Choosing car LED lighting: how to find the right bulbs without making an expensive mistake

Anyone looking for car LED lighting will soon come across terms such as “plug-and-play”, “CANbus”, “300% brighter” and a lifespan of tens of thousands of hours. These specifications can be useful, but they do not automatically mean that a bulb is suitable for your vehicle. The fitting, light distribution, space inside the headlight and local regulations ultimately determine whether an upgrade is a sensible choice.

Common pitfalls with LED lighting for cars

1. Not checking the fitting

An H4 bulb is not the same as an H7, H11 or H1. HB3 9005 LED bulbs and 9006 bulbs also have their own connection. So check the following first:

  • the original bulb number in the manual;
  • the marking on the old bulb;
  • the vehicle details provided by the manufacturer;
  • the available space behind the headlight.

A product title containing several fitting names does not mean that one bulb supports all of these fittings at once. For example, an H8/H9/H11 bulb will only fit if your vehicle actually uses one of those connections.

2. Confusing “plug-and-play” with trouble-free installation

Plug-and-play car bulbs generally do not require cutting or soldering. However, installation problems can still occur. A fan, heatsink or additional driver may come into contact with the dust cap. Some vehicles may also experience a warning message, flickering or radio interference.

CANbus LED bulbs are designed to help reduce warning messages in certain vehicle systems. This is not a guarantee that they will work fault-free in every car. Models with a particularly sensitive electrical system may require an additional CANbus decoder. After installation, always check the dipped beam, main beam, indicators and any fog light function.

3. Looking only at lumens or colour temperature

A high lumen figure on the product page does not tell you how the light beam will perform in your headlight reflector or lens. Incorrect light distribution can create dark areas or dazzle oncoming drivers. According to product information from various brands, their one-to-one designs are intended to imitate the position of a halogen filament; the actual result also depends on the headlight and correct installation.

A colour temperature of around 6000K to 6500K produces a cool white appearance. This is primarily a choice of appearance and light colour, not independent proof of better illumination in rain or fog.

The key specifications to check

Fitting and application

Choose the fitting that matches the original bulb:

  • H4 LED bulbs: often combine main and dipped beam in a single bulb;
  • H7 LED bulbs: usually provide one lighting function per bulb;
  • H11 LED bulbs: often used for dipped beam or fog lights, depending on the vehicle;
  • H1 LED bulbs: a separate fitting used for headlight functions, among other applications;
  • HB3 9005 LED bulbs: check both the fitting and vehicle application;
  • LED fog lights: pay particular attention to the light beam and the function for which the bulb has been approved.

Also check whether you need a set of two. Some products are sold individually, while others are sold in pairs.

Cooling and available space

LEDs do not convert all electrical energy into light, so heat dissipation remains important. Products use a fan, aluminium housing, cooling fins or a combination of these. A fan can be efficient, but makes the bulb longer and adds a moving part. A fanless model may be quieter, but must dissipate heat in another way.

Before buying, inspect the space behind the original bulb and check that the dust cap will still close. A water- or dust-resistance classification, such as IP65 or IP68, describes the product housing according to the product information. It does not replace correct sealing of the complete headlight.

Legislation and adjustment

Before use, check the Dutch vehicle and inspection regulations. Not every LED retrofit is automatically permitted in every headlight housing. After installation, the light beam must be checked and, if necessary, adjusted. This helps prevent unnecessary inconvenience for oncoming drivers.

Additional requirements concerning visibility and breakdown equipment apply to lorries and commercial vehicles. According to the product information, the OSRAM Truck Flare TA19 is intended as a portable warning light. The stated requirement under §53a StVZO applies to vehicles weighing 3.5 tonnes or more in Germany. For use in the Netherlands and other countries, you should check the local regulations.

Looking for more options?

We have put together a complete, up-to-date list of products that fully meet these strict selection criteria and the applicable European safety regulations.

Installation and checks after purchase

Only work when the bulbs are switched off and have cooled down. Fit the LED bulb without touching the chip or fan, and check the sealing ring. Then test all lighting modes. Look out for:

  1. No warning message or irregular flashing on the dashboard.
  2. A clear, symmetrical light beam.
  3. A securely closed dust cap and no loose wiring.
  4. Correct headlight adjustment.

Professional installation is advisable for complete LED rear lights when sealing, alignment or electrical connections are complicated. For LED fog lights, remember that a bright beam is not automatically suitable for foggy weather.

Frequently asked questions about car LED lighting

Are LED headlights permitted in the Netherlands?

This depends on the vehicle, headlight housing, light source and applicable approval. Check the Dutch regulations and the vehicle manufacturer’s information before replacing halogen bulbs with LEDs. Have the beam checked after installation.

How long do LED bulbs last?

Brands sometimes quote 50,000 or 60,000 hours. According to the brands’ own product information, these are stated values; actual service life is affected by heat, voltage, moisture, operating time and the quality of the vehicle wiring.

Do LED lights use less power?

An LED bulb may use a different amount of electrical power from a halogen bulb for a comparable lighting function. Therefore, compare the stated wattage per bulb or per set. A CANbus system may require additional electronics, which means that total power consumption and installation requirements can differ.
