Choosing a camping mat: how to find the right sleeping mat for camping, travel and guests

A camping mat needs to do more than just feel soft in the shop. On a cold campsite floor, you quickly notice whether the mat insulates well enough; in a small tent, the size turns out to be more important than you expected; and a battery-powered pump can be less practical on the road than a hand pump. Likewise, a strikingly low price says little about its lifespan or ease of use.

When you buy a camping mat, these are the main pitfalls to watch out for:

  • Confusion between height and insulation: a thick inflatable airbed feels comfortable, but the product height doesn’t automatically tell you how well it protects against cold ground.
  • Incomplete pump information: check whether the pump is USB, mains or battery powered, and whether the required power supply is included.
  • Unrealistic sizing: the dimensions of an inflated mat are not always the same as its packed size. So measure your tent space, luggage and storage space at home too.
  • Not enough attention to material: PVC, TPU and polyester have different properties when it comes to weight, noise, water resistance and repair.

Which specifications matter for a camping mat?

1. Size, height and weight capacity

First, choose between a single sleeping mat, a double sleeping mat or a compact model for children. A wide camping sleeping mat gives you more room to move, but also takes up more space in the tent. For two adults, a mat of around 200 x 140 cm is roomier than a queen-size airbed of 203 x 152 cm, but both need enough floor area.

Alongside the dimensions, also pay attention to:

  • the height after inflation;
  • the product weight;
  • the maximum weight capacity;
  • the dimensions when folded;
  • the width of the tent or guest room.

A tall airbed is especially handy as a temporary guest bed, because getting in and out can be easier. For backpackers and hikers, a lightweight sleeping mat with a small pack size is what counts. A double model weighing 1.6 to 1.7 kg can be suitable for car camping, but is less practical for long walking trips.

2. Insulation and sleeping comfort

An insulated camping mat prevents body heat from escaping quickly into the ground. With sleeping mats, this is sometimes indicated by an R-value. The higher that value, the more resistance to heat transfer the mat offers, according to the stated product specification. However, not every airbed mentions an R-value.

So also check:

  • whether the mat is intended for summer, three-season or four-season use;
  • whether the underside is suitable for a tent floor;
  • whether a separate groundsheet or protective layer is needed;
  • whether the air chambers provide support for side sleepers;
  • whether a built-in pillow is part of the design.

A self-inflating sleeping mat typically combines foam and air. A standard inflatable airbed consists mainly of air chambers and can therefore feel different. According to the manufacturers’ own product information, some Tritech models are designed to hold their shape and firmness better during the night. Treat this as a product specification, not a guarantee that no pressure loss will occur.

3. Pump, valve and maintenance

An airbed with a built-in pump can be handy for festivals, guests or a campsite with electricity. With a USB pump, you need to check in advance whether an adapter, power bank or car charger is available. A built-in battery pump works more independently, but requires batteries that may not be included.

Also look out for:

  • the stated inflation time;
  • a quick-release valve;
  • the included pump or cable;
  • a repair kit;
  • the cleaning instructions;
  • storage away from sharp objects or heat sources.

Do not inflate a mat beyond the manufacturer’s recommended pressure. Check the valve before each use and look for any damage. A mat that slowly loses air may still seem usable when you go to bed, but will offer less support by the next morning.

Frequently asked questions about camping mats

Is a camping mat suitable for cold nights?

That depends on the insulation value, the material and the ground underneath. A thick airbed is not automatically warm. In cold weather, use a suitable insulated camping mat or a sleeping mat with a stated R-value. Also place the mat on a tent floor or protective groundsheet.

How long does an inflatable airbed last?

The lifespan depends on the material, weight load, inflation frequency and storage. Allow an airbed to dry completely before folding it away. Store it in a cool, dry place, away from sharp objects. Check the valve and seams regularly. A repair kit can temporarily fix small leaks, but you should not continue using damaged material if the mat loses its shape or weight-bearing capacity.

What does it cost to use an airbed with a built-in pump?

With a USB model, this depends on the power source you use, such as a power bank, car charger or mains adapter. With a battery pump, the cost of batteries depends on how often you inflate and deflate the mat. A hand pump needs no electricity or batteries, but does require more effort. So don’t just look at the purchase price – also consider what power and accessories you’ll need on the road.
