bulbs?

Not always. Check the fitting, the space in the headlight, CANbus compatibility and whether the bulb is approved for use on public roads. A bulb may fit mechanically but still trigger an error message or produce a poor beam pattern.

How long do LED car bulbs last?

Lifespan varies by product and conditions of use. Brands sometimes quote 30,000 to 60,000 hours. According to the brands’ own product information, these are stated figures; heat, vibration, moisture and the quality of the cooling system all affect the actual lifespan. A well-fitting bulb with effective heat dissipation is more important than a high figure on the packaging alone.

What lighting is suitable for the interior?

T10/W5W bulbs are suitable for straightforward replacements if your car uses that fitting. For colour accents, you can choose RGB ambient car lighting or a complete LED strip set. When buying universal car lights, always check the voltage, strip length and controller position. Make sure the installation doesn’t obstruct visibility, controls or your car’s safety systems.
