Buying coffee: how to choose the right type without paying more than you need to

Buying coffee online may seem straightforward, but the wide range of options can make comparing products difficult. Are you looking for ground coffee for a filter machine, coffee beans for a fully automatic machine, coffee capsules for a quick espresso or instant coffee for the office? The packaging often tells you a lot, but not always what you need for your preferred brewing method.

Pay particular attention to these three common pitfalls:

  • A flavour name does not tell you everything. Terms such as “intense”, “dark roast” or “espresso” do not always describe the same characteristics. Check the blend, grind size and recommended brewing method too.
  • A large pack is not automatically better value. Coffee gradually loses its aroma after opening. If you do not drink much coffee, individual portions or a smaller pack may be more practical.
  • Coffee products with milk, sugar or flavourings are not the same as ordinary black coffee. In cappuccino, flavoured coffee and some coffee capsules, ingredients such as sugar, milk powder or creamer may make up a significant proportion of the product.

Which type of coffee is right for your machine?

Choosing the right coffee starts with your machine and your usual routine.

  • Ground coffee: suitable for a filter machine, cafetière, percolator or some espresso machines. The grind size should match the brewing method.
  • Coffee beans: intended for a bean-to-cup machine or separate coffee grinder. You grind the beans just before brewing, but you do need additional equipment.
  • Coffee capsules: convenient for a consistent portion and quick espresso. Always check that the capsule is compatible with your system, such as Nespresso Original or another capsule system.
  • Coffee pods: intended for pod machines, such as Senseo. Pods are not the same as capsules and are not always interchangeable.
  • Instant coffee and cappuccino mixes: practical for home, travel or the office. As well as the coffee flavour, check the sugar, milk ingredients and recommended serving size.
  • Drip bags: a halfway option between filter coffee and convenience. Hang the filter bag over your cup and pour hot water over it.

If you want to make espresso, you will generally need a finer grind than someone brewing filter coffee. Turkish coffee, by contrast, uses extremely finely ground coffee, often prepared in a cezve or ibrik. A product labelled as espresso is therefore not automatically suitable for every machine.

Three specifications to check before buying

1. Composition: Arabica, Robusta or a blend

Arabica coffee is often chosen for its milder, aromatic flavour. Robusta coffee can offer a more powerful profile and more crema. Many strong coffee products combine both varieties. That is why you should check the ingredients list rather than relying solely on the front of the packaging.

For example, Kurukahveci Turk Kahvesi lists 100% Arabica coffee as an ingredient. According to the product information, Lavazza Qualità Rossa consists of ground coffee made from Arabica and Robusta beans. These are verifiable differences that tell you more than a general description such as “rich” or “premium”.

2. Brewing method and compatibility

Check the following before completing your purchase:

  1. Is the product ground, in pods, capsules or instant form?
  2. Is it compatible with your machine?
  3. Is the grind suitable for espresso, filter or Turkish coffee?
  4. How many cups can you make from the pack?

According to the product description, Lavazza Espresso Maestro Ristretto capsules are suitable for Nespresso machines. SENSEO Extra Strong is intended for Senseo coffee pod machines. Choosing the wrong system can quickly leave you with a product that sits unused in the kitchen cupboard.

3. Packaging, portions and ingredients

A resealable bag or protective packaging helps you store the product conveniently after opening. Individually wrapped portions are useful for travel, meeting rooms and households that do not drink coffee every day.

Also pay attention to allergens. The product information for many black coffees lists none of the 14 major EU allergens, while cappuccino mixes may contain milk ingredients, for example. g’woon Cappuccino lists skimmed milk powder, glucose syrup and coconut oil among its ingredients. Milk is listed for Trung Nguyen Legend Cappuccino Hazelnut. Always check the label on the packaging, particularly as product formulations may change.

Frequently asked questions about buying coffee

Which coffee is suitable for a strong flavour?

Look at the roast level, blend and intensity rating. According to the product description, a dark roast and a blend containing Robusta can create a more powerful flavour profile. The coffee-to-water ratio also affects the result. “Strong coffee” does not automatically mean more caffeine or a better choice, so compare the specifications with your preferences.

How long does coffee stay fresh after opening?

This varies depending on the product and packaging. Store coffee according to the label in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Seal the bag, jar or tin securely and check the best-before information on the packaging. Do not buy a large quantity simply because it costs less if you will not use it within a reasonable period.

Is ordering coffee online cheaper than buying it in a shop?

Online, you can easily compare pack size, price per serving, flavour profile and brewing method. The final cost depends on delivery charges, offers, packaging and how much you use. Compare the price per 100 grams, per capsule, per pod or per cup. This helps you avoid a low purchase price ending up costing more because of small portions or a product that is not compatible with your machine.
