Choosing a body trimmer: how to avoid a disappointing purchase

A body trimmer may seem straightforward at first glance: charge it, choose a comb attachment and start trimming. In practice, models vary considerably in water resistance, trimming lengths, skin protection and accessories. A cheap purchase can therefore prove inconvenient if the battery runs out quickly, the device cannot be used in the shower or the included combs do not suit your preferences.

That is why you should not choose a body groomer, body trimmer or electric body trimmer based on brand or price alone. Pay particular attention to the following potential pitfalls.

Three common pitfalls when choosing a body trimmer

1. Waterproof does not automatically mean safe to use while charging

The term waterproof or the rating IPX6/IPX7 indicates resistance to water under specific conditions. It does not mean that you can use the device in the shower while it is connected to the charger. With virtually all models, the charging port must remain dry. Also check whether “waterproof”, according to the product description, applies to the entire device or only to the washable head.

2. Lots of attachments do not necessarily mean lots of useful lengths

A trimmer with several heads sounds versatile, but look at the actual settings. Some models have just one fixed body comb of 3 mm. Others offer a range of, for example, 1 to 9 mm or 0.4 to 10 cm. For a beard and body trimmer, separate combs are also useful, as facial hair and body hair do not always require the same trimming length.

3. Skin protection is no guarantee against irritation

Brands use terms such as SkinGuard, Safetyshield or dual protection. According to information provided by the brands concerned, these designs are intended to limit direct contact between the skin and cutting components. This is a product specification, not a guarantee of irritation-free grooming. Do not use a trimmer for sensitive skin on damaged, irritated or sunburnt skin, and apply only light pressure.

Important specifications to compare

Water resistance and wet and dry use

If you want to use a waterproof body trimmer in the shower, look for a clear IP rating or an explicit statement that it is suitable for wet and dry use. IPX6 generally indicates protection against powerful jets of water; IPX7 refers to temporary immersion under specified conditions. The manufacturer's precise usage instructions should always take priority.

A model described as merely “washable” may not be suitable for use under running water while trimming. Also check the charging warning. A body trimmer for wet and dry use should be thoroughly dried after cleaning before you connect it to a charger.

Trimming lengths and comb attachments

For an even result, adjustable combs are more practical than a single fixed comb. Pay attention to:

  • Minimum trimming length: important for short stubble or precise touch-ups.
  • Maximum trimming length: relevant for chest hair, legs or a longer beard.
  • Step size: settings in 1 mm increments give you more control than a few fixed lengths.
  • Protective comb for sensitive areas: reduces direct contact with the blade, but does not replace a careful technique.

For example, an intimate trimmer with a range of 3 to 12 mm is designed for trimming, not for every type of smooth shave you may want. So check whether the product is intended for external use and which areas the manufacturer excludes.

Battery, charging and maintenance

A cordless trimmer is useful at home, on holiday or while travelling. Compare the operating time with the charging time. A model with 45 minutes of operating time may be enough for a quick weekly trim, while 90 to 120 minutes gives you more flexibility when grooming several body areas.

Also check:

  • whether a USB, USB-C or dedicated charger is included;
  • whether the device can be used while charging;
  • whether the blades are washable or removable;
  • whether oil, a cleaning brush, protective cap or travel case is included;
  • which warranty and legal conformity information is stated on the product page.

A longer battery life does not automatically make a device more suitable. For occasional use, a compact model with simple controls may be more practical than an extensive 7-in-1 set.

Frequently asked questions about body trimmers

Can I use a body trimmer for intimate areas?

Only if the product description explicitly says so. Use an intimate trimmer exclusively on external skin and follow the instructions for the combs and direction of movement. Avoid cuts, irritated skin and mucous membranes. A protective comb can limit contact with the blade, but working carefully remains important.

How long does the battery of a cordless trimmer last?

This varies by model. Across the range, stated operating times vary from approximately 45 to 120 minutes. The actual duration depends on hair thickness, attachment and frequency of use. Do not leave a lithium-ion battery completely flat for long periods, and use only the supplied or specified charger.

How much does it cost to use an electric body trimmer?

After purchase, ongoing costs generally consist of electricity, replacement blades where necessary and maintenance products. A USB-rechargeable trimmer uses very little electricity per charge. If you plan to use the device for a long time, pay particular attention to the price and availability of replacement blades. Also bear in mind the statutory minimum two-year guarantee for consumer products in the EU, in addition to any further rights under the applicable Dutch regulations.
