Buying coffee online: how to choose the right type, flavour and pack size

Buying coffee online gives you more choice than the supermarket shelf: from instant coffee and filter coffee to Turkish coffee, Vietnamese coffee, coffee pods and ready-to-drink iced coffee. That wide choice makes comparing products easier, but it can also lead to a disappointing purchase. An attractive pack, for example, tells you little about the amount of coffee, sugar content or how the product should be prepared.

Use these practical checks to compare coffee based on information you can verify on the product page and packaging.

Common pitfalls when buying coffee

1. Confusing a familiar flavour with the right brewing method

Ground coffee is not automatically suitable for every coffee machine. Filter coffee requires a grind that allows water to pass through slowly. Turkish coffee, on the other hand, is ground extremely finely and is traditionally prepared directly with water. Choose the wrong grind and you can quickly end up with a weak, bitter or cloudy cup.

Always check whether the coffee is suitable for:

  • a filter coffee machine;
  • a French press;
  • a percolator or AeroPress;
  • an espresso machine;
  • traditional preparation, such as Turkish coffee.

2. Choosing a large pack without considering how much you drink

A 500 g pack of coffee may seem appealing for a household or office, but coffee gradually loses its aroma once opened. If you only drink a few cups a week, 200 g of coffee may be more practical. Also calculate the price per 100 grams or per cup. A multipack is not automatically better value if some of it remains unused.

3. Overlooking “creamy” or “3-in-1”

With 3-in-1 coffee, the coffee, whitener and sugar have already been added. This is convenient when you are out and about, but the ingredients differ from those of black coffee. According to the product information, Nescafé 3-in-1 Smooth & Rich contains, among other ingredients, sugar, glucose syrup, whitener and milk proteins. If you want sugar-free coffee or coffee with milk to your own taste, pure instant coffee or ground coffee gives you more control.

Also check for allergens in coffee blends. Products containing whitener may contain milk ingredients. Always check the label, especially if you have a milk or soya allergy.

What to look for when buying coffee online

1. Coffee type and ingredients

The ingredients list gives a more reliable picture than flavour descriptions on the front of the pack. With pure coffee, for example, the list should mention coffee only. The 200 g Nescafé Gold Instant Coffee lists instant coffee as its ingredient and, according to the product description, uses carefully selected, lightly roasted Arabica coffee beans.

With a blend, the ratio of Arabica to Robusta is relevant to the flavour, but the exact experience is still a personal matter. So look for verifiable information such as:

  • Arabica, Robusta or a combination of the two;
  • light, medium or dark roast;
  • flavour intensity, if the brand provides a scale;
  • added sugar, milk powder, whitener or flavourings;
  • allergens and nutritional values.

Brands may include additional sustainability or quality claims. Treat these as information provided by the brand and check the relevant certification or explanation on the packaging. A claim about flavour or effects is not an established fact without supporting evidence.

2. Preparation and convenience

Instant coffee dissolves in hot water and is suitable for the office, student accommodation or coffee on the go. Filter coffee requires a machine, filter and ground coffee, but is useful when you are making several cups at once. Coffee pods are practical if you use a compatible pod system. So make sure the pods fit your machine.

For Vietnamese coffee, you can choose ground coffee, such as Trung Nguyen Creative, or a 3-in-1 version. The G7 sachets combine coffee, whitener and sugar. This makes them simple to prepare: mix one sachet with hot water. For iced coffee, ready-to-drink cans or bottles are convenient, but check the serving size, sugar content and caffeine.

3. Serving size, shelf life and storage

An opened bag of ground coffee keeps its flavour for longer if you store it in an airtight container, in a dry place and away from direct sunlight. Instant coffee should also be sealed properly to prevent moisture and clumping. With ready-to-drink iced coffee, check whether it needs to be refrigerated after opening and how quickly you should drink it.

When ordering online, check:

  • net weight or number of sachets;
  • recommended serving;
  • best-before information on the packaging;
  • storage instructions;
  • whether the packaging is damaged on arrival.

Frequently asked questions about buying coffee online

Which coffee is convenient for drinking on the go?

Instant sticks, such as 3-in-1 coffee, are practical because you only need hot water. For a ready-to-drink option, you can take iced coffee in a can or bottle with you. With 3-in-1 varieties, do check the amount of sugar and milk ingredients. Ready-to-drink coffee may need to be refrigerated after opening.

Is 200 g or 500 g of coffee better value?

That depends on how much you drink and the price per 100 grams. A 500 g pack can make sense for a household that prepares filter coffee every day. If you drink little coffee or want to try different flavours, 200 g reduces the risk of losing aroma after opening. Compare both the unit price and the shelf life.

Which coffee should you choose if you like coffee with milk?

Pure filter coffee or instant coffee lets you add milk yourself. For convenience, ready-made options such as cappuccino, caramel macchiato or 3-in-1 coffee are suitable, but they often already contain sugar, whitener or milk powder. So read the ingredients list before ordering.
