How to choose a jump starter for your car: avoid buying the wrong one

A flat 12V battery often happens at the worst possible time: in a car park, during a camping trip or just before you need to get to work. A car jump starter can get you moving again without having to call a breakdown service straight away. However, not every car jump starter is suitable for every vehicle, and some do not deliver what the packaging promises in real-world use.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • A high peak current does not tell you everything. The stated amp rating is often only a brief peak value. Suitability for your engine, the starting current and the quality of the cables are at least as important.
  • Battery capacity is not always stated in comparable terms. A value in mAh may refer to the internal battery voltage, while the usable capacity is lower. So also check the Wh rating, stated starting current and number of hours needed to charge the device.
  • Extra functions can make the casing larger and heavier. A jump starter with a compressor is useful for a soft tyre, but it generally takes up more space than a compact emergency car jump starter without a pump.

Which specifications should you check?

1. Starting current and engine compatibility

First, check whether the portable jump starter is suitable for your engine. Manufacturers usually state the maximum engine capacity for petrol and diesel engines. A diesel engine generally requires more starting power than a petrol engine.

Pay attention to the following details:

  • Peak current: a brief maximum value, such as 1,500A or 3,000A.
  • Starting current: the current supplied while starting, where this is listed separately.
  • Engine support: for example, petrol engines up to 6.0 litres and diesel engines up to 4.0 litres.
  • Vehicle voltage: a 12V jump starter is designed for most cars, SUVs, motorbikes and vans.

Do not interpret the figures more broadly than the manufacturer states. A model for 12V vehicles is not automatically suitable for a 24V lorry. Also check the manual for your car, motorhome or boat.

2. Safety features and cables

A good car jump starter should offer more than just a battery and two clamps. Look for protection against reverse polarity, short circuits, overheating, overloading and excessive voltage. A warning signal or status light can also help you connect it correctly.

According to the product information provided by the respective brands, several models feature multiple layers of protection. This is a product claim made by the manufacturer and is not a guarantee that every use will be risk-free. Always check the connection sequence:

  1. Switch off the car and check that the jump starter is sufficiently charged.
  2. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal (+).
  3. Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal or a suitable unpainted metal earth point, as specified in the manual.
  4. Wait for the ready signal and start the engine briefly.
  5. After starting, remove the black clamp first, followed by the red clamp.

Do not use a car battery booster with a damaged, leaking or frozen battery. A jump starter also does not replace a faulty battery or an alternator problem.

3. Capacity, size and extra functions

A jump starter with power bank can charge phones, tablets or other USB devices. Check the number of ports and the output power. A 5V/2A USB output is suitable for basic devices; fast-charging ports can deliver more power, but only when your device and cable support it.

A jump starter with compressor is worth considering if you also want to inflate car tyres, bicycle tyres or inflatable camping equipment. Check the following:

  • the maximum pressure in psi or bar;
  • the length of the air hose;
  • whether a pressure gauge is included;
  • the stated inflation time;
  • the weight and storage space required.

Do not store a lithium jump starter permanently in a hot car or in damp conditions. According to product information from several brands, regularly recharging the device — for example, every two to six months depending on the model — is important to keep it ready for use. Always follow the supplied manual.

Frequently asked questions about car jump starters

Can I use a jump starter for a diesel car?

Only if the model is suitable for your diesel engine according to the product specifications. Check the maximum engine capacity and the required 12V voltage. A diesel engine may require more starting current than a comparable petrol engine.

How long does a portable jump starter last?

Its lifespan depends on storage, temperature, charging frequency and usage. Charge the device according to the manual and check its charge level before setting off on a journey. Store the jump starter in a dry place and do not leave it in a very hot car for extended periods. Replace the device if the battery swells or the casing or cables are damaged.

Is a jump starter cheaper than breakdown cover?

That depends on your policy, subscription and usage. A jump starter is a one-off purchase and can also serve as a power bank or torch. It is not a replacement for breakdown cover in the event of a faulty alternator, damaged battery or other engine fault. So first check what your vehicle needs, then choose a model with suitable capacity and safety features.
