Choosing a car jump starter: how to find safe roadside starting assistance

A flat car battery often happens at the worst possible moment: before leaving for work, in a car park or during a holiday with a caravan or motorhome. A car jump starter can get you moving again without relying on another car and a set of jump leads.

However, not every portable jump starter is suitable for every car. Marketing claims about thousands of amps, large battery capacities and a 150 PSI compressor only mean something if they match your vehicle and intended use. Below, you’ll find out which specifications matter and which common pitfalls to avoid.

Three common pitfalls when choosing a car battery booster

1. Looking only at the peak current

A high peak current, such as 3000A or 8000A, sounds impressive. However, this is a short-term maximum value. Also check the stated engine size for petrol and diesel engines and whether the device is suitable for a 12V system.

A large diesel engine generally requires more starting power than a compact petrol engine. For a small city car, a 1200A or 1500A model may be sufficient according to the product specifications. For an SUV, van, motorhome or boat, choosing a model with extra capacity is more sensible.

2. Confusing battery capacity with starting power

A jump starter with 20,000mAh does not automatically have more starting power than a model with 10,000mAh. Capacity mainly determines how much energy is available for multiple starting attempts or charging phones. The peak current and starting current, together with the battery voltage, determine whether the device is suitable for your vehicle.

Also pay attention to how capacity is stated. Some manufacturers quote the theoretical battery capacity, while others provide a lower nominal or usable capacity.

3. Assessing a compressor based on PSI alone

A jump starter with compressor is useful when your tyre pressure is low, but a maximum pressure of 150 PSI does not tell you how quickly the pump will inflate a car tyre. Also look at airflow, automatic shut-off, whether it has a pressure display and the maximum operating time.

A compressor can become hot during use. Always follow the rest periods stated in the manual and do not use the pump as a substitute for a standard workshop compressor.

Which specifications should you check?

Suitable for your vehicle

First check:

  • Voltage: most models in this category are designed for 12V vehicles. Do not use them with a 24V system unless the manufacturer explicitly states that they are compatible.
  • Engine type: check the separate limits for petrol and diesel engines.
  • Vehicle type: car, motorbike, SUV, van, motorhome, boat or agricultural vehicle.
  • Battery type and procedure: some models are intended only for 12V lead-acid batteries.

A car jump starter can help with a flat or weak battery, but it will not resolve a faulty alternator, damaged battery or fuel problem. If the battery is leaking, bulging or visibly damaged, do not use the jump starter.

Safety features and cables

Objectively verifiable features include reverse-polarity protection, short-circuit protection, overload protection and overheating protection. Also check that the clamps are sturdy, the cables are long enough and the connections are clearly marked.

Product descriptions sometimes mention several layers of protection. Treat these as manufacturer specifications and still follow the manual. A safety feature does not make an incorrect connection harmless.

Before use:

  1. Fully charge the jump starter according to the manual.
  2. Switch the device off before connecting the clamps.
  3. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal (+).
  4. Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal or a suitable unpainted earth point, depending on the instructions.
  5. Start the engine briefly; avoid prolonged cranking.
  6. After starting, remove the black clamp first and then the red clamp, unless the manual specifies a different order.
  7. Recharge the car jump starter after use.

Size, weight and storage

A 330-gram device fits easily in a glove compartment, but it may have fewer extra features than a model weighing around 1 kilogram. Do not store a lithium jump starter in direct sunlight or an extremely hot car for extended periods. Check the charge level every few months. According to their product information, some manufacturers recommend charging the device every two to six months.

When buying, also look for:

  • a clear charge indicator or LCD display;
  • USB outputs if you want to use the jump starter as a power bank for your car;
  • an LED light with steady, flashing and SOS modes;
  • a sturdy storage case;
  • a charging cable, adapter and jump leads included in the box;
  • warranty terms and the seller’s contact details.

Frequently asked questions about portable jump starters

Can I use a jump starter with any car?

No. Check that your car has a 12V battery and compare the engine size with the manufacturer’s limit. A jump starter for petrol and diesel engines is not automatically suitable for every engine size or for 24V systems.

How long does a car jump starter remain usable?

This depends on the battery type, storage temperature and maintenance. Recharge the device periodically, even if you do not use it. Store it in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Always follow the manufacturer’s charging and storage instructions.

Do I still need jump leads if I have a jump starter?

A jump starter can supply power independently, whereas traditional jump leads require a second vehicle. For extra peace of mind, you can carry both. Check each product to see whether smart clamps, a charging cable and a storage case are included.
