How to choose a car jump starter: avoid buying the wrong one when you're on the road

A flat car battery often happens at the worst possible time: in a car park, during a camping trip or just before setting off for work. A car jump starter can provide a practical portable starting aid in these situations. You can use it as a temporary power source to start a 12V vehicle without relying on another car.

However, a high amp rating does not tell you everything. Some buyers focus only on the peak current, while the connection, battery capacity and vehicle compatibility are just as important. Below, you'll find out what to look for in a car battery jump starter and which models are suited to different situations.

Three pitfalls when buying a car jump starter

1. Looking only at the highest amp rating

Packaging often features a high peak current, such as 2,000 A, 4,000 A or more. This is a short-term maximum value and is not the same as the continuous starting current. Always check which engine size and engine type the device is suitable for according to the product information.

A compact 12V jump starter for a small petrol car has different requirements from a jump starter for a diesel SUV, van, motorhome or boat.

2. Confusing battery capacity with starting power

A specification such as 10,000 mAh or 20,000 mAh describes the capacity of the internal battery. It does not directly indicate how much starting power your car will receive. In addition, the actual usable capacity may be lower than the stated value.

You should therefore check both sets of information:

  • Peak current and starting current for starting the engine.
  • Battery capacity for the number of possible starts and charging devices.
  • USB and USB-C outputs if you also want to use the jump starter as a power bank.

3. Overlooking safety features and maintenance

A car battery booster is connected to a battery using metal clamps. Protection against reverse polarity, short circuits, overheating and overcurrent is therefore important. These features do not replace careful use: always check the positive and negative terminals and follow the instructions.

A jump starter left in the boot for months also needs to remain charged. Many product manuals recommend charging the device every two to three months. An empty internal battery won't help when your vehicle battery fails.

Which specifications are important?

Check 12V compatibility and engine size

Most portable jump starters in this selection are designed for 12V vehicles. This may include cars, SUVs, motorbikes, motorhomes, boats, tractors and other vehicles, but the maximum petrol and diesel engine sizes vary by model.

Pay attention to the wording in the product description. For example, according to the stated specifications, the GOOLOO GP4000 is suitable for petrol and diesel engines up to 10.0 litres. The GOOLOO GE1500 is listed for up to 6.0 litres petrol and 4.0 litres diesel. So don't automatically choose a more powerful model if you only have a compact petrol car, but do allow sufficient headroom if you use it with a diesel vehicle, motorhome or van.

Look at the clamps, cables and indicators

Sturdy, fully metal clamps can be practical for regular use. A smart cable with status lights or an LCD screen can indicate whether the connection is correct. This makes the procedure clearer, but always check the terminals yourself.

A suitable car jump starter should ideally have:

  • protection against reverse polarity;
  • protection against short circuits and overcurrent;
  • a clear charge indicator;
  • cables of sufficient length and well-insulated handles;
  • a storage case to keep the clamps and cables together.

Decide which extra features you will actually use

A jump starter power bank can charge a phone, tablet, GPS or camera while you're on the road. A jump starter with LED light provides extra illumination when checking under the bonnet or dealing with a breakdown on a dark road. Some models also have a compressor.

A jump starter with compressor is useful if you need to top up a tyre while travelling. Check that the stated maximum pressure, hose and supplied nozzles are suitable for your needs. A compressor is intended for inflation, not as a replacement for professional tyre servicing in the event of damage.

How to use a car jump starter safely

  1. Fully charge the jump starter before using it for the first time.
  2. Check that your vehicle has a 12V battery and falls within the stated engine limit.
  3. Switch off the engine and all electrical accessories.
  4. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal and the black clamp to the negative terminal or a suitable unpainted metal earth point, as specified in the instructions.
  5. Start the car within the stated time. Keep each starting attempt brief and wait between attempts to allow the device to cool down.
  6. Once the engine has started, remove the black clamp first, followed by the red clamp, unless the instructions specify a different order.

Do not use an emergency car starter if the battery is visibly leaking, cracked or frozen. A jump starter cannot repair a worn or faulty battery. Have the vehicle checked afterwards if the battery quickly goes flat again.

Frequently asked questions

Can a car jump starter start a completely flat battery?

This depends on the model, the condition of the battery and the temperature. Some devices have a boost function for very low battery voltage. Check the instructions and only use this function when the connection is correct. Do not attempt to start a vehicle if the battery is damaged or leaking.

How long does a jump starter remain usable?

Its lifespan depends on storage, charging frequency and usage. Store the device in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Charge it periodically according to the instructions, even when you are not using it. Check the charge level before a long journey.

Is a jump starter with a compressor worth the extra cost?

It can be particularly worthwhile if you regularly take long journeys, go camping or enjoy outdoor activities. If you never use the compressor, a simpler model with a power bank and LED light will probably be more practical. As well as the price, compare the weight, cables, capacity and stated vehicle compatibility.
