Choosing a cabin suitcase: a practical guide to size, weight and airline rules

A cabin suitcase may seem easy to choose at first glance. However, small differences in dimensions, wheel type and material can determine whether you’re allowed to take your bag into the cabin without any problems. With budget deals in particular, the stated measurements aren’t always clear: sometimes the wheels and handle aren’t included, or only the capacity is highlighted.

Watch out for these common pitfalls:

  • “Suitable for every airline”: baggage rules vary by airline, ticket and fare type. A suitcase allowed as hand luggage on easyJet won’t necessarily fall within Ryanair’s free baggage allowance.
  • Capacity given without external dimensions: a 40-litre suitcase may still be too large for the cabin once you include its wheels, frame and handle.
  • Lightweight but with little practical protection: a lower weight is useful, but a very soft or thin construction may offer less support for fragile items.
  • 360-degree wheels as a one-size-fits-all solution: four spinner wheels roll smoothly on flat floors, but two wheels may be more stable on uneven pavements or cobblestones.

Which specifications should you check before buying?

1. External dimensions, including wheels and handle

Always check the full external dimensions. The requirements for a suitcase for Ryanair, easyJet or British Airways aren’t the same everywhere. Also check the difference between:

  • a small personal bag that goes under the seat;
  • permitted hand luggage with Priority;
  • a larger cabin bag that may need to be added separately.

A suitcase measuring 55 x 40 x 20 cm isn’t the same as one measuring 56 x 45 x 25 cm. Check your airline’s current rules before you travel. The product description may say that a model falls within certain dimensions, but final acceptance is determined by the airline and your ticket.

2. Weight and usable capacity

A lightweight suitcase leaves more weight allowance for clothes and electronics when there’s a limit. Check both the empty weight and the layout. A model with a capacity of around 30 to 40 litres is suitable for many weekend trips, but the usable space also depends on the inner panels, zipped compartments and handle housing.

For example, the Kono soft-shell cabin suitcase has a stated capacity of around 33 litres and weighs 1,46 to 1,7 kg. Its external dimensions are 53 x 36 x 18 cm. This makes it an appealing lightweight suitcase, but still check that its size is suitable for your ticket.

3. Material, wheels and security

A hard-shell suitcase made from ABS or polycarbonate has a rigid exterior and can be useful when your belongings need extra structure. A soft-shell suitcase made from polyester is often more flexible and commonly has a front pocket for documents or a laptop. However, the material may be more susceptible to dirt and moisture.

Also look out for:

  • 2 wheels: suitable if you’ll mostly pull the suitcase behind you;
  • 4 wheels or 360-degree wheels: useful for moving sideways around stations and airports;
  • TSA lock: according to the product description, an authorised security service can open a TSA lock with a special key. The lock won’t prevent someone who knows the combination from opening the suitcase;
  • telescopic handle: check its maximum height and whether it locks securely into place;
  • zip or aluminium frame: a zip is lightweight and flexible, while a frame construction may have a different type of closure and add weight.

Frequently asked questions about cabin suitcases

What size cabin suitcase can you take on a plane?

It depends on the airline, route and ticket you’ve chosen. Check the height, width and depth, including the wheels and handle, on the airline’s website. Also check whether it’s free under-seat baggage or additional hand luggage.

Is a 20-inch suitcase suitable as hand luggage?

A 20-inch suitcase may be suitable, but “20 inch” isn’t a standard baggage size. A model measuring 57 x 38 x 24 cm may be treated differently from one measuring 55 x 36 x 20 cm. Always compare the full external dimensions with the current requirements.

How long does a cabin suitcase last?

Its lifespan depends on how it’s used, the surface it’s rolled over, how heavily it’s packed and how well it’s maintained. Avoid overpacking, don’t pull a two-wheeled model at an angle over rough ground for long periods, and check the zips, handle and wheels regularly. Clean hard surfaces with a soft, damp cloth and don’t use abrasive products.
