Buying snacks: how to make informed choices from sweet, savoury and international snacks

Buying snacks online may seem straightforward, but attractive packaging does not always tell the full story. A large bag may contain relatively few portions, a “light” appearance says nothing about the ingredients, and an international snack may list allergens in a language you do not immediately recognise.

This practical selection guide helps you compare sweet snacks, savoury snacks, Asian snacks, chocolate snacks, crisps and biscuits based on verifiable product information.

Common pitfalls when buying snacks

1. A large pack is not automatically better value

A generously sized bag or tube may seem ideal for a family or party, but always check the net weight and the number of portions. For example, Pringles Hot Mexican Chili & Lime contains 160 grams. The nutritional information is given per 100 grams, so you need to estimate how much you serve at each eating occasion.

For snacks to share, a pack containing several individual portions can sometimes be more practical. Nestlé Mini Smarties consists of 18 mini packs in a 259-gram bag. This makes sharing easier to manage than one large open bag.

2. Ingredient claims need checking

Terms such as “natural”, “light” or “free from artificial colourings” only have real meaning when you also check the ingredients list. For example, Gusto Sweet Corn Corn Puffs states that it has a sweetcorn flavour and a light texture. The ingredients include 60% maize semolina, palm oil, maltodextrin, dextrose and salt.

It is also sensible to look beyond the word “cereals” when choosing muesli bars. The Hero Coconut Muesli Bar contains oats, wheat, barley, coconut and milk chocolate. For each 25-gram bar, the packaging states 28 grams of sugar per 100 grams. This is not a judgement on the product, but it is useful information when making comparisons.

3. Allergens are sometimes underestimated

Always check the allergen information before buying, particularly with international snacks. Common declarations include milk, wheat, gluten, soya, nuts, peanuts, sesame and barley. The Hero bar also states that it may contain nuts and peanuts. Pringles Hot Mexican Chili & Lime contains milk and wheat and may contain soya.

If you have a food allergy or intolerance, the packaging should be your main reference. Recipes and packaging can change. So do not rely solely on information in a blog or product title; check the current label when your order arrives.

What should you check before ordering snacks online?

1. Weight, portion size and shelf life

Compare products based on the price per 100 grams, not just the pack price. Also check:

  • the total weight;
  • the number of pieces or individual portions;
  • the recommended portion size, if stated;
  • the best-before or minimum shelf-life date on the packaging;
  • storage instructions, such as keeping the product cool, dry and out of direct sunlight.

Individually wrapped products are useful snacks for travelling. The Hero Coconut Muesli Bar consists of 6 bars weighing 25 grams each. Glico Pocky Peach Flavor is a compact 55-gram pack, making it easy to carry in a bag or lunchbox.

2. Ingredients and allergens

Ingredients are listed in descending order by quantity. If sugar, syrup or oil appears near the top of the list, these ingredients make up a significant part of the product. Also look out for compound ingredients, such as seasoning mixes in crisps or coatings on chocolate snacks.

Names and translations can vary on international snacks. For example, Glico Pocky products contain wheat, milk and soya. The packaging of LOTTE Pepero also states that it contains gluten from wheat, milk and soya. If you are buying snacks for a group, it is sensible to keep the packaging visible.

3. Nutritional information without overinterpreting it

The nutrition table helps you make a fair comparison. Look at energy, fat, saturates, carbohydrates, sugars and salt per 100 grams. A small portion may appear manageable, while the values per 100 grams are higher. Conversely, a product in a larger pack may be convenient for sharing, but less suitable if you do not measure out portions.

A Nutri-Score, such as the E rating shown for Verkade Nizza Coconut, is one tool within the overall nutritional profile. It is not a complete assessment of taste, convenience or suitability for your household.

Frequently asked questions about buying snacks

What are convenient snacks for travelling?

Choose products that are individually wrapped, compact and able to withstand short periods of transport. Muesli bars, small biscuits, Pocky sticks and small sweet packs usually fit easily into a bag. Keep chocolate snacks away from sunlight and heat; the coating can soften or discolour.

How do I compare the cost of different snacks?

Check the price per 100 grams and include delivery costs. When comparing multipacks, also look at the number of portions. A larger pack may offer better value per gram, while smaller packs can create less waste if you do not eat snacks very often.

How long do snacks stay fresh after opening?

This varies from product to product. Close bags and tubes securely and store them according to the instructions on the packaging, usually in a cool, dry place. Crisps lose their crunch more quickly after opening, while chocolate can change texture in warm conditions. If in doubt, check the smell, appearance and shelf-life information.
