Buying lamps: how to choose lighting that suits your home and lifestyle

A lamp may look appealing online and still prove less practical than expected. When buying lamps, many consumers focus mainly on colour and shape. As a result, important details such as the fitting, brightness and protection rating are sometimes only checked after delivery.

Three common pitfalls are:

  • A lamp without a light source: with some models, you still need to buy the LED bulb or another light source separately.
  • The wrong fitting: a fitting designed for E14 will not work with a standard E27 bulb. Also check the maximum wattage.
  • Confusing indoor and outdoor use: a lamp with IP20 is intended for dry indoor spaces. For garden lighting or a balcony, you need a suitable IP rating.

“Dimmable” is not a standard feature either. A lamp may be dimmable with a suitable light source, via an integrated dimmer or not dimmable at all. So check the technical product information rather than relying solely on the image.

Which specifications should you check before buying?

1. Fitting, light source and wattage

The most common choices in this selection are a lamp with an E27 fitting and a lamp with an E14 fitting. E27 is the larger fitting and is often used in floor lamps, table lamps and pendant lights. E14 is smaller and is commonly found in compact ceiling lights and wall lights.

Always check:

  • Is the light source included?
  • What type of fitting does the lamp have?
  • What is the maximum wattage?
  • Is the light source replaceable?
  • Is the lamp dimmable?

For example, according to the product information, the Atmosphera Myah ceiling light has three E14 fittings and a maximum power of 25 watts per light point. The light sources are not included. The Atmosphera Nyl pendant light uses one E27 fitting and has a maximum load of 40 watts.

With an integrated LED lamp, the light source is often part of the fitting. This can create a sleek design, but check whether the LED module is replaceable. The Brilliant Led Arc Lamp is listed as having an integrated LED module that cannot be replaced.

2. Colour temperature, brightness and dimmability

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin:

  • 2700–3000 K: warm white, suitable for ambient and bedroom lighting.
  • 4000 K: more neutral light for a workspace, kitchen or hallway.
  • 6000 K and above: cooler light for functional use.

Lumens indicate how much light the lamp produces. A low lumen output may be sufficient for accent lighting, while a living room will often need several light points.

According to the stated product specifications, the VIVREAL LED floor lamp has three colour temperatures: 3000 K, 4000 K and 6000 K. The remote control supplied has a range of up to 10 metres, according to the product description. This makes the lamp practical when you want to adjust the atmosphere in the room from your chair.

Another option is the Brilliant Led Arc Lamp. According to the product specifications, this floor lamp has 1300 lumens, an adjustable colour temperature from 3000 to 6500 K and a touch dimmer. With any dimmable lamp, check that the controls suit your situation: a wall dimmer, foot switch, remote control and touch control do not work in the same way.

3. Dimensions, stability and IP rating

Measure the space before ordering a floor lamp, ceiling light or pendant light. With a pendant light, pay particular attention to the total cable length and the distance from a table or walkway. For a floor lamp, the height, base width and cable position are important for stability and safety.

For damp areas and outdoor use, check the IP rating:

  • IP20: for dry indoor spaces only.
  • IP44: protected against solid particles from 1 mm and splashing water; suitable for certain sheltered outdoor locations.
  • A higher level of protection may be needed where the lamp is directly exposed to rain or jets of water.

According to the product information, the Philips Fira outdoor wall light has an IP44 rating, an integrated 4.3-watt LED and a colour temperature of 2700 K. Philips also states a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours; this is the brand’s stated figure and is not a guarantee for every usage situation. The lamp is intended for locations such as a garden, façade or balcony.

Frequently asked questions about buying lamps

Which lamp is best for a living room?

Combine general lighting, accent lighting and focused light. A ceiling light provides the basic illumination, while a floor lamp or table lamp can brighten a reading corner. Choose warm white light of around 2700 to 3000 K if you want a relaxing atmosphere. In a large room, also check the lumen output and number of light points.

Is a dimmable lamp more economical to run?

Not necessarily. Energy consumption depends on the wattage, how long the lamp is used and the light source selected. Dimmability mainly gives you greater control over brightness. An LED lamp generally uses fewer watts than a comparable traditional light source, but always compare the official product specifications.

Can I use an indoor lamp outdoors?

No, unless the manufacturer states that the lamp is suitable for outdoor use and the IP rating is appropriate for the location. A fitting with IP20 is not suitable for rain or damp conditions. For garden lighting, a balcony or a façade, choose a model with an appropriate protection rating, such as some IP44 outdoor wall lights.
