Buying coffee: how to choose the right coffee for your taste and use

Buying coffee might seem straightforward, but the range varies widely in flavour, preparation, packaging and composition. Are you looking for ground coffee for a filter machine, instant coffee for the office, coffee pods for a Senseo machine, or an international speciality? With a few targeted checks, you can avoid paying for a product that doesn't suit your daily routine.

Common pitfalls when buying coffee

1. A nice flavour description doesn't tell you everything

Words like "rich", "smooth" or "intense" aren't always directly comparable. Instead, look for verifiable information such as:

  • the type of coffee bean: Arabica, Robusta or a blend;
  • the roast: light, medium or dark;
  • the grind size;
  • the recommended brewing method;
  • the amount of sugar, milk powder or flavourings in blended drinks.

A dark roast can taste stronger, but that doesn't automatically mean the coffee contains more caffeine. The bean type, serving size and brewing method also play a part.

2. The packaging doesn't match your machine

Ground coffee isn't universal. Fine grind is often used for espresso or Turkish coffee, whereas filter coffee needs a different flow rate. Coffee pods are specifically designed for pod machines. So check before you buy whether the product is suitable for your machine.

A common mistake is confusing coffee pods with capsules. Pods are flat coffee sachets, whereas capsules require a specific system and size.

3. A low price per pack can be misleading

Don't just compare the price of a bag or box. Also work out the price per cup, sachet or millilitre. A 500g pack of ground coffee can be more economical for a household, whereas individual sachets are more convenient for the office or on the go.

With 3-in-1 coffee, pay extra attention to the ingredients list. With NESCAFÉ 3-in-1, a significant part of the product is sugar, and the composition also contains creamer and milk proteins. If you're looking for black coffee without added sugar, you're better off looking at pure instant coffee or ground coffee.

Which specifications should you check?

Bean and flavour profile

Arabica coffee is often chosen for a milder, more aromatic flavour. Robusta generally has a stronger profile and is frequently used in espresso blends or strong Vietnamese coffee. These are general characteristics; the final taste also depends on the roast, grind and preparation.

According to the product description, Lavazza Qualità Rossa contains Arabica and Robusta beans and is medium roasted. Douwe Egberts Aroma Rood Donker also uses a combination of both bean types and is described as strong and spicy.

Brewing method

Choose the product based on the equipment you use:

  • Filter machine: ground coffee with a suitable, usually medium, grind.
  • Moka pot or espresso machine: finer grind; check the instructions on the packaging.
  • Turkish coffee: very finely ground coffee, often prepared in a cezve or ibrik.
  • Instant coffee: dissolves directly in hot water, no coffee filter needed.
  • Coffee pods: only use in a suitable pod machine.
  • Iced coffee: choose a ready-to-drink beverage or a concentrate that can be mixed with milk, water and ice.

Ingredients, allergens and caffeine

Pure ground coffee usually contains only coffee beans. With cappuccino coffee, 3-in-1 products and ready-to-drink iced coffee, sugar, milk powder, flavourings and stabilisers may have been added. So always check the label, especially if you have a milk allergy or want to limit your sugar intake.

Some products state a high caffeine content. OD Gourmet Ice Coffee Cappuccino, for example, states 52 mg of caffeine per 100 ml. The product information advises against this product for children, pregnant women, breastfeeding women or people who are sensitive to caffeine. Always follow the information on the packaging.

Practical tips for storing and preparing

Store coffee in a cool, dry and dark place, away from heat and moisture. Seal an opened pack tightly. Don't buy a product with damaged packaging and check the best-before information on the label.

For filter coffee, use about 7 grams per cup as a starting point and adjust the amount to your taste. For instant coffee, first add the recommended amount of water. With a 3-in-1 sachet, the serving size is usually fixed; with Trung Nguyen G7, that's one 16g sachet per serving.

If you want to buy coffee online, it's a good idea to compare several pack sizes. Also check the delivery time, storage advice, allergens and how the product should be prepared.

Frequently asked questions about buying coffee

Which coffee is suitable without a coffee machine?

Instant coffee and 3-in-1 instant coffee are the simplest. You only need hot water. A ready-to-drink iced coffee, such as one of the OD Gourmet varieties, can be drunk chilled straight away. With blended drinks, watch out for sugar, milk and caffeine.

How long does ground coffee keep after opening?

That depends on the packaging and the manufacturer's storage advice. Seal ground coffee tightly and store it dry, cool and out of direct sunlight. Always check the packaging for the exact best-before date and period after opening.

How much does coffee cost per cup?

The cost depends on the packaging, serving size and brewing method. Divide the purchase price by the number of sachets, pods or estimated cups from a pack. A large bag of ground coffee can be economical for daily use, whereas individual sachets mainly offer convenience.
