Buying a car jump starter: how to choose a portable jump starter for your car

A flat battery often strikes at the worst possible moment: on a cold morning, at a campsite or just before setting off abroad. With a car jump starter, you can sometimes start a 12V vehicle yourself, without a second car or traditional jump leads.

However, not every car battery booster is suitable for every vehicle. Marketing often focuses on a high amp rating, but other features are just as important. Read on to find out which specifications matter, which pitfalls to avoid and which type of portable jump starter is right for you.

Three common pitfalls when choosing a car jump starter

1. Looking only at the peak current

A rating such as 1500A, 3000A or 8000A sounds clear-cut, but peak current doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s also important to check which engine type and capacity the manufacturer says the device supports. A petrol engine generally needs different starting support from a diesel engine.

So always check:

  • Whether the device is suitable for 12V systems.
  • The maximum engine capacity for petrol and diesel.
  • Whether your vehicle type is listed, such as an SUV, campervan, van, motorbike or lorry.
  • Whether a separate boost function is needed for a very flat battery.

A diesel jump starter for a large commercial vehicle has different requirements from a compact car jump starter for a city car.

2. Confusing high battery capacity with starting power

Capacity in mAh mainly indicates how much energy is available for USB devices and multiple starting attempts. It’s not the same as starting current. A jump starter with a power bank may have a large capacity, but still be less suitable for a large diesel engine than a model with a higher starting current.

As well as mAh, check the stated peak current and, if listed, the starting current. Also look at the charging time and recommended charging frequency. Some models need to be recharged every two to three months if they’re not used for a long time.

3. Underestimating safety features and storage

A car battery booster contains powerful lithium cells. Protection against reverse polarity, short circuits, overheating, overcharging and sparks is therefore important in practice. A display or warning light can help you spot an incorrect connection, but it doesn’t replace the instructions.

Store your portable jump starter somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. Don’t use it if you see a leak, a swollen battery or a damaged casing. Also check whether clamps, cables, a storage case and a charging cable are included.

Which specifications should you compare?

Starting power and vehicle compatibility

A mid-range 12V jump starter may be enough for an ordinary petrol car. For an SUV, campervan, tractor or diesel van, it’s sensible to choose one with a wider stated engine range. The figures below are product specifications provided by the respective brands; always check your vehicle’s manual before buying.

According to the product information, the GOOLOO GE1500 is suitable for petrol engines up to 6.0 litres and diesel engines up to 4.0 litres. The manufacturer states that the GOOLOO GP2000 supports engines up to 8.0 litres for petrol and 6.0 litres for diesel. Models with higher stated limits are available for larger engines, but a higher figure doesn’t guarantee that a faulty or completely damaged battery can be started.

Size, weight and cable quality

A jump starter kept in your car permanently needs to cope with changes in temperature and be easy to store. A very compact model will fit in a glove compartment, while a heavier device often has longer cables, larger clamps or extra connections.

Look out for:

  • Weight and dimensions.
  • The length and thickness of the jump leads.
  • Sturdy clamps.
  • A clear charge indicator or LCD display.
  • A protective storage case.

A lightweight model weighing a few hundred grams can be handy for motorbikes and small cars. For lorries or campervans, range and robust connections usually matter more.

Extra features: power bank, light and compressor

A jump starter with a power bank can charge phones, tablets or sat-nav devices. Check how many USB ports it has and what output they provide. An LED light with steady, flashing or SOS modes is useful if you break down in the dark.

A jump starter with a compressor combines a jump starter with a tyre inflator. This is useful for travellers and campers, but check the maximum pressure, hose, included adaptors and cooling time. A compressor is designed to inflate tyres, not repair a puncture.

How to use a car jump starter safely

  1. Fully charge the jump starter before using it for the first time.
  2. Check that your vehicle has a 12V battery.
  3. Switch off the engine and electrical devices.
  4. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal.
  5. Connect the black clamp to a suitable unpainted metal earth point, unless the instructions say otherwise.
  6. Start the engine within the stated time, usually after a few seconds.
  7. Remove the black clamp first, then the red one.
  8. Let the jump starter cool down and recharge it after use.

Never use the device on a damaged, leaking or frozen battery. If in doubt, consult the instructions or contact your breakdown service.

Frequently asked questions about portable jump starters

How long does a car jump starter last?

Its lifespan depends on storage temperature, charging habits and how often it’s used. Recharge the device periodically, following the instructions. Manufacturers offer different warranty periods and maintenance advice, so compare this information before buying.

Can a jump starter start a diesel car?

Only if the model is rated for it. Check the maximum diesel engine capacity, the recommended starting current and whether your vehicle uses a 12V system. A petrol jump starter isn’t automatically suitable for every diesel engine.

How much does it cost to use a car jump starter?

The electricity needed to recharge it is usually minimal. The main ongoing costs come from replacing the battery or charging cable over time. A model with a power bank, LED light or compressor can also replace several devices, but only choose those features if you’ll actually use them.
