Choosing a car jump starter: how to avoid a poor buy on the road

A flat battery often happens at the worst possible moment: in a car park, during a camping trip or just before you need to leave for work. A car jump starter can, under certain conditions, help you start a suitable 12V battery without assistance. However, not every model is suitable for every vehicle or use case.

So don’t focus solely on a high amp rating. The stated peak current, engine size, battery voltage, charge level and safety features all determine whether a car jump starter is practical for your needs.

Common pitfalls when choosing a car jump starter

1. Looking only at the highest amp rating

Manufacturers often state the maximum peak current. On its own, this figure does not tell you how much starting power you will have in practice. Also check:

  • whether the device is suitable for 12V vehicles;
  • the maximum engine capacity specified for petrol and diesel engines;
  • whether a separate boost function is required for a very flat battery;
  • the stated starting and charging current.

A compact car generally has different requirements from a diesel van, SUV, campervan or light commercial vehicle. A 12V jump starter for a smaller petrol engine is not automatically suitable for a large diesel engine.

2. Confusing capacity with starting power

Battery capacity, measured in mAh, indicates how much energy the internal battery can store, but it is not the only factor determining whether the engine will start. Discharge current, cables, clamps and temperature also play a role. Also look at the difference between nominal capacity and marketing capacity.

For example, the Porbi S306 is listed with a capacity of 12.800 mAh and a stated nominal output capacity of 7.200 mAh. This is useful information: the two figures do not mean the same thing.

3. Using extra features as a substitute for basic checks

A jump starter with compressor, LCD screen, torch or power bank can be useful, but these features cannot make an unsuitable starting device suitable for your vehicle. A compressor also uses a lot of energy and can become hot. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on rest periods and use.

Which specifications should you check?

Starting current and engine type

Compare the specifications with your vehicle’s engine. Examples from the product descriptions:

  • EAFC specifies 2000A peak current, supporting engines up to 6.0 litres petrol and 4.0 litres diesel.
  • GOOLOO GP2000 lists 2000A peak current, for up to 8.0-litre petrol and 6.0-litre diesel engines.
  • GOOLOO GP4000 lists 4000A peak current, for petrol and diesel engines up to 10.0 litres.
  • YaberAuto YA60 lists 8000A peak current, for all petrol engines and diesel engines up to 12.0 litres.

These figures come from the product descriptions and do not guarantee that every engine will start in all conditions. According to the brands’ product specifications, temperature, battery condition and correct connection can affect performance.

Battery voltage and vehicle compatibility

Check your car or motorbike’s manual to confirm whether it uses a 12V lead-acid battery. A portable jump starter is not intended as a universal solution for electric vehicles, hybrid systems or other voltages unless the manufacturer explicitly states otherwise.

For a campervan, caravan, boat, tractor or lorry, check whether the jump starter is suitable for the specific type of vehicle. A high peak current is no substitute for checking the battery voltage and engine size.

Safety clamps and maintenance

Look for features such as:

  • reverse-polarity protection;
  • short-circuit and overload protection;
  • overheat protection;
  • clear status indicators;
  • sturdy, insulated clamps;
  • cables of sufficient length with a reliable connection.

According to the product descriptions, the EAFC, GOOLOO and ACEZUK models, among others, have multiple electronic safety features. Treat these as an additional safeguard, not as permission to ignore the connection sequence.

Fully charge a car battery booster before using it for the first time. Many suppliers recommend recharging the device regularly during long-term storage, for example every two to six months. Store it in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and not inside an extremely hot car.

How to use a car jump starter safely

  1. Switch off the car and check that the jump starter has sufficient charge.
  2. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal.
  3. Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal or a suitable unpainted metal earth point, as instructed in the manual.
  4. Check the status indicator before starting.
  5. Start the engine briefly and observe the maximum starting time specified in the manual.
  6. Disconnect the clamps as soon as the engine is running, then recharge the device after use.

Do not use an emergency starter battery if the battery is visibly leaking, damaged or frozen. Do not allow the clamps to touch each other and do not use the device with a voltage other than the one for which it is intended.

Frequently asked questions about portable jump starters

Can I use a jump starter for both diesel and petrol engines?

You can with models whose manufacturer specifies both engine types. Always check the maximum engine capacity for petrol and diesel separately. A model suitable for a 12V petrol engine is not automatically suitable for a diesel engine with the same capacity.

How long does a jump starter stay charged?

This varies according to the battery, storage temperature and usage. The maintenance instructions for various models recommend recharging the device periodically when it is not in use. Check the charge level before a long journey and recharge the jump starter after a starting attempt.

Does a jump starter use a lot of electricity?

Charging is usually carried out via USB-C, an adapter or, on some models, a 12V car charger. The electricity cost of a single charge is generally limited, but a compressor or laptop output uses more energy than charging just a phone. Before buying, consider the charging time, capacity and extra features you want.
