Buying coffee: how to choose the right coffee for your taste and lifestyle

Buying coffee online may seem straightforward, but products can vary considerably in flavour, preparation, quantity and price. A large pack is not automatically better value if you only drink coffee occasionally. Terms such as Arabica, Robusta, dark roast and “rich aromas” do not always tell you enough about what will ultimately end up in your cup.

This practical buying guide helps you compare instant coffee, ground coffee, filter coffee, coffee capsules, 3-in-1 coffee and ready-to-drink coffee based on the factors that really matter in a UK household.

Three common pitfalls when buying coffee

1. You only look at the brand or an appealing description

A brand name and words such as “intense”, “smooth” or “café-style” are not fixed flavour standards. Instead, look for verifiable information such as:

  • the coffee type: instant, ground, capsule or ready-to-drink;
  • the type of bean: Arabica, Robusta or a blend;
  • the recommended preparation method;
  • the number of servings and quantity per pack;
  • ingredients and nutritional values for mixed coffee drinks.

According to brands’ own product information, a particular bean may produce a mild, strong or aromatic flavour. That is a brand description, not a universal guarantee. Your brewing method, water temperature and personal preference remain decisive.

2. You buy ground coffee without checking the brewing method

Ground coffee intended for a filter machine will not automatically work well in an espresso machine or French press. The grind and dosage determine how quickly water passes through the coffee. Check whether the packaging states that the coffee is suitable for filter coffee, French press, AeroPress, percolator, Chemex or espresso.

If you use a filter machine, around 7 grams of coffee per cup is a practical starting point. Adjust the quantity to taste afterwards. The wrong grind can make coffee taste watery, bitter or overly strong.

3. You do not compare servings fairly

A 500-gram bag may appear good value, but a box of individual sticks can be more convenient for the office or when you are on the go. Compare the price per 100 grams, per capsule or per prepared cup. With 3-in-1 coffee, you are also paying for the coffee, sugar and creamer together. Always check the ingredients list and sugar content.

Important points to check

Coffee type: Arabica, Robusta or a blend

Arabica coffee is often described as aromatic and milder. Robusta coffee generally has a stronger profile and, according to product information, often contains more caffeine than Arabica. A blend combines the qualities of both.

However, the bean alone does not determine the complete flavour. Roast level, grind and preparation also play a part. Turkish coffee, for example, is prepared using a very fine grind, whereas filter coffee requires a different grind.

Preparation method and compatibility

First, decide how you drink your coffee:

  • Instant coffee: ready quickly with hot water, without a machine.
  • Ground coffee: suitable for filter machines, French presses or other brewing methods, depending on the grind.
  • Coffee capsules: convenient, but check that they fit your machine, such as a Nespresso Original or L’OR machine.
  • 3-in-1 coffee: coffee, sugar and creamer in one serving.
  • Ready-to-drink coffee: ready to enjoy straight away and often best served chilled.
  • Vietnamese coffee: often full-bodied and well suited to sweet iced coffee.
  • Turkish coffee: very finely ground and traditionally prepared with coffee grounds left in the cup.

Ingredients, allergens and storage

Pure ground coffee generally contains only roasted coffee beans. 3-in-1 varieties, iced coffee and cappuccino drinks may contain added sugar, milk ingredients, creamer and stabilisers. Check the label if you have a milk, soya or fish allergy.

Store coffee in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Seal opened packaging securely. Do not use a product if the packaging is damaged, and check the use-by or best-before information on the packaging.

Frequently asked questions about ordering coffee online

Which coffee is convenient without a coffee machine?

Instant coffee and 3-in-1 coffee are the simplest options. You only need hot water. With 3-in-1 coffee, do check the sugar and milk content. Ready-to-drink coffee is even quicker, but usually needs to be refrigerated after opening.

How long does coffee stay fresh after opening?

The exact shelf life is stated on the packaging. In practice, coffee beans and ground coffee gradually lose their aroma after opening due to air, heat and moisture. Seal the packaging securely and store it in a dry place away from direct sunlight. Individual coffee capsules and sticks generally remain protected for longer until they are ready to use.

Which is cheaper: coffee capsules or ground coffee?

That depends on the price per serving, the dosage and how you use it. Ground coffee can be cost-effective when you make several cups at once. Capsules offer convenience and a fixed quantity per cup, but compare the price per capsule with the contents of a bag of ground coffee. When ordering coffee online, also take delivery costs and pack size into account.
